3 HP Briggs & Stratton
Starting a vintage Mc Lane Edger that has been sitting in the corner of my wood shop for about 11 years.
I am guessing this Edger was made in the early to mid 70s, this may be a lower end unit or has maybe had another Briggs put on because this unit has no cable throttle control up on the handle. If you have any information as to the year made and the throttle being on the Briggs please comment below .

Recently got mine at a thrift store for 15 bucks and am about to give it a try after cleaning out the tank and light sanding the magneto since I was getting no spark.

I just got one gifted by a friend and I'm restoring it as a project, they run about $700 brand new for a 2024 model and since that's a classic... I'd sell it for no less than $100. Restored might get you about $300 to a collector but that's just my guess tbh.

That is a quality machine that you buy once, and keep; not toss when it breaks or won't start in 2 seasons. Was/Is a quite expensive machine new, and is still made in the USA.

You can tell the age of the edger based on the numbers stamped on the engine casing. Newer models have slighlty different numbering system but the much older models (I have the 3 wheel version similar to yours) will have sets of numbers stamped in the metal casing similar to this: 8 0202 1677 01 8610100. The 8 0202 is the engine model no. (when looking up online you actually have to add a 0 in front of the engine number so are at least 6 digits; 8 0202 becomes model no. "080202"), 1677 01 is the type of motor and the first two numbers in the last sequence tells you the year made. In my case 86..... = manufactured in 1986. McClane edgers last a very long time and are work horses.

Did you notice that the gas tank is almost touching the exhaust and gets very hot? Seems like a pretty dangerous situation to me. I don't know how long mine had been sitting but I cleaned it up and it started with about 10 pulls. Like you I had to tinker with the choke a little to get it started. I used straight gas, no oil.

I was given a very similar McClane edger, had it stored under my house for over 20 years. All I did was put gas in it, and a few pulls later, it fired right up. Amazing! How much did you get for it?

I lived out in the country and no one bought it (even at $30) so when I moved I donated it to a local charity. Oh well, it was fun to work on. :)

Turn it upside down get the crud out of the tank (may have to rinse out the tank a few times with fresh Gas) change the oil, choke it and give her a few pulls, may just start right up. You would be surprised. Run it for a few minutes then check the oil again, you may have to change it again. After that run for 1/2 tank 3/4 speed. That should do it. Those Briggs motors are stout and don't gum up like a lot of other carb designs do. Good luck.

Yes, it is a very old Gates 2310, stretched and fraying. I have a new belt and foam filter coming. Thanks for watching...BB23

That’s how it’s supposed to be before as it stretches when you engage the blade.
Scary looking Mclane lawn edger machine, cheap but will it start and run?
