An hour of M Britt and HW talking guitars! What a day. I have my Kemper because of the passion Michael Britt expressed to me at local guitar shop in Nashville. Best guy ever. So kind. Now look at the Kemper.

I recently made the switch from Helix too. Used it exclusively for six years, a fantastic piece of gear. I have to say, I'm really enjoying the Kemper so far. It seemed a little limiting compared to Helix at first, but it's still pretty flexible.

The way I am is, I support those that are loyal to the product I own (Kemper). I understand that people have to make a living somehow, but I promote the guys who are putting 100% into the one product. MBritt is one of a handful of names that I can wholeheartedly recommend on the Kemper groups.

I fell asleep while I was watching this video with headphones on and then I had a dream that I was sitting at a table with Jonathan and Michael at Franklin's BBQ in Austin and I was totally engrossed in the conversation but couldn't get a world in edgewise! We were all in separate cars so when we walked back to our cars in the parking lot, I told Jonathan: "Why didn't you let me get a world in edgewise dude?" to which he responded "what are you talking about?" Then I woke up and realized that the reason I couldn't engage in the conversation was because I was asleep. Interestingly, when I woke up I watched the entire video and the conversation was identical to the conversation from my dream. This proves that when we are sleeping, our brain is still fully capable of processing audio signals with 100% accuracy.

So, hot take ahead 😅 I’m a 50 year old who has been teaching guitar since 1993. I run a private lesson program with 160 students. I’ve owned only tube amps in my entire life: a peavey ranger for a week and a Supro Delta King for a few months. I started in 89 with a gorilla amp, graduated to a Crate G40CXL after a few months and began gigging in the 90s with peavey trans tube amps with a GT-3 in front. In 04 I got into home recording and discovered plugins, using the original amplitube, izotope trash, and a behringer V-amp. However, my ears settled on POD Farm. When I began gigging again in 09, I was playing a POD X3 live direct to the board in my 80s/90s nostalgia band. I loved it. Im a guy who never played cranked amps live. Currently, I play a Helix and a GX-100……….and I love them. Now I also have worked music retail for 25 years so I DO know what you’re talking about regarding feel. But that’s not what’s natural to me……..at all. My ears and fingers find even the original POD Farm sounds to be excellent, being able to from glassy to driven with a POD Farm plexi. I guess, because I never experienced insanely loud glowing glass (where would I play a bassman that loud?!?), my ignorance makes me perfectly happy with a helix……and I love how it looks at my feet. It inspires me while on stage or in the studio because I guess I like pretty colors. I can’t be alone. Having never been spoiled by owning killer tube amps, even what your viewers would consider mediocre modelers feel like home to me. I’d much rather focus on making music, practicing musicianship, and touching peoples hearts with articulation and note choice than sweating over Kemper VS Fractal. Besides, your Helix presets are brilliant and I can’t fathom how it sounds in any way “less than”. Thanks for listening.

Speaking of inexpensive guitars, I recently purchased a Squier JazzMaster and it is a terrific guitar. It took me a bit to get it up to snuff. I had to work on the frets, there was a grounding issue and some other tweaks like bending the vibrato arm so it does not fall out or flop around. It is quite awesome now. Never in a million years did I ever consider buying a Squier dut to snobbery but I wanted a cheap JM style guitar and read good things (and lots of bad) about these. SW was blowing them out so I bought it having never played it. 1st time I have ever done that and on a guitar series I thought I would never buy. It stays in tune even after using the bar. That might be the biggest shocker to me. Hell I put it down for a week and picked it up from the stand and it was perfectly in tune.

It seems what we love about guitars, effects, and amps is their differences, not their similarities. Everyone is different, and gives our ears something new to stimulate musical ideas. So ultimately there's no limit to the gear we need. At least that's what I'm telling my wife!

@lonegtr
@lonegtr Жыл бұрын
I like RM as a librarian but as an editor or even having it connected when I'm profiling is just an unnecessary way for bad things to happen. To this day (and maybe because of the earlier bugginess of RM) I still prefer to build performances and profile on the machine without being connected. It's great as a librarian for moving files and creating backups and even fixing tags and so forth, but I'm pretty fast on the actual machine so I don't find it necessary for some stuff.

The Kemper is great, but the profiles are not as "full spectrum" as profiles with NAM, Tonex, or even the Quad Cortex. Wet/Dry/Wet is very simple with the Kemper. However, Kemper profiles suffer from loss in the high and low end compared to the other options. I loved my Kemper, but its profiles had an apparent mid-range push that dominated. The Tonex has the upper clarity and even voice in the bottom end that the Kemper profiles just don't have. It wasn't something that EQ could fix in my experience. The "information" in those frequencies just wasn't there in Kemper profiles. The null tests really bear this out.

This is what has me on the fence right now. I can’t decide if the MBritt and TJ profiles for Kemper are worth the trade off for the lesser fidelity.
@jwright8838
@jwright8838 Жыл бұрын
@@steel6322 In my opinion, the MBritt and TJ profiles are the best in the business. One of the ways I dealt with the mid-range bias of the Kemper was to place a low gain overdrive in front of the Kemper's input and that seemed to help a lot. The two that worked best for me was a blues breaker clone like a King of Tone or similar and a Timmy like pedal. Just before I traded my Kemper away, I was using an MXR Timmy with the gain between 10-11 O'Clock. I had the treble between 2 and 3 O'Clock (bass near flat). That seemed to improve any profile and "add-in" that upper crispness and low end that I felt were lacking.
@guitartoneSA
@guitartoneSA Жыл бұрын
If you mic up an amp and record it, then move the mic two inches and record it again, then do a NULL test comparing recording two to recording one, recording two will fail the NULL test if one is the reference....just because you moved the mic two inches. If TJ and Michael Profile the identical amp in their own studios, the Profiles will sound different. Why, they'll choose to setup the amps differently, they might use different mic's and position them differently. TJ might be tweaking the amp to sound cool in his studio, Michael might be tweaking the amp to push through the mix live when he plays with Lonestar. Same amp, two different tones, with different EQ. So all these NULL test KZfaqr "influencers" videos are kind of pointless in reality...in reality the Kemper sounds amazing in studio and especially live. Guitarists playing live on stadium tours aren't about to jump ship because of a NULL test.

@jwright8838
@jwright8838 Жыл бұрын
@@guitartoneSA I explained why I "jumped ship" as you put it and it has nothing to do with the null test. Please bother to read what I wrote. I had been struggling with the Kemper not having the high end crispness and the low end "oomph". I had a work around that I explained above. I also mentioned that the null tests support what I was hearing. Just go look at a test and you will see that the Kemper leaves off info in the highs and lows that other devices do not leave out.

Perhaps if I ever bite the bullet and upgrade my home computer... But seriously, I came to the Kemper as a player who spends most of my time on the road. The Kemper was an excellent means to an end and even after 10 years it does everything I need it to do and beautifully. That being said, the Kemper profiles have become a second job but my primary job is playing on the road and recording a couple times a year. Between those two jobs it doesn't leave a ton of time to learn a whole new architecture and system, especially one that is computer based and not something I could easily road test. I know there are many more computer based guys that live in that world who could do it better justice than me, probably. Not sure how NAM will translate to live performance and Tonex is stuck with Amplitube fx unless I want to create a whole board around it (which I don't). I hope you understand. Maybe some day I will have a newer computer and time to work on it.
