Mawashi uke (round/wheel block) appears in nearly every Goju Ryu kata, and often more than once in a single kata.
Ché goes over some applications, variations and associated footwork. Brian has an easier time than usual.

I like this Sensei. I am 70yrs old and have trained in martial arts since my mid-teens experiencing TKD to 3rd dan, Wing Chun for 15yrs, boxing for two and currently Wado Ryu.I learned something new from this. Just shows we never stop learning, relaxation and breathing brothers and sisters, relaxation and breathing!

Hi Yes Shitoryu and shotokan use this format, I like that it shows difference in striking potential and also smearing ideas that would allow for more destabilising especially if you out flanked the attacker. Milk for babes, strong meat for adults... and this one's a veritable carnivorous banquet! Tensho kata is mawashi uke 'unpacked' (and so, i'm increasingly convinced, is kururunfa; and consider the emphasis on mawashi uke in Suparinpei ). Kancho Oyama considered Tensho the most advanced kata, and his 'circle and point' theory emerged from his study of the relationship between Tensho and mawashi uke. I've gained more than a few bunkai insights over the past decades from using Tensho and mawashi uke as a 'rosetta stone' for decoding the other kaishu kata... especially when using kakie as the 'launch platform', and conceiving kata as 'shadow grappling/tuite' rather that mere 'shadow boxing/striking' (a major disadvantage of the ascendancy of sport karate and the consequent eisegetic misinterpretation of kata). The hard-won insights you so generously provide in this clip would have been considered 'inner-door' secrets (okuden) not too long ago. How fortunate the GRKC community. Kudos, sir!.

Osu. Kancho(later Sosai) Oyama, said exactly that. It is one of the highlights of the"point and circle" theory of Chinese martial arts seen in Okinawan/Japanese karate styles like Goju, Ueichi and Kyokushin.

I like the look of surprise or satisfaction on your face when you performed the formal end of Sepai on Brian's head, and then solo, afterwards. You said that it isn't spoken about but the movements are there [in the kata]. I had a similar feeling when I read the rules of kata,as passed on by Toguchi Sensei. The one that goes: Every movement in kata is significant and is to be used in application. So one of the old masters would be in agreement with you and your approach to studying kata movements. And I was nodding enthusiastically as you were performing the movements. I think I was seeing a connection that I hadn't seen before.

I love this video. I'll try to incorporate the kakie with a couple of our boys who have issues getting along. Kakie requires cooperation. It will also condition their 10 year old muscles (hopefully the one between their ears as well).

I really love this video. Very inspiring. It also shows me that you don't always need a teacher for every detail. Sometimes you just have to try and try yourself and learn. In every technique there is always much more than meets the eye.

Hi You need a teacher and a dojo for the best part of the beginning of the journey . I’d say white to black belt “ dojo offers 3 things . 1 corrections 2 training partner and 3. Equipment to train with From black belt you could start training without as much time with a sensei I am lucky to see senior sensei at least once a year, then it’s total focus Che

This was a great video. Something my sensei likes to hammer home is where the under-hand starts. He stresses that it shouldn't just be at the elbow, but also further up at the armpit, so that if you are very close range and grappling, you are covering for a potential ribs/armpit strike. I also find it changes the timing slightly and helped me encourage my elbows to come down at the end. Like you said at the start of the video, lots of different variations for the same movements! Its one of my favourite things in Goju Ryu.

Im beginning to think that there is more kung fu hidden in karate than there is in modern kung fu.

We have a few moves that are just very refined king fu I do think as a karate ka it’s on my to acknowledge that our source and roots are Chinese Arts, and not Japanese , as so many people believe I’m lucky to have had a fantastic Childhood training karate under more open minded Sensei / Sifu. Sadly much of our competition is because of success and the money . This was a place of animosity sadly

There's nothing basic about what you are teaching here sensei..I've been doing goju ryu for 35 years and your video instruction is awesome. I live in Port Alfred and I do Seiwakai. Mawashi Uke is the two main blocking circles in karate combined. In sparring you follow the arm back into his guard/ grabbing him on the downward motion you give the others arm while he retracs it. (The deciving retraction of the m.u. before reaching out in kata may come from push hand situations and makes it harder to realize it's fundamental meaning.) To stop after redirecting the attacking arm a little is quite stupid, but we black belts still do it. Start pulling back your punches in every kihon kumite and stick with your uke to it and you will see, that even the tettsui of heian shodan/pinan nidan is a fully executed age uke. Hikite is a way to get your arm out of his kakie from (not) normal circling randori uke or resisting his two on one pull after a catch.

I prefer to do mawashi uke like a hadoken, to develop concentration, and also to keep the elbows in. Mawashi uke is a modified version of tai chi silk reeling, and every aikido technique can be derived from it. I have a newfound sense of admiration for Okinawans after this discovery.

Ah, someone else who also knows Aikido! Yes, you can see how ikkyo and nikkyo share the roots. And it's important to remember the kung fu roots of Goju Ryu in White Crane and Monk Fist boxing, and to take the best of our past and carry it forward into the future 🙇🏻‍♀️

You mentioned the big kata like Seisan, Sepai, Kurunrunfa. what about Gekisai Dai Ni? Some of the arm movements reminded me of this one. In the past, I watched some footage of Teruo Chino using these movements.

Your right Daniel GekiSai Sai dai 2 is the start, most people believe they understand mawashi ukr because they did it early, but the reality is it’s one of our most import concepts and therefore appears many times over in our kata syllabus. It’s also a tangent point for : an alternative guard, half high and half low, as we. Or for clinching and pulling in two different zones ( again high and low ) to de stabilise your opponent I loved how Chinen Sensei demonstrated all his karate, his kata had flair and his Bunkai went beyond move block strike. I hope I keep some of his ideas and teaching alive Che

The way Brian bows is not the best way to bow. In fact in Japan it is seen as very impolite and disrespectful to maintain eyecontact while bowing as it sends out the message "I don't trust you, so I keep an eye on you." And despite not practising Goju Ryu myself (I am at home in Shorin Ryu), I can find some interesting insights as Mawashi Uke / Tora Guchi also appears in some Kata of Shorin Ryu (such as Kusanku, Jitte, Aragaki Sochin).

Your comment about the 'rei' (bowing) is not that simple, in martial arts "keeping eye contact" is understandable, maybe in 'regular Japanese society you would not keep eye contact. Another thing is 'hand position' , I trained in Kyokushin. The 'rei' is done with both 'fist clenched in front of yourself (not to sides on thighs) . This is to convey "I'm ready to fight" Osu.

@@duanemiller567 I see. But have you ever been to Japan? I was there 3 times. And my sensei and others told me that no matter if it is in the Dojo or outside of it: you always bow like you do in society. There are no differences between rei in the Dojo and rei outside of the Dojo.

@@ralfhtg1056 Yes Sir, I have been to Japan twice (1984, 87') and have trained @ Kyokushinkai Honbu dojo. It may be a 'organization/situation thing, in our system 'eye contact' is maintained, and for sure with a 'uke'.

Did you say the mushimi is the sticky Rice body? Don't you mean mochimi? And the opposite, muchimi, the rope/whipbody spells differently. Mushimi is a famous mushroom Sashimi.

Our Okinawan style draws its roots directly from White Crane and Monk Fist Kung Fu - it's nice to be able to show these roots from time to time :) We have a tall rubber dummy thing that is almost like the famous wooden dummy - we just need to find a way to stick arms on it!
