What kind of bonkers science took Electric Vehicles from quirky novelty to racetrack hero? How did the internal combustion motor not only kill the electric car, but also make it absolutely amazing? What is the true origin of the electric car, and what does it have to do with a modern electric car that recently broke the world record for drifting? Turn on, tune in, and plug in… it’s an are-we-past-using-gas edition of Past Gas… the history of EVs!

I remember when I first saw a t-zero. That thing was freaking TINY. It was so small it had an even smaller trailer for a trunk that the driver stored his groceries in. Also the car did come in 15 inch te37s in white. Super cool little machine. I had no idea it was that expensive.

Loved the episode, learned a bit about some EVs I'd never heard of. P.S. The Taycan wagon isn't a shooting brake, it's a wagon lol. Shooting brakes have 2 side doors, wagons have 4, that specific detail is what sets them apart.

@@Reaper0700 it's probably because shooting brake sounds sporty, whereas people see a wagon as a heavy family hauler. Idk why they're OK saying "sport sedan" but not "sport wagon," but oh well lol.

Wow, is Nolan the only one without a bias opinion here? (Agree, the Grand Turismo is totally hot) ... Honda Clarity was a compliance car, like the Volt and all other lame EV conversions created simply to Dodge (lol rip) emission standards... Nolan, maybe it's time you do a podcast on the future of cars. Call it the "we are past-gas" podcast ;). (that one is free) subscribers are dying for EV podcasts.

The tech Tesla currently uses for the standard Model 3 is a Lithium-iron-phosphate battery. It's advantages are: it's cheaper, lasts more cycles (Estimated 2 million miles), can't ignite itself, and doesn't contain any cobalt (it's debatable if that's an advantage, since boycotting cobalt for cars only won't help cobalt miners). It's disadvantages are: higher weight, a relatively flat voltage curve over the course of a discharge cycle reducing precision in range predictions and they are more sensitive to cold temperatures. The hottest thing to come in battery tech is CATLs sodium-ion cells and a Li-Ion cell technology from Varta in Germany but they're pretty secretive about the tech making their marvelous claims possible.

PPS: When speaking of range in these vehicles, please properly consider the typical daily travel distance of a horse, ox, cow, mule, or team thereof. Seventy miles is A LOT w/o feed, water, and rest.
