Yep great video. I just repaired a Simpson eziset. I used a friction/dampner grease on the wire shaft and other bits and it seems to working well so far. ( got this idea from a comments section on a repair video somewhere.) It's the same stuff they use in video game controls. Amazing sticky stuff . It was from NYE lubricants Inc , distributed by VKB- SIM Australia pty ltd. ( yes I'm in OZ ) . It was a synthetic hydrocarbon grease called Nyogel 767A. I have nothing to do with company. and there are probably other suppliers in the U.S. and other places. It came as a small jar in the mail with 5 grams in it. Enough for 4 suspension rods and cost $20-$30 with mail cost. Thanks hope this adds to all the great knowledge.

THE TRUTH: Everyone is focused on making the capsule grip the rod tighter to reduce the shaking, This can help, but it is not the solution. The reason these rods work to stop the shaking is that there is a special grease that has been applied to the rod where the capsule moves. This grease has the viscosity of honey. It is thick and it is sticky. The capsule must move through this grease, and when it does, its motion is considerably slowed. This is what prevents the shaking from happening and dampens the oscillations that would otherwise occur. The bottom line is that if the capsule is in good shape, or can be repaired even with a solid substance or solid replacement, applying the grease to the rod in the area it moves through is the long term fix. If replacing the rods, also apply this grease if it is not already present on the new rods. This grease is synthetic damping grease lubricant. It isn't cheap, but you don't need much for 4 rods. I found it sold on Amazon for about $10. You get 2 10 gram tubes. If you are doing lots of repairs, you can buy a 50 gram tube for $26.
@appliancerepairshorts

You are partially correct, I know that super tacky grease. It does work, but it doesn’t work on its own. The damper on the inside is a foam type material, that has some sort of grease, but Samsung has the tacky grease. I’m using something in combination on the Samsung suspension rods. I have not updated it yet. Thanks for your input
@rus1ifly
@rus1ifly 8 күн бұрын
@@appliancerepairshorts You are also partially correct. The foam piece inside the capsule must slide on the rod correctly as the capsule moves through the dampening grease. If that foam has deteriorated too much the dampening effect of the sticky grease can't work by itself. With worn suspension rods, the combination of your fix plus added grease will work for all but really worn out suspension rods. I have a Samsung washer and can confirm they use very sticky grease. The "shotgun" repair method may be the best and most practical way to go, I.e. replace the suspension rods with aftermarket rods from Amazon costing $40 or so for 4 of them, and coat them with the sticky grease when installing them?

Awesome! I'm a sucker for the simplicity of this. I have posted a different solution (I replace the "cup" with some epoxy; it holds the shape well and over a longer area against the rod). But your way also restricts the flow of grease between the rod and the piece of plastic. That's the magic! If the grease has broken down to yellow or brown, replace it (that will matter). This solution is easier to do than mine, though. I will try it on my next "bouncy house" washer! I'd be curious to see what happens if I do 2 rods this way and 2 rods my way in the same washer - which needs another "tweak," first. Seems like a science experiment I need to do on the next one ...
@appliancerepairshorts
@appliancerepairshorts Жыл бұрын
Awesome to hear about your idea. You are absolutely correct about the cup. So if you only do two rods, if will not stop the bouncing. If you have a load in. I’m curious on the epoxy because some suspension rods you cannot install the collars on. Some other guy uses rubber .

Very good repair. The issue is the black rubber grommet beneath that white cap is intentionally undersized so that it can't slide easy on the shaft and acts like a shock absorber. Like on a car to keep it from bouncing on its springs. But it wears out. An easier fix is to pull up the white cap exposing the black grommet and wrap a copper or steel wire around it and twist the ends until it is tight on the rod again. There's enough room inside that white cap to trim the twisted wire and bent it over against the grommet so the white cap slides over the twisted wire and it looks like new.

@appliancerepairshorts

Actually the damper that Whirlpool uses is soft rubber foam. The plastic that the collars are squeezing is actually harder. You also have a larger area of contact. I have seen it last 4 years then you can snug it up. I’m very curious as to how long it will last you. Please share your experience.

@appliancerepairshorts
@appliancerepairshorts Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, that seems like a lot of extra work. Not sure how that is actually reducing the bouncing. I think what is happening is, the rod where the damper goes up and down is super smooth. By raising it, you have introduced a rough section. I have done what you mentioned on old GE washer that the apron was sagging. The basket was rubbing on the bottom of the washer floor. I’m curious how that is working out.

I have 2 Samsung WA5200 machines and I replaced the rods with Chinese rods. They really didn't work and after watching many videos, I found yours. I had to use a 3/8" collar on the rods due to the larger size damper. I also had to replace the stock collar screws with #6x32x3/4 to allow for the girth of the fatter damper. I simply had to remove the back cover of the machines, which gave me access to the 2 rear rods without removing them. You CANNOT pre-install the clamps then rehang the rods because the damper won't fit back into the slotted flange on the tub where it is supposed to go when the clamps are installed. They must be installed with the rods hanging in place. Therein lies the problem. You cannot get access to the 2 front rods to install the clamps, unless you want to completely remove the tub first. So both machines have rather tight clamps on the 2 rear rods and none on the front 2. I have washed several horse blankets (one at a time) in the barn washer as well as other horse stuff about a half dozen times. NO MORE ERROR CODES so far. Thanks for sharing your expertise with us-It helped me solve a potentially costly fix.

@@appliancerepairshorts Found a different solution. Had some fly screen spline (rubber that holds fly screen in place) after replacing my fly screens. Is cheap to buy as well (got the idea from people that have used bungie straps). Used a half hitch to attach to bottom of each rod (this gives two pieces of cord, made them the same length) pulled nice and tight so won't slip off, put a collar above this to stop weight of drum filled with water pushing it off. May have been easier to secure to bottom of drum where rod goes or make some brackets out of metal or wood with holes on edges to easily tie to. Then wrapped eight times around rod, was able to secure at top by going up and around each rod and tying off with a further number of double half hitch knots (did four). Looped around again with a further four half hitches, until no cord is left over. So far, this solution has done around fifteen loads of washing without issue.

The Whirlpool washer doesn’t have anything to stop it for going side to side. At one point they had little springs, but offers no support.GE washers utilize the rubber dampening straps. The suspension rods when they are working correctly, it stop the bouncing around as well. Maybe if Whirlpool had something like GE, the rods would last longer

What's the idea of wearing gloves while you work? I see a lot of millennials wearing dainty little gloves while they work. I've hardly ever seen older generations (Boomers and X) wear gloves while they work. What's up with that? If you're afraid of getting your little paddies all dirty they make this stuff called Go Jo that'll get your hands clean as a whistle. It's even got lanolin in it to keep millennials hands soft and supple. Try it, you'll like it! BTW I like the attack on the suspension rods with the new hold-its. I would have bought them If'n I saw this vid first. New rods with burn a $100 bill right out of your pocket. Keep up the good work!

just now completed this repair with recalibration and running our first load. so i guess we'll see how it goes. just wanted to say that at first i only bought 1 set of collars and 1/2 way through the repair i accidently striped the threads on 1 collar. it was very easy to do with barely any pressure,, "cheap Chinese steel"😖. had to purchase a 2nd set and wait another day to complete the repair. upon restarting low and behold the 1st collar i tried striped as well, thankfully this time i had 3 more as backup. so the moral of the story is purchase more than what you think you need, you can always return them if they're not needed.🤔

You know I thought I included something about the in the video, I need to watch it again. I talked about using longer screws. If you are not careful as in evenly spaced out you could strip the screws. Yeah everything is made cheap. Keep me posted on your results
@chaser9363
@chaser9363 5 ай бұрын
@@appliancerepairshorts yeah,, I knew about evenly tightening the screws even before watching your vid,and I did do it properly with the 1st 2 but may have gotten a little over confident on the third one But as I said it was very easy, like almost no pressure at all and the threads just gave way. While on the others I was able to torque quite heavily with no problem. Therefore I put more blame on the inconsistency in quality of "Chinese" products. By the way, we did the first load and while it didn't go into a frenzied shake with that load it still shook pretty hard. Not sure if it was a normal shake or if maybe a different/heavier load would cause it to act up again. I also put a new metal hub in before this repair. That alone didn't work. Hopefully I'll get a good bit more use out of it. But if not we bought it used for $150 at least 5 years ago so if it's dead not a big deal, as I'd say we got our moneys worth.

This fix is genius. The manufacturer should add this to the washer design. I measured the thickness of 2 quarters as 0.130 inch which is slightly thicker than 1/8” = 0.125”. I then used calipers to check the gap width. Also, to ensure that the collar screws do not vibrate out, I added Threadlocking glue (the blue or orange version) where the screws can still be readjusted. Do not use the red version which is permanent.

@appliancerepairshorts
@appliancerepairshorts 7 ай бұрын
The collars are actually pretty well established. I’m a tech and have used them for a while before sharing. The reason why it is so effective is, you can increase the tension. Overtime as you lose tension, you can snug it up. As for your other comment concerning metal against plastic. The collars are against plastic. Just like the suspension rods have plastic on it. The O- ring idea might work, but how do you check the level of resistance. You can’t. I have tried different types. The collars are the best. Thanks for your input

Do you think the tub could be bent again. It has a ten year warranty but would i have to pay for a service call.

I tried this on my Kenmore and I still have the issue. I might’ve tightened it too much

Sorry I just noticed I didn’t respond. Yes if you tighten too much, you get a shaking, but a slightly different result. You should be able to push down and feel the tub slowly coming up. Not bouncing like before. Sorry better late than never

I hope I have not asked this already, but what about GE rods that have the long point in the cup but no foam.

I have a video of them on GE, but at the bottom. Basically it is lifting the tub up from grinding. What’s going on with the GE?

@@appliancerepairshortsSorry just now seeing this response. I have no idea what the problem was. It has been a while since I have really worked on any appliances. I have watched this video a few times and wondered if it was a GE with no foam you were fixing. I had ordered some double split clamps probably after watching this but lost them. Just got some more in I had intended to try on a Kenmore that shakes badly with clothes in it but spins quietly with no clothes in it. When I push down on the agitator and turn it loose, it seems to be very little if any actual bounce. Starting to wonder if it needs scrub pads.

Just put some collars on the Kenmore washer my friend needed fixed. I had to tighten them a little tighter than 2 quarters would fit. Have to wait to get a load of clothes to put in it to try it out. I wish I had some dampening grease to use but couldn’t find any I trusted locally, so I decided to try this fix. Might go to thrift store or yard sale to get some clothes just to test washers and dryers with. I had some but let them get away a long time ago. I assume I let them go with a washer it dryer I sold to someone.

Yes and no. Kenmore is unknown. If it is the same manufacturer and same model, yes

Fantastic idea, the collars worked perfect, i had to tighten and little bit more than the 2 quarters method, i ordered thru ebay, with free shipping. I figure now if it starts to get out of balance just tighten collars and fixed. Thank you for the video, and easy to understand instructions.

Appreciate the feedback. Yes the quarter method is pretty close, but sometimes a little bit tighter is best. Thanks for watching.

I did have to re-tighten the collars, but the good part is i did it just opening the top and reaching down to tighten about half turn each .@@appliancerepairshorts

I also had to go quite a bit tighter than 2 quarters. With 2 quarter gap I felt like they were still way too loose. I ran the washer and it worked good.
