This is the Amazon link to this broadhead: www.amazon.com...
This is a test of the "MAXONE 6 Pack Mechanical Broadhead, 2 Blade Broadhead, Hunting Broadhead 100grain, 2" Cutting Archery Broadhead Reusable for Compound Bow Hunting"
Here is summary of my 2022 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/ the scores for this broadhead posted in parenthesis as well.
Total Maxone Score: 87.43 = 9 Golden Arrows
1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 19 pts)
This is not just a test of how heads fly out of my bow, as it was in the past. With a well tuned bow, properly built arrows & good form, almost every head flies well. That's why in the past most heads got a flight score of 9 or 10. But that doesn't help those who may not have perfectly tuned bows/arrows/good form. So now I am gauging Flight Forgiveness. This is based on how the head flies for me, how well it spins, how "sensitive" the flight is to imperfections, & the exposed surface area of the blades. The max score of a Mech is 10 (20 on 20 pt scale) & the max score of a Fixed is 8 (16 on 20 pt scale). Since this head has more exposed surface area of the blades than most mechs, it scored the same as a small fixed blade head--16 pts.
2. Cut Size (20%, 18.44 pts)
The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (2"+".22" x 7 = 6.22 pts)
The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (2.22"/2.5" x 7 = 6.22 pts)
The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (2"/2 x 6 = 6 pts)
3. Blades (20%, 18.75 pts)
Initial sharpness (9%, 200 grs=10/10=9 pts ) & Edge Retention (9%, +52 grs=9.5/10=8.55 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF and 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
Out of the Box Sharpness:
0-200 gr: 10
201-300 gr 9
301-400 gr: 8
401-500 gr: 7
501-600 gr: 6
601-700 gr: 5
Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (5/10=1.2 pts)
4. Penetration (20%, 15.06 pts)
There are 3 penetration tests:
Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 9% of the score. (7.5" = 7.5 pts)
Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 9% of the score.
(54 layers=6.94 pts)
Angled Penetration Test: How effectively does the head penetrate 1/4" MDF covered by carpet at a 45 degree angle. This accounts for 2% of the score. (2/2pts)
5. Durability (20%, 13.8 pts)
Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 after each shot & weighted to 12% of the score. (10 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (3.5 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (.3 pts)
Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
BONUS: Heads are rewarded bonus points for special, intangible features such as: rotation, no O rings/clips for mechs, extra thickness, hole size, other unique designs, etc.
+1 no O rings or collars
TOTAL Maxone SCORE: 87.43= 9 Golden Arrows
Price of Maxone: $4.65 per head (sold as 6 pack)
Grading Scale:
90-100 10 Golden Arrows
85-90 9
80-85 8
70-80 7
60-70 6

Awesome video sir 👍 some of those budget broadheads really seem to be stepping up their game, I was for sure it was going to brake in the steel plate but I was pleasantly surprised to see it make it to the demolition round, I always laugh a little when it cuts to you spinning a nub on the end of your arrow

Bought these after watching the review. They’re so cheap I felt like I was stealing them. 6 to a box. Were slightly sharp out of box and used Diamond sharpener and they sharpened up really nice. Have shot them a few times and seem flawless so far into foam. I’m loving them.

Right? It's really crazy how good they are. I just tested the Trypan and Hypodermic NC +P and both of those are MUCH MUCH weaker than these cheap models :)

Lusk, I think a really cool additional test that would be easily standardized and meaningful is the force it takes to push through a piece of leather. This would allow us to compare how much force it takes to open blades on mechanicals and compare the "cut-on-contact-ness" of the fixed. Thanks and I love the vids. Keep it up!
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks John. I have considered that, but a slow penetration force test like that has very little relevance and even gives a false impression of what happens at higher speed. Consider the difference between jumping into a pool of water from 3' of elevation...and jumping into a pool of water at 300' of elevation--completely different forces at work at higher speeds. The pressure it takes for a blade to open and penetrate at slow speed has little to do with how well it opens and penetrates at higher speed. When a super long, narrow head, like an Ashby 3:1 ratio head, is pushed thru leather, it only takes a couple lbs to penetrate. But some mechs can take as much as 40+ lbs to penetrate like that. However, at 280 fps, there is often little to no difference in penetration, depending on the heads. And the extra length of those heads does not impede penetration at slower speeds, but it does at higher speeds. Short heads take more force to penetrate at slower speeds but actually penetrate more deeply than the longer heads at high speeds.

@@LuskArcheryAdventures Great explanation! I would be really interested in the relation to the length of the head, size of the cut, & the weight of the whole arrow to arrow speeds. For instance, we know you shouldn’t be shooting these out of a recurve, but at what speed & weight does it make sense to go for that bigger cut? I’m thinking whitetail for what it’s worth, as well as having a shorter draw length and shoulder problems. In the end, I know a properly placed shot will net you good results with just about any broad head 7/8” cut or more, but deer don’t have dots painted on them like my targets do! I split three arrows last season in different bag targets, but I struggled with knowing exactly where to place that arrow on a deer from 30’ up at various angles. I need them inches in width, not just total cut.

If anybody’s looking for rear deployment of mechanical heads. This is it. Wow. For $27 for a 6 pack???? What??? Just in every way it blows your mind. The rage’s wishes they were these 😂. 99% of rear deploying heads wishes they were these.

Thanks for the comment. I've considered that, but there is an inherent flaw with it. What happens at slow speeds, like pressing the head thru a medium in order to measure the force it takes to open, have almost no bearing on what happens when the arrow is flying at 280 fps. It's similar to comparing what it feels like to jump in water from 2' high vs 200 ft high. One feels fine and the other will kill you. If a lot of force is being lost on the blades deployment, it will be shown in the penetration tests.
@keithwhite513
@keithwhite513 Жыл бұрын
One way to do it would be shoot through a medium in front of a chrono and then calc loss of momentum and ke. Results will change based on arrow set-up but would be a reasonable reference point.

The problem with products manufactured in China is they usually begin with using inferior materials to keep costs low. On top of that, most of the components are mass produced using unskilled labor. Then the components are assembled and put to market. Because of this, their products vary drastically when you compare apples to apples. Using broadheads as an example, out of a pack of 3 100g heads, one might be 94g, one 98g and the other 100g. Two of those heads might not score as well as the third, or might score even better. In my experience, China originated items are usually a gamble. I've had some winners for the price, but many more instances where I ended up spending more money in the long run because the item was trash and I ended up buying another from a supplier better known for quality. Keep up the excellent content, John.
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Chris. Could be true. But I've not experienced that varying quality, in my limited experience--at least from Maxone and Deepower. And the truth is, most of the heads on the market were made in China at the very same factories--and most of the components even of those assembled in the US.

Thanks for the comment Erin. Both the Killzone and this head are rear deploying without a collar or O rings, and have a 2" cut. But the Killzone is not all steel and it has a different blade deployment/retention system. This is more similar to a Rage NCS...but then the deployment/retention system is different as well.

Thanks watching & for the comment. What difference do you think that might show? I used to have an 80 yard flight test in my test regimen...but it proved to show no significant difference than what would happen at 30 to 40 yards. And since most shooting is done at that range, that's why I switched. Then there is the human error at super long ranges like that. If I had a Hooter Shooter, I'd do it, but my margin of error at 80 yds makes such testing less conclusive.
