So glad to see you show some love for Randy Newman. He has been one of my favorite artists for years and I can’t tell you how much I love Sail Away. Friends and other music folks I run into often overlook Randy but I think he’s up there with all the best American songwriters. There’s a reason why Dylan once said something along the lines of “Randy is in another league” and went on to praise him as one of Dylan’s favorite songwriters.

I found your channel, while scrolling through KZfaq viewing suggestions. Since then I’ve subscribed and have watched all of your recent uploads and many from your archive. You have been very influential in my music purchase of late, discovering many artists I was not overly familiar with. My music tastes are very similar to yours. The sixties and seventies are still my favourites, as that’s my generation. Seven years ago my wife’s cancer returned after 27 years of remission. We made the decision to sell our house and move to an apartment. I donated my vinyl and CD collections along with my stereo equipment to the Sally Ann due to lack of space in the apartment, and more importantly, my priorities at the time had changed drastically. After my wife’s passing, six years ago, I decided to get back into music and replaced my stereo system and began the process of reacquiring as much of my music as possible. Because of space, I’m sticking to CDs, which I don’t regret. Up to now I’ve been able to replace about a thousand and the search continues. So many are out of print and are very rare, and if can be found are just too expensive. Anyway, I really just wanted to thank you for your videos, and I look forward more to come.

Nice surprise to see « The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society » in your selection, an album that I discovered when I was well in my 40s. I would almost solely listen to that album for a couple of weeks at the time. Admittedly I haven’t listened to it for a long time now, however, I warmly recommend it.

Excellent video tackling such a complex topic. You nailed it, unsurprisingly. I adore Revolver, The Boatman’s Call, and Blonde On Blonde. They would all find places in my top 100. From there Hounds of Love is a masterpiece, and I only heard Sail Away for the first time recently but you’re right that it’s an amazing record. My top ten as of today would be 1.) Stevie Wonder- Songs in the Key of Life 2.) Bruce Springsteen- Born To Run 3.) Kendrick Lamar- To Pimp a Butterfly 4.) The Beatles- Abbey Road 5.) Metallica- Master of Puppets 6.) Soundgarden- Superunknown 7.) Madvillain- Madvillainy 8.) John Coltrane- A Love Supreme 9.) Genesis- Foxtrot 10.) Tool- Ænima Highly Honorable Mentions to Dream Theater- Scenes From A Memory David Bowie- Ziggy Stardust Rush- Permanent Waves Iron Maiden- Powerslave Yes- Close to the Edge

100 percent on your Beatles comments. The teachers of our lives... and the leader for those who followed record after record. Nice list. I wish I had a top ten I could live with w/o editing every 5 years. In The Court of the Crimson King is my number one. My Beatles always changes. Right now its the rawness of Let It Be. Great taste. Very centered in the 60's but absolutley excellent. I'm younger than you (56) and having been influenced by the 60's in my early years of music listener, I was, obviously a child of my own music era, the late 70's, 80's and, as a college student the late 80's and the 90's. In all this refered decades you can find also beautiful, innovative and groundbreaking gems. Yes you refered Beck ("Sea Change" , what a amazing album as you said) and Kate Bush ("Hounds of Love" , again out of this World, like all the others you referred) but I still feel like there is something missing. Thank you very much anyway. 👍👍👍👍👍

Thank you. I find people hype up albums as great but when you do a top 10, 20, 50 etc off all time, you know the albums are loved deeply. I was delighted you picked Saint Dominic's Preview. Its my favourite Van Morrison album as well. Here is my top of today, the number doesnt necessarily denote the order but helps me to keep track of the number of albums 1 A Trick of the Tail - Genesis 2 Selling England By The Pound - Genesis 3 Saint Dominic's Preview - Van Morrison 4 Whos Next - The Who 5 Forbidden Songs Of The Dying West - Jackie Leven 6 Wildfire - Elles Bailey 7 A New World Record - Electric Light Orchestra 8 Crime Of The Century - Supertramp 9 The Royal Scam - Steely Dan 10 - Layla abd Other Assorted Love Songs - Derek and the Dominos My bonus is my favourite album thats new to me this year, Living Fossils by William Grey, an Argentinian progressive rock band. I'm sure im going to realise that I've missed an essential album as soon as i send this. It doesn't feel right leaving out David Bowie, Roxy Music, The Beatles, Jim Hunter, Al Stewart and Jess Roden.

I think your list is fabulous. Many of those records would make my top 10, including Blonde on Blonde 5th Dimension, Revolver, Hounds of Love, and maybe 1 or 2 more. Naturally, I would put a couple different titles in my top 10, but who wouldn't? One point you make that really hits home with me is the fact that when the Beatles made Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt, Peppers, there was nothing like that ever made before. I think that fact is lost on people who weren't there. No offense to anyone and bless them for continuing to recognize and buy Beatles music, but if you weren't there the impact of "Beatlemania" (what a horrendous term) is missing. I was 13-14 years old, and I can remember the wonder of it all. Just the joy of discovery. Really enjoy your channel, Mazzy, thanks!

I'm with you on 'Tommy' and 'The Kinks Are TVGPS' - in fact, the latter is my favourite album of all. I too would add 'Arthur', 'Something Else', 'Face to Face' and 'Lola vs P&TM' as an indispensable collection. My other indispensable collection would be Eno's first 4 vocal albums! Others would include Fleetwood Mac 'Then Play On', Procol Harum's 'Broken Barricades', 'Led Zep II', Sparks' 'Kimono My House', a Canadian prog band FM and their 'Black Noise' lp, CCR's 'Cosmo's Factory' and Pat Metheny/Lyle Mays 'As Falls Wichita...'. I know you omitted Jazz which does leave out Miles' 'Kind of Blue' for me but the Metheny/Mays album is close enough to Prog so I'm including it. :) I understand the Beatles' sentiments and choice of 'Revolver'. Mine would be my UK 2nd press of 'Abbey Road' ('Revolver' would be next) but for sure, their catalogue is a treasure trove of amazing, ground-breaking music. @@mikeymutual5489 It is true that Gene was the prominent and most prolific writer on the first two albums. McGuinn actually wrote a number of songs with Gene such as "You Showed Me." from early on. It simply is not true that they just started writing after Gene left. Gene was great but so was McGuinn, Crosby & Hillman. This was a fantastic musical journey, and I enjoyed every moment- thank you. You and my older brother (he's since passed) were the same age. I'll never forget when he rode his bicycle in a rain storm to buy Revolver when it came out, and we sat in his room and listened to it non-stop. I also had older cousins who were a few years older than he was, and they always brought their latest rock records over to our house. "Are You Experienced" "Steppenwolf" "Sgt. Pepper" "Rubber Soul". Records by the Rolling Stones, The Who, Lovin' Spoonful and Cream were often being played up in my brothers room on his Sears phonograph. Those feelings and emotions have never left me, and is why I am still collecting and enjoying records more than 50+ years later.

I enjoyed your comment, and I had to check to see if it was one of my younger brothers posting it! Just kidding, as I'm still here, but being the same age as Mazzy and therefore, the same age as your older brother, I was also the one who first started buying the records, albeit 45s at first. My 3 younger brothers were the ones who would - as one confessed some years ago - come into my room while I was away and play my records. In hindsight, I try to confirm my "badass" credentials by telling people that the first album I bought was "In-a-Gadda-da-Vida" by Iron Butterfly. One of my brothers will then punch a hole in my balloon by saying that, before that, I was buying 45s by The Archies ("Sugar, Sugar")and the 1910 Fruitgum Company ("1, 2, 3 Redlight")! Ah well, we all have skeletons in our closet.

Admittedly I drifted away there for a bit, but a rainy day (along Lake Superior shore) has brought me back into the fold. Interesting list: A Kate Bush line, sampled by the Utah Saints, "I just know something good is going to happen" endeared me to her whole album. Ever heard the Mary Margaret O'Hara album "Miss America"? Nice over all presentation, too, Mazzy. The Beatles' butcher block cover on the wall deep in the shot endeared me to you as well. I stumbled upon a butcher block copy (mono) in a used record store in Dinkytown (U of M), in '70; I still have it. Anyway, as the Kinks might say: "Thank You For the Days." ...and the vid. It is her best album front-to-back by far. It's one of my favorite albums front to back of any album I've ever heard. It takes some of the crazier stuff from the earlier Kate Bush albums and makes it more melodic and listenable. I would say that some of the early Kate Bush albums are almost soundtracks to her dancing but the hounds of love is something better. It's an A-plus-plus album for

Revolver blew my mind on first listen. In 1980, I was aged 12 and my parents went out. I didn’t own much then and pulled out this black and white album. It was an original mono pressing I still own. I listened three times back to back. Just ridiculously good.

Great selection- I put most of those in my notes as I get overwhelmed at the record store and forget what I’m looking for. Now the tricky one- what are your 10 top songs, I recently discovered Kaleidoscope so The Sky Children is on my list at the moment. And I adore The Only Living Boy in NYC by Simon and Garfunkel. Edit- just found an original 1972 copy of Sail Away, German Press; it’s beautiful 😍 I like God’s Song the best.

Hi Norman, thanks for your video. Top 10 is definitely a challenge but couldn’t agree more on your comments on the Beatles. If you got tired of Revolver or Rubber Soul something must have gone terribly wrong in your life 😂No seriously those two and definitely Blonde on Blonde would be in my Top 10. But finally it is of course all about personal taste. Take care Chris

VERY engaging video about the List! I was enthralled by many of your "micro-commentaries"! Very **humane**, if that makes sense. I'll have to look at some of your other eps here now! Cheers!

Only following you for a short time, I was not surprised by many of these choices. But I saw an outlier, seemingly, in your choice of Sea Change. I suppose a 2002 album can represent "modern day" in comparison to all the others except Boatman's Call ('97). Sea Change does sound classic in a 60s-70s sense, with modern decorations dotted around it. Glad to hear you pronounce Ray Davies' name the way he says it! Entertaining post, thanks!

I was not fully atuned to Kate Bush, but this has led me there! THX for that. Your list is, of course, very subjective. This exercise is a massive undertaking. I agre with many of them (especially with now becoming awakened to Kate Bush), but I would volunteer a few others for consideration. At least as entrents for the top 25 L:Ps : Santana's Abraxis, Linda Ronstadt - Live at the Hollywood Bowl, CS& N' s 1st LP, Marc Cohn's 1st LP, Traveling Wilbury's 1st LP, and many others that take you into the top 100 LPs!! This is hard to do!

So many great albums from the mid 60s through the 80s. Really nice to see Randy Newman in there. I saw him performing a few ago with the cleveland orchestra. Before that it was probably in the 80s sometime with just his piano. You did mention Nilsson. What a great voice. He did an album of old classics. A little touch of smilsson in the night which is still one of my favorite albums. Just beautiful recording. The whole album experience was special. Buying the record store, getting home and stripping off the shrink wrap. Pulling album out of the sleeve and putting on the stereo. Then listening to whole album as we poured over the liner notes.

Totally agree with your take on “Revolver” and like you it is my favorite album. That said, I always gravitate to the American version. Knowing full well the UK version was what the Beatles intended, it’s just not the version I purchased in the 6th grade. The version that in ingrained in my psyche. A beauty and a curse associated with coming of age during that time was the inexplicable bond fans made with music and favorite artists. In the days before I was old enough to work, my music purchases were very selective. What I bought, I really wanted . What I really wanted I listened to relentlessly. You just can’t erase that and why would you? It’s why I still listen to “Revolver” with the same enthusiasm as when I was in the 6th grade.

Good idea on the "best" removal, musical taste is a subjective and personal thing, memories associated with music plays into it. When you have an open mind towards music it's freeing and allows you to experience it better. I had the Kate Bush album back then and played it often, others here are new to me but i will check them out.

I have long thought that an all-time top ten was impossible to generate. However, this July a good musical friend challenged me to produce the "impossible." After too much thought, here's what I came up with in chronological order: Dylan - Bringing it all Back Home (1965) Beatles - Revolver (1966) Love - Forever Changes (1967) Band - Music from Big Pink (1968) Hendrix - Electric Ladyland (1968) Van Morrison - Astral Weeks (1968) King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King (1969) Neil Young - Tonight's the Night (1975) Led Zeppelin - Presence (1976) Springsteen - Nebraska (1982)

Thanks for your opinions on your favourites. I would also list Randy Newman's Sail Away and Kate Bush Hounds of Love two of my favourites, but not in the top ten. For number one in my top ten would be Revolver by the Beatles. Others in my top ten would include Sly and The Family Stone 'Stand', Bob Dylans'Blood On The Tracks', Janis Ian's Breaking Silence, Mahavishnu Orchestra 'Inner Mountain Flame', Gordon Lightfoot Sundown, Carole King Tapestry', Bob Marley and The Wailers Natty Dread', Don McLean American Pie', The Rascals 'See' and Gal Costa 'Bem Bom. Runners up would be Joni Mitchell 'Blue' Weather Report 'Mysterious Traveller, The Beatles Sgt. Pepper, and my Under The Radar album. Although I didn't list any of my own albums in the top 10, my 'Run The Gauntlet' was considered #112 on a list(forgot the magazine) of all greatest albums.
