@catchnkill
@catchnkill 2 жыл бұрын
@@SaltedCoffee400 It is about the bus width and proximity to the CPU cores. For M1 Pro chips the memory bus width to the on-die memory controller is 256bit wide and 512 bit wide for M1 Max. In the PC side, nobody make such a wide bus connection to the memory controller. Referring proximity to CPU cores, AMD has one Ryzen chip using vcache. Vcache is level 3 cache stacked on top of the CPU die using advance 3D packaging. It gives the Ryzen chip a 15% speed increase.

The battery longevity really is the crazy thing to me on the new macs. I edited and exported a small photo project in Lightroom last night which took me a little longer than a half hour to complete. Out of habit, I went to get the charger after it was done, but when I checked the battery life, the machine was still at 97% charge 😂. My old 13” Mac would have easily dropped 30-40% doing the same task. These new machines are insane.

Software dev here: One of the biggest misconceptions out there is that lower RAM utilization = better. This just isn't true, ideally you want your RAM to be saturated because RAM access is MUCH faster than reading from the drive (despite modern drives being super fast, they are still slow compared to RAM). The system should only deallocate RAM when necessary. Basically, a computer with as much loaded into RAM as possible (obviously done intelligently which modern OSs can do) will operate significantly faster than a computer that is constantly allocating/deallocating RAM and always reading from the disk, despite it showing less RAM usage.

I dont think that is true on this new silicone. I also believe the bus speeds is what is limiting transfer speeds - x86 is around 90/sec depending on motherboard - this silicone is either 200 or double on max. The unix software is also much faster on file transfers - microsoft use of dll files, ms dos base, doesnt compare to that… as little as its a hardware issue i dont see any benefit from threads being filled with more ram usage. It is also only a 8 core (+2) system. Intel have 16 treads on tgeir flagship cpu. Ofcourse ”ram” usage is lower - the thread count is much lower. Im not interested in how silicone works theoretically - but i think your theory dont work here.

One thing to keep in mind is that the storage speeds on the M1 Pro macs are between DDR2 & DDR3 (5-7 Gb/s ) depending on the storage config. Also since MacOS lacks jetsum filling the ram could result in slower performance since it does have to page with swap but as your comment alludes to its not a clear cut situation.

@zgoaty9235
@zgoaty9235 2 жыл бұрын
Future proofing is never a bad thing. It’s why I upgraded my 2018 11” iPad Pro to the 2021 11”. The 16 GB of RAM is going to make sure that I never run into issues with apps closing or slowing down because of having to access the storage. iOS 15 already makes 6 GB on the iPhone 12 and 13 Pros/Maxes almost a minimum because of how much it caches on the RAM. On iPadOS, it uses well above 4 GB of RAM and gets close to 6 so the 8 GB of RAM on the 128-512 storage options will get limited very quickly on further iOS/iPadOS iterations.

Not sure that is a fair comment. MS builds it unit based on AMD x86-64 (Intel) architecture for a Windows platform that is tried and true. It has been around forever. It is not power efficient. ARM is exciting/new and is a challenge for change. As far as mobile computing goes, I like what Apple ARM is doing and interested in seeing where it take computing in the years to come. Waiting for my M1 Pro MBP to come. My first new Mac since 2014 that is still working but showing it's age. I use various computer systems and pledge no allegiance to any. I am very interested to see how ARM can scale to a desktop. I would like to see how it can scale in data center processors. Waiting for software to catch on. I wouldn't have thought looking at the memory utilisation in those activity monitor screens is a good indicator of actual usage on either system, given OS and apps proactively grab pages of memory before they're required. Not sure what algorithm either OS uses, but contiguous pages are usually more efficient than just requesting what you need when you need it, and infrequently used pages are usually swapped out before you hit physical memory limits (which would explain the massive initial macOS swapfile) :) In another thought, how weird is it that the surface keyboard looks like the previous generation MacBooks? That screwed with my brain the first 5 mins of the video.

The functionality between ios/mac os is so much in focus now too. With monterey. Dont get me started on windows/android functions - its not there and never will be. I also would manually go into the registry after every uninstall and try to clean out all the left behind entries when I uninstalled software. It was ridiculous. Intel should stop offering chips for laptops and instead just make them for desktop computers, plus then create mini-split style computers where the chips are in a separate wall-mountable outdoor venting heat-sink cooling system. They could then promote them as heating units and it wouldn’t matter as much that they’re using quadruple the amount of energy. It could be a win-win for them, instead of trying to compete with Apple’s M series chips.
