Replacing the rear speakers in my girlfriend's 2003 Civic EX Coupe. Step-by-step instructions. See below for links to parts and tools.
This was one of the most difficult speaker replacements I've done. But don't be scared off by that - it's definitely doable. But it's a whole lot more work than it could have been if the vehicle had been engineered just a little differently. The problem is the bolts that hold the speakers in are not accessible until you remove the rear deck panel, which also contains the factory speaker grills. And to get that off you have to remove both rear seatbacks, both pillar panels and the rear passenger side panel.

10mm wrench or socket
8 mm wrench or socket
Phillips screwdriver
Hammer (maybe)
Speakers - the new speakers are Pioneer 6" x 9" TS-G690, 3-way, 45 watts RMS, 400 watts peak, 90 db sensitivity, 4 ohms. They sound very nice (OEM replacement quality). They match well with the head unit, which puts out 14 watts RMS, 50 watts peak. .

Thank you so much Maynard. This video reallly helped me. I was breaking my head for the longest trying to figure it out. If I may add something to your video. For those that have the coupe you need to remove the bolt for the seal belt rail behind the passenger seat. The bolt is a 14mm socket. You can remove both bolts or if you can shimmy the rail up after having loosened the bolt. The bolt doesn’t come out though so be gentle when removing it out the way.

My condolences. 🙂 It's an awful lot of trouble to have to go through just to change speakers, but it's the only way to do it unless you don't mind getting in there with a grinder.

Great video now the smart thing to do would be to mount the speakers from underneath when reinstalling very simple by getting I believe they're called clip nuts that way you don't have to go through this hassle again

Thank you so much. Your video is wonderful. I'm not sure what's happening with my car speakers. They are giving out static sounds. I'm gonna replace my speakers hopefully that helps.
@bored2323
@bored2323 3 жыл бұрын
If it’s static it’s most likely a ground wire in the head unit ( CD player ) if it’s when your using the radio it’s the antenna connection. Both of these would mean you need a need CD player head unit and not speakers .
@MTMiser
@MTMiser 3 жыл бұрын
Adding to what Mr S said, it could also be a torn speaker (as was the case in the video), some debris on top of the speaker or a loose connection. Hope you get to the bottom of it!

Were the Pioneer 6" x 9" TS-G690 speakers direct bolt in? All the holes lined up and didn't have to drill new holes?

I’m gonna just cut the speaker vents off with a dremel for the rear 😅I did the front speakers this morning and it was a pain. It’s a beater anyway and I don’t really plan on reselling. I’m not taking all of the crap apart.😂
@MTMiser
@MTMiser 5 ай бұрын
That's probably the best way to go. It is really a pain to do it the way I did in the video. But it was my wife's car, so I didn't think she'd appreciate me going at it with a grinder and a jack hammer, lol.
@arestheking7912
@arestheking7912 5 ай бұрын
@@MTMiser well I ended up taking it all apart😂 I definitely would’ve not had enough clearance and no way would I have been able to take the bolts out holding the speakers down. Took me about an hour and a half but sounds 3x better! Thanks for the video. Now I gotta swap the head unit, install amp and subwoofer.

Would these speakers work on an 03 sedan civic ?
@MTMiser
@MTMiser 2 жыл бұрын
No, I believe your car takes 5-1/4" round speakers for the rear deck. Here's a list of speakers that Crutchfield's shows to work for your model, but make sure they are rated correctly for the power your head unit or amp puts out. www.crutchfield.com/g_400/All-Car-Speakers.html?tp=105&l=E&pg=2

Would the speakes be the same size on a 05 ex coupe?
@MTMiser
@MTMiser 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, they should be the same on the 2001 to 2005 Civic Coupes, and possibly the sedans too but I'm not sure about the sedans. You can look to see - just open the trunk and look up under the rear deck.
