I had the same issue on my BK... this is actually a known issue and there was actually a recall done in America on these cars incl. CX7... Living in RSA I had to fight with the dealership and Motor Warranty guys as their technicians didn't detect any issue with my chain becasue the car was still driving and the Diagnostic didn't detect any issues... here is another tip which i did to eventually convince them... wait until the motor has cooled down, then remove the oil cap and place your finger onto the belt, then see if you can lift the belt up. There should not be any slack, my belt i could actually take off the pulley with the amount of slack it had :O i eventually got my chain and tensioner replaced because of the fight i put up - they still deny anything was wrong... thanks for the great vid and making people aware

I havn’t found mine to be particularly sooty though, I’ve got 245,000k’s on it and after a 10,000k service interval the oil is still golden if you put a few drops on a piece of white cardboard. And my chain only just started to rattle last week, i think that’s pretty decent mileage from a chain on a performance model 👍🏻

Hey mate I have a 2007 Mazda 3 and there is an rattle coming from the engine. As described the rattle is there sometimes as soon as the engine is started but is quiet noticeable while driving especially above 2400 rpm. Driving up a hill when backing off the accelerator the engine rattles a lot. It doesn’t sound like a big end and it hasn’t developed into anything louder over the last month of driving but sounds more like a top end rattle. In your experience have you come across this type of scenario? Car has 219,000 k’s on the clock

Hi, I'm a 16 year old who got an 08 speed3 for $600 in the U.S. It has low compression in cylinders 2 and 3. I am trying to get the head off to check for warpage and check the head gasket. Also, I broke the connector on the VVT solenoid while removing the valve cover. Do I need to take the engine out of the car to get the head off? And do have any tips? (the car has 206K miles)

My engine had really dirty oil. i just been busy with work and school and forgot to schdule an oil change. The other day the engine light came on throwing p0017 code. This was followed by a slightl clicking or light rattle at 2000 rpm. But other than that it sounds smooth at start up and at above 2300 rpm i changed the oil and put syntetic oil, the engine light has gone away and the car drives smoother, but the click is still sometimes there. For example if im in idle and i rev till 2000rpm its there but when im driving it doesnt seem to be there. i was going to clean out the oil contol valve today and see if that fixes the slight rattle. do you think the ocv would be the culprit, or do you suggest checking something else? thank you

I have a 2010 Mazda 3 with a non turbo 2.5 motor with a little over 150,000 miles. I hear a rattle noise when I'm traveling 30 mph at 1,200rpm. When I give it more gas it goes away. Is the timing chain failing?

how many hours does it take to do the timing chain.?

So when the cams are locked and chain is removed, should the VVT sprocket move at all ? Getting about 1/2 tooth of free play in mine. Chain guides look brand new but tensioner is about 1/3rd of way extended out. 2011 with 120k miles. Getting cold rattle for a second or two cold or warm. Thanks for the vid.

I have the gen 2 with about 110k miles, I hear that rattling you talk about but I'm also having the vehicle sort of sputter and jerk on high boost. Is this related as well?

I get a rattle when it warms up…could that be chain starting to fail? Or maybe tensioner beginning to fail?

I just opened up my 6 MPS to fix a slight leak from the rocker cover (a workshop pulled the cover off when trying to diagnose an engine misfire and didn't replace the gasket). The issue turned out to be a fuel injector... Anyway, I noticed that the chain has plenty of slack. I can wiggle it quite a bit. What is the urgency on replacing the chain and VVT? I haven't got the parts yet and still need to drive it.
