This is a fitting end to Iceman's story. He can barely speak, but he makes every word count. He knows he is dying, and he has no fear. He is just focused on doing what's right and having one more good laugh with his friend.

@@Ironheart73 your right they were once rivals and Iceman thought Maverick was reckless and that thought too much of himself. iceman said in original to Maverick you’re dangerous and foolish, worse then the enemy. It’s good to see them in sequel have a close friendship like brothers and respect each other. They know they are the last among the breed of their generation as Naval Aviators is concerned.

It's a trick question. They are both "The better pilot". They are just different KINDS of pilots. Maverick is a hot-head non-conformist exceptionally good aggressive pilot. Just what you NEED in an impossible situation. Ice-man is cold perfection, unflappable, precise and reliable. Just what you NEED in the normal to very difficult situations. You can't afford too many Mavericks, they are dangerous and always breaking things like your multi-billion dollar prototypes. BUT, they are inspirational and you can't make progress without them. Ice-men are the backbone of the service, reliable, affordable and get the job done 98% of the time. IMO :)

I absolutely agree. Same way you consider how some generals in history tended to be used by a country during a time of war. Just as a example: You had General Patton & Omar Bradley who never ever liked each other in WWII, BUT both realized that they owed much of their respective success to the other. Historian Blumenson characterized their relationship as “World War II's Odd Couple.” He was undoubtedly correct, for neither commander liked the other, but grew to respect their abilities. During the Sicily campign, Bradley became Eisenhower’s most valued subordinate. From Normandy to the German border, Eisenhower had nothing but praise for Bradley and Patton. However, Bradley was Ike's preferred choice to keep cohesion on the front lines. Bradley, ever cautious but utterly dependable in Ike’s opinion, directed the American portion of Ike’s broad front advance to the German frontier. Bradley considered Patton profane, vulgar, too independent, and not a team player. For his part, Patton thought Bradley was overly cautious, indecisive at critical moments, and lacking the resolve to follow through when the operational opportunity presented itself. The German counteroffensive in the Ardennes on December 16 produced Bradley’s worst moment and Patton’s most brilliant campaign during a critical crisis. The Battle of the Bugle was almost a impossible situation given how weather/road conditions were terrible, and the need to aid the 101st Airborne before the Germans took the town were paramount to Eisenhower. Both men's strategies had their pros & cons, but the Germans even after D-Day still considered Patton the Allies best general & a much deeper threat than Bradley given his bold & aggressive skillset (similar to Erwin Rommel & maybe how the Navy views Maverick). Ike just needed to pick the right moments to ulitize Patton's skills on the battlefield while maintaining Bradley's balanced & reliable approach. A trait that was still 97% the backbone of most Allied generals during that time (particularity the British). It's a shame that both men didn't have enough time to find a way to mend their rivalry after Patton's car accident in late 1945. At least we all can appreciate that both Ice & Mav found the time to acknowledge their relationship/friendly rivalry before Ice's passing.

This scene was heartbreaking for so many reasons. Val Kilmer's real life struggle with cancer gave it so much authenticity. Maverick having to see his friend and one time rival reduced to typing words on a computer screen when he was once so full of life, cockiness, and energy, while also sensing his own impending obsolescence was poignant. And of course, it's heartbreaking for long time fans to once again be reminded of how distant the halcyon days of the golden 1980s have become, when our country and our lives seemed to be in a much better place and there was so much hope and optimism for the future.

This scene felt very real, very authentic. Watch any documentary where they get older warriors together telling their stories and the seriousness, the joy, the bond of brotherhood is there. Yes they were rivals - they’re fighter pilots, one of the most A-type in control I’m-the-best jobs in the world- especially when you’re a young 20-something hotshot ready to take on the world. And then they go through something together that changes both. And 30+ years later they can be serious men dealing with their fates one minute and grinning rivals joking about who’s the best pilot. Watch anything with WWII carrier pilots & thats what you see.

I love where he says the Navy needs Maverick. All the way back to the first film, Maverick never fit the Navy's mould of what they want a pilot to be. But Maverick is better than the Navy's mould and that's what many organizations don't understand, someone that doesn't fit is actually better and can teach better ways of doing things. That's why I hate standards for anything. But only people like Ice recognize that and are willing to go against the grain, which is why the Navy needs Maverick.

The answer is both of them. The last one fighting for the other one. Iceman fought for maverick, he had something left to teach others, the next generation. Maverick fought for the rookies, because they have to believe they could succeed in order to succeed. Who in their right mind would fly under the noses of waves of surface to air missiles and hit a target many think would be impossible to even risk a stealth bomber or stealth fighter both of which is a costlier option if lost pilot and tech could fall into enemy hands.

He's the last movie star...able to bring out these moments and to make such dedications resonate with emotion but also be classy enough not to feel cheap or manipualtive or performative. He's the last person in Hollywood who has the presence to make a sequel better than the original. He's the last actor in Hollywood who can still get millions of fans to see his work by his name alone, needing nothing else except maybe the title of the film. Val Kilmer is great, too, and it's nice to see Cruise the movie star pay tribute to Kilmer even as Cruise the EP pays tribute to Iceman an Cruise the actor has Maverick pay tribute to his one-time rival, long-time friend, and protector Iceman. A great, layered, and beautiful scene that I think only Cruise could pull off these days without having his sincerity at any level questioned.

You know some studio nitwits probably didn’t want Val in the film because of his medical issues or the old “he’s difficult to work with” excuse. Val made it known he wanted to return as Iceman and I was really happy to hear that Tom wouldn’t do the film without him. Tom is one of the few actors left in Hollywood who can dictate how things are going to be to a major studio. Let’s also not forget that Paramount wanted to release this film to streaming 1-2 years ago. I’m glad Tom’s vision of how the audience should see this film won out.

This scene really hits me hard because I am the same age as these guys and anybody that is around their age is like a rude awakening and reminder that we all get old and time flies! When we are in our 20s we think we are going live forever and most of us at that age act upon our impulses and everything is a competition. These two represent exactly what every military service needs - on the one hand, you have the guy who follows rules and procedures, who keeps situations stable and able to be handled, who understands the importance of teamwork and cohesion, and who has the talent and demeanor to be an ideal team leader. And then you have the loner, the otherworldly talented guy who see rules as guidelines and not definites, the guy who sees beyond limits and boundaries and has the ability to do things that are incredible but as great as that is, it is INDIVIDUAL talent and doesn’t mesh with cohesiveness. That guy will get it done, but it’ll cost. Both are needed and both- in a perfect world-understand that both are necessary.

One of my favorite scenes in the movies my wife and I saw it in late May. We are both fans of the original and this scene is nostalgic watching Maverick (Cruise) and Iceman (Kilmer) together again.

Imagine being at each others throat and then the moment combat comes to them, they became brothers and stayed that way till the end. So much so that no one could understand Maverick better than Iceman. Ice knew that maverick needed to be maverick for his and Navy's sake, so he fought for him his entire career. He knew mavs shenanigans were too insignificant in front of the value he added to naval aviation. 'Its like it's always been, maverick screws up and iceman makes a call and it goes away'. The bonds forged in combat are stronger than any other bond known to man.

In average sequels stories are cheesy. Top Gun 2 is anything but cheesy. Especially this scene with Iceman. One of the best in the movie.

This is an oscar worthy scene for both men. A perfect example how letting the actors emotions carry the scene and not a bunch of wasted dialogue.

I think it's time for another month with paramount... I'll, yet again, spend it watching Maverick every other night. And Hunt for Red October the alternating nights :) Can't force myself to watch anything else from their offering :)

Met Val Kilmer briefly at a convention. He wasn't doing too well because of his cancer fight.

They got the tone of this scene absolutely perfect. We all know that Val Kilmer is very unwell and they didn't pull any punches with the dialogue. And of course, brilliantly acted by both Tom and Val.
