The FULL RESTORATION of a Beautiful Writing Bureau/Secretary Desk.
This Bureau/Desk has been in my customers family for a very long time and is very special to her. Although on first glance this looks in good condition it did have issues and needed a lot more work than you'd think.

As we have come to expect from a gifted craftsman like you, a superb restoration. Your client will be thrilled with it and with your attention to the smallest detail. Hi Pamela, thanks so much and I’m fully recovered now thankfully. Daisy and Bella are so funny and they definitely keep me entertained 😂😂 I’m really pleased with how my channel is growing and hopefully one day soon i can add more videos for you all to watch. Hi Dave. Cocktail cabinet has gone down a treat and so have its many contents haha. I had about 20 different large bottles of different concoctions. It's down to 2 now thanks to friends. Hey David! The remains of the finish and what it looked like when it was removed suggest that it is colorless nitro lacquer (nitrocellulose lacquer). It was invented around 1920 and quickly became popular because it looked like shellac but was much easier to use. That also correlates well with the time the furniture is from, I think around 1930/40. This varnish tends to go blind when it is old enough, and you can often only guess at the grain of the wood. It is often not easy to remove, especially when several layers have been sprayed on top of each other. Its advantage is that it protects the wood relatively well (as you can see from the ink stains). Good job, fun to watch. Thanks for that!

You've produced a quite elegant writing desk for your customer. The wood grain is astonishing and I'm so glad you didn't try to paint it. Don't ever apologize for a fan in your workshop. Besides the heat we're all living through this summer, you could be using a fan to exhaust bad fumes or any number of reasons around the work shop. Thank you for this beautiful desk, and for introducing us to Bella and her tennis ball. I bet those 2 play until they almost drop dead. And I mustn't forget to thank you for the dovetails. I've never seen anyone use the TLC you do on the finer points. It truly makes your work stand out above others. Cheers from Oklahoma!!!

Absolutely stunning! I have a Victorian drum top secretary that I want to refinish, but I’ve never done any furniture before. The drawer pools look amazing, and to think you did it with vinegar and water and used steel wool! Wish I could bring my secretary over to the UK for you to do ! I’ll watch more of your videos !

Beautiful writing desk! My grandfather had one. He was really good about letting me turn it in to a place for me to play house with Barbies and accessories! I will be getting one one day. I hope it looks a lot like this one🙂

That turned out beautifully. I love it. Well done. I can sympathise with you about the heat. Here in western Canada it has been hot and dry since April hence all our wild fires. We’ve all been breathing smoky air since May with some days being so bad you can’t see the house across the street. Last week our temperatures hit 41.3C and I have to say, for the first time in years, that I’m looking forward to winter and the snow.

Considering there wasn’t any repairs as such to carry out, it certainly required a lot of work to prep this thoroughly before you could start the finish. Fantastic end product David. I’m sure the client will be over the moon Ps I have a bureau here for you when you’re ready 🤣🤣

A few years ago this writing desk would have been seen as old fashioned. Today we aapreciate the quality and design ecause it is perfect for working with a laptop. Plenty of cubby holes for all the correspondence, bank books etc. Plus it is not too big for our modern homes. Another good restoration of a piece of furniture that otherwise, would have been chopped up.

It was quite a ghastly yellow. You toned that down beautifully. Nice job. Bella is a cutie. I have to strip my long haired terrier every summer. This one has been very brutal. Today is is 106, or 41c. Shut cats and dogs both in the house. Had one cat get dehydrated. It was scary.

David, I have just started the basics on a bureau almost similar to that you have in this video. I will admit that I intend to restore mine by cribbing from you, as long as you do not object. You have the benefit over me as I am not able to afford the quality of your tools, sander etc; but will attempt to produce a good job. I am only doing this as a practice exercise and have no great desire to sell it on, in fact most of my catchment area would not be able to afford a higher price than say £40 in my experience so I end up donating my finished pieces. But I will be satisfied to get a good finish which is the objective for me, as it is just a hobby piece for me. It's so nice to see Daisy and her Bella helping you with the work, I'm sure they never get in your way.

My Sander is an expensive one but I use it endlessly and I saw it as an investment but cheaper Random Orbital sanders are perfectly fine, just go slow with the sanding process and work your way up through the different grits. This was a dated ugly duckling; I thought the glossy finish awful and didn't like the handles. It is now a glowing, handsome piece of furniture - such a transformation! The handles redeemed themselves after you polished them and your choice of finish is excellent. Lucky customer 🙂
