Thought I'd add this to clarify what some of the comments are saying about the BBC program. You are allowed 8 "works" or "pieces" of music. While this may mean 8 "tracks" if you are talking about pop music, with classical music, it could be 3 or 4 tracks per work. And, being allowed to select larger single works, e.g. you could take The Who's "Tommy" at 24 tracks or Handel's "Messiah" at 37 tracks. Each work would only count as one selection. Of course, when Procol Harum recorded live with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra (including Salty Dog and Conquistador in the two performances) one could argue that they were in a 'desert island'. Edmonton that is. But I tease my fellow Canadians in Northern Alberta. Great used record store in Edmonton. When you are playing Bill Evans, I'll be outside your palm hut listening.... Moving on to Miles, if we are celebrating Xmas on the desert island, my favorite Miles Davis CD is Live at the Plugged Nickel recorded over Christmas 1965... And for Christmas you could put the Nat King Cole Trio complete box under my palm tree. That looks like an awesome set. Luxury item? A fridge. You make expresso, I'll dole out the freezing cold coconut milk drinks. For a book? My MacBookPro. That way I can write my own book. And play your CDs.

Hi 👋 I like your hat and orange colored shirt. I'm in my mid sixties and have a collection of hats. I own a few Pork pie styled ones that were fashionable for men in the 1950s/ 60s. Sometimes i dress in a 1960s style with peg leg trousers and pointed toe shoes similar to winklepickers.

For them as don't know Desert island Discs invites guests to choose 8 songs ....that's single songs ....not freakin' box sets ...and asks them which single song they would choose if all the rest were lost .... this should be called Desert Island Boxsets.

Hi Mazzy, At the time Desert Island Discs (DID) was introduced the wind-up turntable was still a thing. So a disc (78rpm) could be played where there is no electrical power. I think a song, symphony or even an opera falls into the eligibility criteria along with an album. In many cases the music is chosen because of an association. I feel huge cd boxes of collected albums is not really in the spirit of DID. Sure, pick your favourite box sets but maybe under a different heading. I challenge you to pick your 10 favourite "pieces of music" as actual desert island discs.

Hi,Chris here. The other Chris at the Long Cut got the rules wrong and I have have reprimanded him severely for that ( ah! that wonderful English sense of irony). You obviously know your onions but I did think Roy Plomley would be turning in his grave at the amount of clobber you expect to take with you. And then I thought of your charm and his compliant nature and decided you two would have really liked each other. Favorite might be different then Deserted Island Disc. What you would want with Deserted is something that would be good to listen repeatedly over a long period of time. Something you hear a new thing in every time. Plus a wide variety in music types amongst discs.

Me again fantastic collections you have. I like Ella too, also Sarah Vaughans vocals. They were similar in vocal style. I loved Nina Simones singing the most. I think she was the greatest entertainer of all time. I know what you mean by dealing with depression. I've had the black dog bad at times in my life. I saw Miles Davis in concert in the 1980s, here in New Zealand. Good concert.

I have looked high and low for his song "Mares Eat Oats" and apparently it's been taken to Mars! I so loved singing along to this song as a kid. love desert island disc lists..and i think the island fever has gotten to you beczause i've never seen any lists that allow box sets..(ha)...but more power to you..i often think about a desert island list..i know i would bring leonard cohen's album 'thanks for the dance'... after that, a few spoken word albums (possibly including my own..just to remember...)..then a coltrane, a miles, a dylan..perhaps a lou reed, tracy chapman, john sebastian, rickie lee jones or a paul simon...round it off with some classical as well (it's tough to narrow down)..and for a book, probably one by conan doyle...and since coffee is a necessity, not a luxury, my bonus item would be something i could write with (an ipad or unlimited paper and pens.. something like that...).. then just hang with the monkey...and still wish you peace always..rocky

Jeez, when you said top "ten" discs I thought it was literally ten individual LPs or CDs. That crate has more discs than a lot of people own all together, lol.

It's actually supposed to be 8 tracks only. The island is just you with a book, bible, a luxury item and eight songs. This makes the choices more profound and considered. And you need to explain why you made the choices you did. Finally you are asked if you could take just one, which and why.

A lot of good chuckles from this video Mazzy; and extra points for mentioning that hallmark of American high culture, Gilligan's Island (twice!). I'm sure that Professor Roy Hinkley could invent a laser and other technology required to play CDs. On a side note, I kid glove my albums and CDs and they look like crap. You bash yours around with reckless abandon and they alll look pristine. I guess that's yet another enigma of this universe that I'll never understand.

It's called "island fever" and it happens when, no matter how nice the island, you start to go stir-crazy because of the small size of the island, not a lot to do, etc. I worked in larger countries of the Middle East for years, but for my colleagues working on the island of Bahrain, they used to get island fever every so often and had to fly out to somewhere else.

My friends and I do this and agree that no greatest hits allowed. Fun game - we did no more than 7 rock, 2 anything else and 1 guilty pleasure. Only the DJ knows each person's list. When a song comes on everyone has to guess whose list it comes from. Makes a good drinking game too.

From Radio Times website , 'the first music played was Chopin Etude in C minor, 'Yesterday' is the most requested Beatles track, and 'A Whiter Shade of Pale' was one of the discs chosen by Diana Mosley ( nee Diana Mitford) , so she was a Nazi sympathiser, but she had an ok taste in songs.

If we can bring movies i would go with the Thin Man collection 🙂

Good list - but I'd sub-out The Smith's for a box set of Van der Graaf Generator. Kinks box replaces Procol Harum. Italian band Banco del Mutuo Soccorso for Bill Evans. Pink Floyd box set instead of Aretha. And Stones box set instead of Miles.

While I am going to be critical - I probably would have went about this the same way too to be honest - but you did cheese it a big bit with CD Box Sets - in essence there is way more than 10 Albums and let's be real with these box sets you nearly have 100 albums to listen to.
