Descendants was fun as it’s own thing, but I’ll never forgive the franchise for essentially halting ever after

I really like Evie’s storyline in the movies. It goes from her wanting to marry a rich man to “I am the rich man.”

Was anyone else uncomfortable with the fact that Ben didn't seeing being given a love potion as a bad thing? I'm pretty sure that's the fairy tale equivalent of a roofie. "She drugged me, but I ended up liking her so it's okay." That part always bothered me. EDIT: Okay so I'm not the only one who found this upsetting. Good to know.

Poor Audrey though, she got her boyfriend stolen from her :') Ben publicly embarrassed her, since the whole school knew when they were dating, and he didn't even think about it once after the spell is broken.

As a kid, Descendants was fun but you know what was better? Ever After High. It's the one show I can re-watch without being bored and that is the thing, a re-watchable show is a better than a three part movie that ages like bad milk. I'm still very satly that Descendants of all shows was the one that took such a good show away.

Carlos is the most interesting out of all of the descendants especially in the book. Honestly he should have been the main character. Also I love that Jafar doesn’t hurt or treat Jay like rubbish, he’s just a single dad who has to go against his values for him and his son to live I want more of Jay and his dad! I wish we’d gotten more scenes of Evie and his mum, and an actual personality for the girl would be nice.

I think the villain kid's names makes sense actually, to kind of show that they only view them as extensions of themselves. They're not their own people, but rather puppets for the villains to use. Because of course the kids are, they were given life by their parents. Idk maybe I'm overanalyzing and projecting, but yeah.

Can we at least talk about how if Mal had been a boy and Ben had been a girl that giving that love potion cookie would’ve been seen way differently and this movie wouldn’t have been made???? Like serious Mal basically did the same thing Voldemort‘s mom did to his dad the only difference is that it seems like Stockholm Syndrome had already kicked in for Ben so he didnt leave her like Voledemorts dad did lmao Not that but isn’t it confirmed later that he never “officially” broke up with his girlfriend from the start of the movie?? One he had aparently been dating for years??? I’m pretty sure it’s also stated that he only dated her because he felt like he had to because they were going to marry each other per their parents wishes because He was a Prince and she was a Princess….. so he didn’t even wanna date her to begin with like this entire movie franchise is a mess when it comes to Relationship Values.

The thing I don't understand is that, Mal said no one ever cared about her, loved her etc. but she has friends. Like what 😃. It's constantly said they're bad and don't deserve good and no one likes them like the bond between them doesn't even exist

I would suggest reading the books too. It gives a lot of depth to the all the characters when they can’t go into it in the movies. Especially for Carlos and Jay

I think the most interesting character in the entire Descendants franchise is Carlos. He's the less "evil" of the bunch. Mal is being rotten because her mom's pressure. Evie is playing dumb because her mom made her think that external beauty is everything. Jay is a brute and reckless at worst. But Carlos...he's just a sweet child who has been traumatized by his mom. The books explored more of the characters and Carlos had the worst living condition with his mom. His development in the series from a traumatized little kid to a confident young man is what always made me love the franchise. Carlos is my fave part of the franchise together with Evie

In the books Mal actually tells us her full name is Maleficent which adds to her y'know pressure to be like her mom and shows how self-centred Maleficent really is

Negative I know you don't hear "I want to go to school" willingly, but believe there are more kids out there that there great wish is to have a good study and friends from school, and sadly mostly of those kids are broken kids, that come from broken homes or no homes. Kids that don't appreciate, I call myself guilty too, is because we live in such a comfort that we really don't care of our future, surviving.

I like Descendants, but I can't forgive the Core Four for being literal class traitors who were fine with leaving every other child born in the same dire situation (literally no one had fresh food or water) on that island.

The fact that the kids didn't want to be their parents is why I like these movies. Why? Let's be honest here who wants to be their parents? Nobody.

I remember as a kid thinking “oh decedents had more movies but why didn’t Ever After high didn’t ?” *Oh innocent me, little did I know I witnessed a murder* ;-;

I love Decendants. I love it because it's the same concept as Ever After High, but with a Disney twist. I just hate how Ever After High was lost thanks to it. It was so much better. Instead of competing, why couldn't they just coexist? I love them both, and it makes me wanna write something similar one day.

if you ever want to dive into a disney property sort of similar to descendants, here's my cue to recommend disney's twisted wonderland. it's about characters inspired by classic disney villains going to a school for magicians. the story is fun and very compelling, and there are a lot of characters to get attached to. oh, and did i mention everyone's an anime guy? as much as i want you to make a video on twisted wonderland now, i'd say wait until the upcoming anime adaptation releases and gets a localization, or at the very least a fansub. the only media available currently is a mobile game, which is only in japanese, so the translations of which can't always be reliable. either way, it would be very fun to see your take on the story and characters someday!

Three things: 1. I loved the moment when Sleeping Beauty's grandmother confronts Mal about how she missed raising her daughter. That was so impactful and emotional. 2. Anyone who complains about the rap cover of Be Our Guest never grew up with Disney Mania and it shows. 3. Ben is a stalker. He knew about Mal and all her friends before hand and invited her specifically to get with her.

I thought the Beast’s statue was very creative- the fact that Doug’s father didn’t choose to abandon the story behind the curse, and show his history openly to everyone like he finally came to terms with it and accepts it as part of himself. Its a small detail but a nice one

You aren't wrong bro. At best, Descendants is mediocre. The first movie is alright but nothing special, numerous other Disney Channel movies are just as good and frankly, a lot are better but aren't as popular. But the rest of the Descendants franchise is horrible. The second film was bad and the third was even worse and nonsensical. You could tell by that third film that they were just doing whatever crazy thing they wanted to because they were running out of ideas and were just going for shock value. And don't get me started on the Wicked World animated shorts, *pure commercial garbage.* Disney made one mediocre movie and managed to milk the franchise for 6 years, what a totally waste of money and resources. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure Descendants made money, but it didn't many anything appropriately meaningful for all it's fame and popularity.

I was a Monster High kid and got into Ever After High by extension but then I began to fall off it as the doll quality dropped (for both franchises) and it felt like Mattel stopped trying. It was only after this I jumped into Descendants because of the songs and Disney tie ins as I love classic Disney a lot. I still prefer EAH overall but it was Mattel's quality drop that sent me to Descendants in the end.

100% Ever after high is better. The descendants had good music ngl, however I felt the villains kids stopped being evil to fast and I didn't like that. Mal legit stole Aubrey boyfriend (you can't steal a person but like there's magic in involved so) and it wasn't touched upon until the 3rd movie. Did they even have a break up scene? I did enjoy evil Aubrey tho, she was worst then Mal and I enjoyed that.

I just wanted to ask everyone in the comments, who's your favorite Ever After High character? Mine is probably Duchess Swan. You don't see much of her show wise, but in her own book its revealed she deals with the constant fear of becoming a swan. Yearning for a happily ever after she knows she will never get. Headmaster Grimm uses Duchess's fear of her curse to put her into villainly classes, hoping that if she did well enough in them, Duchess would move onto advanced villainly classes and break her curse. Headmaster Grimm is essentally trying to turn Duchess Swan into a replacement evil queen for raven. HOW COOL IS THAT?

A big plot point really is; why did they stop using magic? It makes sense for the villains and their kids, as they have been blocked off from magic on their island, so they don't even have a choice when it comes to using it or not. But for the "good guys", why would they stop? If evil magic only gets used by evil people and they are all locked up on an island with no magic, nothing should stop the rest of them from using magic. A good plot point when it comes to the use of magic could be that the magical barrier around the villain island uses so much magic that there isn't a lot left for the rest of the land afterwards. Or that, in some kind of solidarity to the villains who, while being bad people, are still people who have lived with magic all their life. So they cut down on the magic that is allowed to be used (meaning very small spells are alright, magic missed with technology, etc.), while older and much more powerful artefacts (like the wand) is kept as memoirs from the past and only used for special occasions, like the coronation. I just want some kind of explanation. I know it is adisney movie, but it could legit just have been the most stupid excuse that they mentioned in the beginning, and then it was never mentioned again, and I would be happy.

You have to admit that the acting and chemistry of and between the actors is very good. The plot may be silly (and stolen *cough couch*) but... 1) Mal's smooth manipulation of Jane. Within minutes of meeting her Mal realises the things Jane is insecure about and uses it for her own gain. By the end of the conversation Jane is questioning if her own mother loves her. Her toxicity is that strong. To me, that's what proves Mal is Maleficent's daughter, raised to be evil. 2) The Core 4's friendship and platonic chemistry. Every time they are on screen together they give a sibling-like chemistry that shows a realistic portrayal of a shared childhood. 3) Mal's scene with Evie of getting ready for her date with Ben. I love how they subtly speak up about their traumatic childhoods. Evie's: "Are you afraid of your mom" and Mal's "I just want her to be proud of me" also proves that while they were all raised by bad parents in poor surroundings, there are still small differences in their upbringing. 4) Mal's chemistry with Ben. It doesn't feel forced, and they are adorable. They are very different, but at the core of things they are both worldly, broad-minded people who rely on their instinct greatly. Both are also natural leaders, and in a film full of toxic parenthood, they are the only ones to stand up to their parents. In a way, they have much in common. Also the fact that he is the first person for whom she cares enough to cry a tear of sadness. 5) Evie's chemistry with Doug is amazing. It is so much more than "nerd falls for hot girl". Doug is interested in Evie because she is different from all other girls. She has an unique perspective of the world. He loves her for her intelligence and she loves him because he is genuinely interested in all her qualities, and because he is courageous. He believed in her innocence from the start and bravely stood up for her in class. O.T.P. 6) Lonnie has a great character. I love that they didn't make her just like Mulan. She is uplifting, traditionally feminine and a bit naive, though very kind. Not necessarily what one would expect from Mulan's daughter, so great move, movie! Lonnie's "I just thought: even villains love their kids" caused an emotional catharsis. Her empathy is transmitting the audience's sympathy for the main characters.

Descendants implies that the royalty is somewhat evil, but it never goes into it, so that’s what happened to their magic.

I liked both EAH and Descendants because of their similar ideas and their both very nostalgic to me. But I definitely liked Monster High more then both of them combined.

The movie actually goes SUPER light on the truly horrific mental and emotional abuse the main cast faced in the books - For instance, Carlos standing up to his mom about the dog is a big deal because she actually treated him like a dog & servant (he sleeps in this spare room area in back of her coat closet and doesn't even have his own mattress there) while every time Mal doesn't met her mom's expectations she blames it on her dad's genetics - and the second movie delves into the children still left behind & the resentment they feel. I do think EAH was good and still love it but this franchise definitely bests them as far as diversity and letting us have more hard conversations about personal choice & duty. (Also, it's long since been rumored that the reason Mattel and Disney fell out is because originally Descendants and EAH were the *SAME* property but that mattel spun in their own direction and launched first). I don't think Disney was truly to blame for EAH's collapsing so much as mattel's typical sabotaging of their doll line franchises. Hell, the studio that did their animation didn't even get official notice the show was over and no one knows why they did things like change all the face sculpts and skew younger either.

Honestly, the first movie was probably the best of the bunch, as it goes downhill in the next film when....they basically forget the kids on the Isle for six months and yet, still expect you to root for Auradon over Uma and co, and even had Mal try to spell Ben's memories...cause he realized she was lying, and number three....basically does an UNO and makes the VKs forgive their toxic families cause apparently they were good this entire time, while also again, villainizing someone who got hurt by Mal's actions, cause Ben and Mal apparently forgot for two years to say sorry to Audrey

I think my favorite part of Descendants was the found family aspect with Mal, Evie, Jay and Carlos. The fact that the four of them becoming closer friends instead of just allies and loving each other was part of them choosing to stay in auradon (a place where they can do that without being seen as weak) was just so sweet and important to me.

This movie franchise is such a guilty pleasure and I listen to OST every now and then, especially to the third movie. I also appreciate how they acknowledge Cameron Boyce's death in animated special making it a really touching moment.

Real talk Descendants 1: Kinda mid; average but a good starting point Descendants 2: Actually good with better jokes and better songs and a better plot that is a homage to a disney movie (but with bad CGI which makes it amazing) Descendants 3: We really didn't need it This coming from someone who knows nothing about ever after high to be fair

Lotta people comparing it to EAH (which is fair), but I feel that in its own singular context, Descendants isnt terrible. A lot of the music slaps, and considering it's a "Disney teen live action" thing, the acting could be worse. While the 1st film was meh, the 2nd and 3rd, as well as the books and the tv series were kinda okay, all things considered. Ever After High is still significantly better though and should exist significantly more than Descendants

4:40 I agree. I feel like the daughter of the Evil Queen should've been the main character. The Evil Queen was truly evil and she was born that way. However Maleficient used to be a fairy, the only reason she became evil was because she was betrayed, and she wanted revenge for her mistreatment. The Evil Queen was evil because she wanted to be the most loved, however she felt snow white was stealing the attention/spotlight from her. Plus she poisoned Snow White, where as Maleficient put a curse on Aroha, and there was only a chance Aroha would be deceived. Maleficient is a fairy so Mal should have been born a fairy.

I remember liking descendants when I saw it a few years ago, despite/ because of how "bad" it is. In the way that many Disney Channel things are bad, esp when they cross over with the "bad" of teen demographic. I totally 100% get the bitterness about ending a better franchise though lmao. I can't actually remember any off the top of my head, but that's def something I've done before

Oh, my sister was OBSESSED with this trilogy, show, books and so on. It's also painful that she was also obsessed with Ever after high. I wasn't bothered by Ever after high, but descendants, oh descendants was dreadful. I can't remember which one she went on about last.

Honestly my favourite parts of these movies is evie and Doug- I love seeing Evie embrace her smarts and witts, and her and Doug work really nicely together. Very underrated ship in my opinion

Even though it will never live up to the vastly superior EAH, I did always like the wattpadesque story of the movie and the music. It knows it can't be crazy enough to be once upon a time, and it also knows it's main demographic would be edgy tweens who like going to Disney villain nights with their parents, and that's who it sold to. While I don't think it handles its themes of prejudice and classim well at all, I think like what Legend said, the way it handles it's themes of being more than your parents and becoming your own person is. Maybe it is ironic considering how it was advertised, but I personally think that this is the perfect message for this kinda story. To start off with certain expectations only to have them be gone at the end.

I wish that ever after high and descendants could of existed in peace I like them both but if I had to choose between the two I would choose ever after high. I hope Mattel reboots ever after high if the monster high reboot does well

I'm pretty sure the Evil Queen married into queendom, by marrying Snow White's father. Maleficent was powerful for her magic and scared the woodland fairies and people into "respecting" her, Cruella de Vil designed clothing so wasn't too popular and Jafar was the sultan's grand vizier + sorcerer. Also, if I remember correctly, in the books, Mal's mom said "you haven't earned your full name yet"?? LOL

My favorite fun fact about this franchise is that it’s implied that in a hilariously petty act on the heroes’ part, a lot of Disney villains were revived from the dead specifically to imprison on an island.

i have some backstories for the villains! with the evil queen she married into the family after the old queen died. as for Maleficent she was just an evil fairy, but back in medieval times a christening that was as big as Auroras was (she was a princess) it was pretty much common etiquette that everyone was invited. so, when they didn't invite Maleficent, she gets pissed, and rightfully so, she even gives them a chance to apologize. they insult her even more though, so she gets some hard-earned revenge

Decendants, High School Musical.... all those types of Disney shows. I just... I can't fall in love with them. Sure one or two spots are good but I could never get into how campy and the writing was. It made me feel like I was losing brain cells. Not for me, can see why others like it but not for me.

I am still sad Ever After High was cancelled but I do love Descendants. I"m glad you gave it another chance!

All I think is that Carlos and Jay deserved more attention,some of the songs still hold up but not all of them,and while I respect anyone who likes this franchise I'm still eternally mad at it for basically killing Ever After High that damn mouse doesn't let us have anything

Descendant actually had a mint series in-between 1 and 2. It’s called “descendants wicked world”. I’m not 100% sure if its canon. But you should check it’s out before you do descendant 2!

I actually hiked a mountain in ballet flats, lol. My cousin is obsessed with descendants so I watched it with her, and they got Kristin Chenoweth of Broadway fame to be maleficent. She was Glinda in the original cast of Wicked. And the comedian Maz Jobrani plays Jafaar, which is a shame because he has like no lines. His standup is great though. And the guy who worked on Descendants did the music/choreography for High School Musical. Also Dove Cameron who plays Mal was also on Broadway at some point

I haven't watched Negative Legend's channel in a long time but hearing him talk about how similar his struggles were to Mal and how he is reminded of his own parents when it came to this version of Maleficent for the first time ever made me want to seriously hug him. I know such action would probably come off as uncomfortable for him and therefore would be an unwanted action but that's probably the only thing I could do as a way to offer him support since I'm not good with words in that kind of situation. I am glad he is learning to love according to what he said later on in the video. He deserves whatever happiness he finds in the both in the future as well as the present. The only thing I liked about Decendants is the song "Rotten to the core". Ever After High was a million times better. Nothing can change that for me.

I wasn't in the target demographic when this came out but I loved it and it touched my heart multiple times. I also watched it at the perfect time in my life when I was considering becoming a full-time student to get a degree so I could get the job I really want. However, my family has lived off of disability checks all my life and I was always told that secondary education was for those with money. I was always taught that I was never going to college/university because I'm poor. This movie didn't change my life, but it did encourage me to try for something other then my my family said I could.

I think the main reason I love this series so much (yea, even the third movie) is because of the... Inexplicable Disney Channel Magic (TM) that makes nearly everything on Disney Channel enjoyable. Somehow, everything on it is so cringe and so cheesy but you also can't help but smile at it (and dance along to the musical numbers).

Oh my God preach! I was 15 when Disendants came out and I was so pissed that Disney was ripping off Ever After High. Ever After High was so much better written, had wrote and developed much better characters and handled this concept a million times better! I’ve been salty about it ever since! How dare you say Maleficent is a bad movie though? 😄
