I did the hack using straight pins. Mine pins were kind of on the thin side, but my basket was not bouncing as much as the one you had in your video. So i gave it a try since my suspension rod plastic collar had some give but not as much as the one in your video. It worked great. I figured I would rather try the hack instead of buying some generic brand from Amazon and where the quality might not be the best.

Great tip, here’s a tip for you all. When retrieving the tension rods through the eye hole of the retainer, I take a extra tension rod or spring, turn it upside down, using the hook to grab the other hook and pull it up through the eye hole/retainer cup. 👍 it doesn’t take as much muscle.

Amazing! Worked! I used 2" safety pins. Couple of additional tips from my experience. When separating the damper with the putty knife I held the bottom half with pliers because it was greasy. This allowed the top part to come off very easily. When pulling down on the safety pin part to slide it between the damper and the rod I held and pushed the pin with needle nose pliers as I pulled down on the top part of the damper. When reinstalling the top part of the rod after sliding it up through the mount, I found it was easiest just to reach down and grab the bottom of the rod with my hand so the rod stays up and you can reattach that plastic thing at the top. Very much appreciate the video. Thanks for sharing.

tried the hack and cured my whirlpool. This machine is like a Ford. Not quick and easy slots but doable if you're patient and can get underneath. Just saves time to have slots. Thank you for sharing!!!! I left the curl on the pin to hold it in place. Use pliers to hold the black housing and a dull screw driver. Pops off first try. Lay a small mirror on the floor to find the hole if you don't have slots.

Sometimes those darn suspension rods can be a total pain in the you know what if things don't go smoothly during the process to change them. The plastic around the tub or the metal cabinet will shred your arms up if you don't protect your arms and hands. The rubber gloves he recommended is a great tip also, especially if you are going back with new rods. Amazing how they make something so simple such a headache!

I have this same Maytag washer/dryer pair! The only part replaced were the suspension rods. They have 2 functions: A) spring support the tub. And B) DAMPEN the movement of the tub especially during the spin cycle. The portion on these rods that provide the DAMPENING are really cheap and cheezy design. I'd say just replace em all and move on like I did and DON"T buy the knock off parts (I tried em and they were incorrect length). Cheers!!

Bravo my friend. I have a Brand New Maytag MVWB765Fw. It was manufactured in 2019 but I just bought it 2 weeks ago on a major league discount and in the box factory (allegedly) new. After firing it up it was apparent the 4 inlet valve was not working so I replaced that. Then it was out of balance crazy on all cycles. Your video was the first I saw. I used a paper clip in each one so the plastic was really tight and Voila, The wife now has a brand new Maytag that works quite well thanks to your fix. I have to say WTF to Maytag. How can a washer never used out of the box 5 years old have two major defective parts in it like that? You telling me time, good ole fashioned "Time" degrades a valve and a suspension rod and its parts? Most ridiculous thing ever. My parents had a GE Washer made in 1953 that was handed down from my Great Aunt to my Mom and it lasted until 1993 when the power company bought it back along with the 40 year old GE refridgerator for 5 times what my Aunt paid for it in 1953. Dont make 'em like they used to. Thanks again Brother Maytagger!

Thanks for the safety pin hack! Our Maytag machine doesn't bang around with a large-ish load now. I tried another hack where someone suggested using tarp straps with the excess wrapped around the rod, but I couldn't get the wrap to stay put, so I strapped the bottom end to the base of the washing machine as there are holes there. Didn't last long as one strap unhooked at the bottom then all we'd hear is the loose strap and metal hook slapping against the metal "box" of the washer. I was going to try using split shaft 1/4” collars which is a really nice hack, but it costs about $25/set in Canada. Cheaper than a set of suspension rods, but still not as cheap as the tarp straps (1.99 ea). So I kept on looking for other solutions and thankfully came across your video. We only had three large safety pins at home, so I used your method, but used the cut side on one as my fourth (with the safety locking head part). It took a bit more effort to insert into the plastic bit, but I eventually got it in by hammering the cut end a little more tapered. It's been about 2 weeks and no annoying banging noise when running. Rather disappointed to hear Maytag was bought by Whirlpool and made in the same factory. You'd think "Designed, Assembled, blah blah in America" would stand for better quality which is why we bought a Maytag washer. If they just added split collars to the rods (or safety pins ;), it would probably solve the issue permanently. Worst case scenario maybe you have to pull out the rods and tighten the split collars every X years.

Point being, Folks - treat your old appliances like cherished family members and do your best to make them last as long as possible! And don’t get me started on the crappy quality of modern safety pins!! As a semi professional seamstress… These sorts of cheap chinese pins just drive me freaking insane! The points aren’t even sharp enough to pierce light fabrics without damage and they bend out is shape like wet noodles. Ugh!!

I could not figure out the problem and it was difficult to contact the manufacturer for warranty repair. I decided to purchase a basic whirlpool that costs hundreds less than the Maytag and didn’t come with a 10 year warranty label on the washing machine. It’s been working perfectly and have not had any issues. If this is such a common problem with Maytag why not redesign it? I will never buy another Maytag washing machine.

If I was doing this myself, I think I'd wuss out and buy new rods - my washer dryer are in a tiny shallow area, I'd not want to do this twice, lol. Interesting that the product description says that this Maytag was manufactured originally by Whirlpool. Turns out you can buy the top suspension hangers, those white cups with the slots for under $10 for four, you just find them listed as a Whirlpool part.

Try tightening the flywheel first to fix unbalanced load issues. It worked for me. Turn your washer on its side ( tape the lid shut to prevent it from opening and disconnect the water supply lines) Use a ¼” allen wrench to tighten the flywheel (bolt is in the middle of the round wheel) . It will be tight to turn. You can use a short piece of pipe on your wrench for extra leverage. Wear gloves so if the wrench slips you won’t hurt your hands. Hope it works🤞

My washer and dryer are up against each other. The washer used to move around maybe once a month when doing king sheets due to imbalance. SOLVED the problem forever. I placed a strip of clear packing tape on top and effectively taped them together. Tape from front to back - this will make them a single unit. The same tape has been on there for years and the washer has NEVER moved an inch. ⬜⬜ And being the tape is facing down... no lint or dust gets in to make the sticky side dirty.

I have an Maytag washer that spun violently and I could bounce the basket up and down easily by hand so the suspension rods were changed and then there was little bounce. I put a very small load in washer and it still spun violently and when I removed load of laundry the basket was again very loose after just one wash cycle. Me and my daughter are trying to fix this as my husband is severely disable and can not help so any suggestion or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Is the room/walls really shaking during the spin test at 10:45? If not, then perhaps turn off image stabilization if that's a feature on your camera, which apparently is trying to compensate for the machine wobbling by digitally manipulating the image.

Dated a chic that had an unnatural desire to wash door/bath mats. All of them. At once. Only time I've seen this failure. But I also had to bust the basement floor up to replace the drain pipe clogged with dog hair and rubber dingleberries. Her chocolate chip cookies were the best. Worth every second.

As long as I can keep the self-leveling setup on the back of my older Whirlpools from corroding and am able to get parts, I'll stick to those.

How long does this fix last? Seems like the metal the pin is made of could wear quickly and cause a redo of the hack.

What you can do with the lid is make the lid lock engage by starting a cycle so the lid is locked shut, then unplug it before it unlocks then lift the top and the lid will not fall and you won’t need to tape the lid…

Hi Ben, I really enjoy watching your videos. One of em, you discussed American made appliances, and better control on quality. I worked in an American factory for 24 years, a top fortune 500 company, cmm equipment, many inspectors, endless processes, you name it, they have it. Yet, even here in America, I see alot of poor quality workmanship by people who don't care, poorly trained, make up stories, nobody told me that. It goes on and on. In the thick of it, I bought a piece of fitness equipment by octane fitness, the ZR8. I was nervous when I saw on the box, "made in Tiawan". You wouldn't believe the workmanship that went into this "Tiawan" piece of equipment. The welds all look perfect. AMAZING welds. Top workmanship throughout. Then i go to work and see crap booger welds, and I wonder how these people passed the weld test. And this has gone on for many years. And I tell these people about the "Tiawan" welds. Some of these foreign factories really have their stuff together! Even Tiawan. Look up the Chinese car "NIO". Compare a Chinese made nio electric car to an American made tesla, where people are complaining about fit up of the body panels. And maybe you're spot on, American made appliances are better than other countries, i personally am seeing people who don't care, which is sad. Every job is a portrait of YOURSELF, make sure it says EXCELLENCE

Please understand the issue isn't foreign fridges it's foreign fridges available in the US. Korea has amazing standards. But the current LG line sucks due to massive multi billion dollar failures. Samsung QC across the board is bad. The great stuff in Thailand simply isn't available in the US like Mitsubishi. Somehow we also can't get Thailand. The Chinese mfg. Fridges I know of haven't been on the market long enough to make absolute calls on but their sealed system warranties and tech services are currently very poor. So that only leaves a scant few American units that are decent at this time. 15 years ago, LGs Korean plant made some of the best fridges for thr US market but that's not the case. I recognize that in many other fields foreign companies are better. Heck, I'm a HUGE Kia/Hyundai guy, but for fridges it's way way different.

Didn't you say the grease had leaked out? Seems like if you put a bunch in the bigger white cup & black boot it would get on the rod & might defeat the tightening you'd done with the pin 😁 Are you simply trying to put preload or limit the pinned cup to one spot on the rod so it won't move past the maximum spring length (plus a tiny bit of preload)? I'd be an idiot and let my OCD kick in and crimp a ferrule on to the shaft too. You can make one with a flat piece of sheet metal folded around & crimped or nut & bolted. A split ferrule can be made with a dremel or you can look at crimp connectors for wiring, butt connectors are often split, I've used the wire crimping part from ring terminals to reinforce failing cable ferrules on small stainless steel cable, you carefully pry them open enough then crimp the snot out of them with some serious crimpers😁 OCD and a good local hardware store can be a dangerous thing. Still haven't figured out what the second smaller white cup is supposed to do, act as a brake or add tension?

if you own the washer and its yours you can do what you want but as a tech what are you going to charge for a time consuming job that probably is not going to hold up. Just dealt with a maytag washer banging and put new suspension rods in and its still banging the sides. done this job many times but now and then you get one like this. also replaced the tub hub kit and still banging.

Thanks for your videos, Ben. I fixed the rods and it seemed to have worked because when I manually push down it does not bounce like it use to, I also did the reset and recalibration but I'm still having the same bouncing problem when the machine is spinning. My washer is a Whirlpool model WTW4816FW2. What else could it be?
