Check out the full review of the Mazda MX-30 here: www.electrifying.com/reviews/...
There are plenty of interesting innovations and neat bits of design in Mazda’s MX-30, the company’s first electric car. But there is one element which sticks in our memory: the cork interior. But the cork’s use in the MX-30 is an indication that this is a company who likes to do things a little differently.
In fact, while Japanese rivals from Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Mitsubishi have been building hybrids and electric cars for more than a decade, Mazda has resisted the current flow. But now, with the end of internal combustion engines looming and the imposition of heavy emissions taxes, Mazda is bowing to the trend. But it’s not going to go the usual way.
The MX-30, which can now be ordered at prices starting at £25,545, looks striking for a start. Its most obvious rivals are the MINI Electric and the Honda e, both of which are thoroughly modern but have cutesy retro styling. The Mazda instead has a futuristic SUV-like look and pillarless doors, just like a BMW i3.
The other element the MX-30 shares with the MINI and Honda is a surprisingly small battery at 35.5 kWh. This results in a range of just 124 miles.
So, does that small range write off the MX-30 before it's even started, or is it an electric car you should be considering? Nicki Shields finds out.

As an owner of MX30, I can say that this car is great, but not for everyone. This is my daily car - I travel approx. 50-70km per day alone/with one kid. Also, I have my own plug to charge it in my garage. The range is not an issue for me - as I have a second - petrol car, which I use for long-distance journeys with my full family(2+2). For short distances - we pick MX30. Sure - the should be more space in a second row as the front under the hood is mostly empty. Sure the windows in the second row are small. But the suicide doors are great if You have children. There is no way they would be able to open them by themself and I find that as a great positive. Also - the interior of this car is amazing. The driving experience is also very pleasant. The bose audio and 360-degree camera system is extremely good - as well as a whole car feels to be produced very well. As a price - add all those safety systems and additional features to the mini and it will be much more expensive.

Great gorgeous car! Range is not a problem for me as well: after 2k km since December, theoretic range is 230 km! I live in northern Italy and, of course, I pay attention in driving efficiently. No highway in my normal commuting: work and kid from school, as you do. 5 steps regen steer paddles utilisation makes a significant difference, in my opinion. Great quality, comfortable and safe. Would buy it again without doubt. Enjoy your cool car, mate! 😎

So in our family we currently drive the MX-30 and the id.3. Maybe surprisingly the Mazda is where my heart is. If you like cars you will appreciate the Swiss watch quality, predictability and reliability with this Japanese outlier. Preconditioning works, lights are terrific, standard stereo great, the drive is smooth. But the thing is its just really, really nice. Charging, range, torque id.3 wins hands down. But...

I have covered 4,300 miles in 33 months with most of my driving within Birmingham with a couple of runs to Coventry and Kenilworth. Often one up or two up and a Jack Russell in a crate behind me on the rear seat, using the same fixing you use for a child seat. I have a drive and large brick and tile carport. So this might very well suit me. As to speed my racing years are behind me. So thank you, Nicki, for laying out the points to reflect on.

Most customers eagerly pay another 10 grand to get a range they may need only once or twice a year. They could easily rent a car and save a lot of money, but no, they want to lay out the extra cash. How stupd is this? For me, the Mazda MX 30 is exactly what I need!

Bonnet way too long, rear seat space way too small, battery way too small, apart from that is just about OK. If they stopped designing it to also have an ICE engine all these problems can be fixed, see the ID.3. What is the ideal range? 300 miles, drive all week if normal commuting, charge once a week, on a trip drive for 200 miles, charge whilst having a proper 30 minutes down time, carry on for another 200 miles or get to the destination. The "spare" 100 miles means this can be done in the depths of winter and ensures you can find a working charger without issue. Also please do not complain about the cork, it is soooo much better than the shiny black plastic used by rivals. No fingerprints!

Another great review Nicki, you, Ginny and Tom do a great job with your sensible and well informed views. I like the looks, and from what you tell me here the MX30 would indeed work for us, we're retired city dwellers and only cover around 25-30 miles a week. Just a couple of tiny points to make which may boost your subscribers and views as no other channel as far as I'm aware includes it. 1. Owners need to know where the plug-in point is on the car for several reasons, charger access, forward or reverse parking to your charger and limited space being the most important. It sounds trivial but some owners can only park a certain way, in my case reversing onto my driveway as we have limited access. This leaves the charging socket on the wrong side of the car, not a big deal for myself or others but it may be a bigger issue for others. Length of charging cables maybe worth a mention too for each model you review. I did note here after a quick rewind the socket for the Mazda was rear offside. 👍 2. Friends of ours live in a large Victorian house and they only have on street parking. It may also help if your channel in a seperate video covered the legal aspects of running charging cables across the public footpath as it seems to be a bit of a minefield if you check this out. As far as I'm aware it is legal but only if you take precautions like using a black and yellow striped cable ramp to prevent a trip hazzard. Keep up the great work. 😎

I really like the appearance of the MX-30 especially on the inside. It’s clean-cut, elegant and I especially like that thin steering wheel. That range definitely is a bit of a bummer though. I certainly won’t use the full range on a daily basis, but I often like going further afield on the weekends.

If you are in the market for this, I genuinely don’t get why you would get the MX-30 over a second hand BMW i3. The i3 will be cheaper, faster, better suspension, no weird fake engine noise, smaller footprint, very similar interior space, equally interesting interior design, faster charging, better efficiency, lighter, and the list just goes on...

Shorter range, cheaper and lighter makes a lot of sense. This range would be more than enough for me 95% of the time. Giving up range for increased agility is the a choice I would make simply for driving pleasure. My only issues with this car is the power. I need a 6-7 second 0-100kph at the very least. @@dadjv1926 Watch hubnut driving from Wales to Scotland in a Jaguar iPace. That car has a big battery. But it took an incredibly long time to charge if he drained the battery. Therefore he found topping up little and often was better. Charging infrastructure still needs to improve. I do like the Mazda MX30, thought the idea behind the cork was Mazda did make cork once....My EV has a 28kwh battery and chargers up to give 155 miles in the summer and sub-zero temperatures around 125 miles. The thing I noticed is reviewers always mention how switching on heat, lights or aircon reduced the range , indeed but switch them off and the range will increase as the Ai recalculates on revised power loading, I.e. not lost miles 😊.

I find it annoying when it has a small battery so "that it is more efficient cos it does not have a big battery". But do the maths, its rated efficiency is 124/35.5 = 3.5 mile/kWh. That is crap compared to zoe, e-nero, kona, tesla M3. This is not as bad as the EQC or etron but this is crap when they are saying "small battery so must be efficient". I have a plug in hybrid where I get about 70 - 80 km on the battery in city / suburb. For the few times (like maybe three or four times in the past few years) I've used the range extender I would rather have more battery or a lighter car (better electric range) and not have to worry about the ICE maintenance long term. It one of the biggest reasons the car didn't sell well and was replaced with an all electric version which sold better.

A car that keeps needing the prefix of "city car" is a car that is bound to fail. It is a compliance car through and though just like the Chevy Spark. Unlike the Mazda though, the Spark (at least in the US) has a starting price of ~15K and with an estimated MPG of 33 with a 9 gallon fuel tank you are easily looking at doing over 290 miles. EVs with such small ranges need to offer more, and this Mazda does not. I say this as an owner of a Mazda6 which I dearly love.

I like the look of the car but the range is just not enough because you know in cold weather when you have the heater lights and wipers on you are not going to get anywhere near that range I bet you would be lucky to see 100 mile then you would never drive it down to less than 20 miles left in the battery so in the real world in winter you have got a useable range of 80 mile. If it had about a180 to 200 mile range to start with it would be a better bet like the corsa or 208. Which for me are a better buy.

@@anydaynow01 my previous car has beam axle. It's perfectly fine when new but from the 2nd year onward when the dampers bushings etc becoming just a little softer the car feels like it has rear wheel steer.. except it has a mind of its own competely not predictable at all which way and by how much it's going to turn for you.. especially on bumpy bends. One time i hit a bump in mid corner and the rear literally "jump" (or steer?) violently nearly hitting the car next to me. That was a very scary moment. So I took the car back they checked and said everything is working properly.. Later i learn from the internet that the camber will change when you hit a bump and causing a "rear steer effect" that's why we have independant suspension (an evolution) and an less expensive solution, say to sports car double wishbone design, is multi link. Beam alxe on the other hand is just cost cutting to the max For an entry level city car (ICE), it's acceptable. Anything else imo is not. Should have listen to my father 😅😅 Oh and before i learn from the internet, i actually replaced the dampers just to see if that's the problem. It's Bilstein and it seems to solve everything and even improve both ride and handling. But only for a while before the rear start to steer by itself during bumpy corners 😂😂😂 don't get wrong i love that car but beam alxe no more.. had enough 😊

I like the look of the car but I don't think the payoff of fitting a small battery is big enough. 124 miles official range will translate to sub-100 in cold temperatures and/or faster road driving. This means frequent charging which apart from the inconvenience, would see potentially quicker degradation of the battery as it goes through more charge/discharge cycles than a larger battery would. I know the stats on the average journey distances and on paper this covers that, but I think Mazda haven't factored in range anxiety, inconvenience of frequent charging and the requirement for an alternative vehicle for journeys other than the daily commute and shopping trips. For me a real world 200 miles/300km (ish) is the point where I would stop worrying about range and it would become an alternative to ICE.

Imo the problem with this car is that it's got the luggage and interior space of a Vauxhall/Opel Adam in a CX-30 size package, it's ridiculous waste of space. Mazda could've just shoved a battery in a CX-30 since this is based off that, but instead they decided to make it a useless compliance car.

Interesting the Mazda and the Mini reduce the battery size to make them better priced, then bump the price up, In Aus, mini $60k , the leaf $50k, the MG $44k, Ioniq $48k and this mazda will be about $50k. So did limiting range really lower the price ? The Ioniq has a larger range and it the same price, the MG has larger range and cheaper.

I do like the fit and finish of the Mazda though, especially the interior, it's like they used the battery cost savings and placed it in the area where we would really appreciate the money spent.

Hello guys, I share with you my experience after 3 months driving a MX30, which is absolutely a very gorgeous car, inside-out with outstanding finishing quality and very comfortable and pleasant to drive. BUT WHAT A SHAME!!! Technically as an EV, MX30 is useless! When the temperature drops to freezing point or even near, driving range on the highway drops to 110KM (140KM off highway) and worst is the charging time, it takes over 3 hours (in cold weather) to recharge the battery on a CCS 50KW/h charging station and not 45 minutes as announced by Mazda! You need to stop 3 hours at a fast charging station to be able to drive less than one hour!

So the range is rubbish and the suspension looks sort of collapsed! The rear door portholes were hilarious as is the synthesized noise.

it looks like Mazda rushed this out the door, while it should have been a hybrid. As a hybrid with such a relatively large battery, it would be really competitive.

@@mikligardur9104 i ditched this idea when I test drove the car. Due to reverse opening doors, it was awful. Like, getting baby seat out when park next to other cars is just not possible. I had to pull it out the seat with my 4mo baby and hand it over to my wife, while lifting it over the roof. What an absolute garbage. Went with other EV-only car 12 months ago, really happy with my choice.

Its good looking car but why does EV car need to be so long front end knowing where battery is located and no engine under the bonnet. My criticism would be we don't need the cork and freestyle doors with tiny window that cannot open. Anyway this car is getting rotary range extender engine that increases range to 375 miles.

Because it does come with an engine in other markets. It’s available with a 2.0l 4-cyl engine in Japan and will eventually be available with a rotary engine acting as a range extender.

I did a 24 hour test drive in one last week and loved it. It's so much bigger than the Honda or mini which considering I have two kids and a dog they just don't fit. The Mazda is ugly but beautiful and I really like it inside. It was great to drive and I liked the fake noise. And there is no way j would have a Nissan leaf which is butt ugly inside and out over this. So it's actually very cheap

I don’t think this would make as great of a city car as expected; with such a low range unless you have a driveway (not likely if you live in the city) or at work charging then you’ll need to charge much more frequently than a 200 mile car (especially after leaving a de rigueur 20 mile reserve). So the key question is how fast it can charge on DC?

I love my CX-30 and, before that, my CX-5 so I have really been looking forward to Mazda's first electric offering but this is a huge disappointment. The rear doors and seating are completely impractical, the performance is underwhelming but the range is completely inadequate. It's all very well having a regular daily round trip of 30-60 miles but you need more in the 'tank' for those unexpected extra journeys and emergencies when you just don't have time to sit for half an hour while you top up the battery. It's a shame - wasted opportunity. Come on, Mazda; you can do better than this!

I just traded in my Alfa Romeo Mito for one of these and the car should delivered next week, I would say that the frunk is a missed opportunity with the amount of empty space in the engine bay. I do know their are a tune of CSS chargers on my way to Dublin and back home and as I would drive about 92km a day there and back so this would be a fine upgrade to the Mito. one thing I will say, the Mito cost me €30 to €35 a week on a full tank (Diesel), this car is 35KW and I have found that the most expensive CSS charger is 23c per KW so I am not sure if I am saving a huge amount. But here in Ireland I can get almost anywhere within 2 charges so I can complain its only 30 min watch 3 KZfaq videos.
