Age has become an issue for the 2024 election -- not just for presidential candidates, but also in Congress. Republican Senator Mitt Romney, 76, announced he will not be seeking re-election in 2024. He strongly urged President Biden and former president Trump also to step aside and make way for a new generation of leaders. Susan Glasser’s latest article for the New Yorker is called "The Twilight of Mitch McConnell and the Spectre of 2024." She joins Michel Martin.

Yep 65 just like the rest of us--meaning you cannot run for president post 57 yrs of age. We need our young people motivated because they can identify with the generation in office. As a captain for a major airline who was recently “forced” to retire at age 65 due to federal regulations, why was I subjected to age limits when the folks who enact these regulations are not subject to the same scrutiny? Am I considered a victim of “ageism” when I was clearly able to perform my job while being frequently monitored on both a medical and performance level?

The issue is that the young people clamoring for ageist policies forget that Gen X exists, and that it's also unfair to dismiss people in their 50s. And frankly, I'm not going to vote for someone bc she's "hot" and plays video games on Twitch with her cult followers, many of whom still live with their parents.

I just retired at age 62. I like to think that I am just a kid, but the reality us that even though my job has had me working with mostly younger people, I see that it is harder and harder to see things from their perspective. One of the reasons that I think people should retire is that the future belongs to the next generation. That being said, with the choices we have in the upcoming presidential election, the choice is between a statesman and a petulant child. Age is of minor consequence at this point in history.

Not to mention that the age issue is virtually the same for both Biden and Chump and of no practical difference. Biden’s experience has been a boon to the nation. It’s rather old fashion remembrance of what America is really all about, emphasizing that we should work together, sounds quaint, but it is what the nation needs to do. And coming from anybody younger than an old guy who remembers it would be kind of cynical. He can afford to be nice. His political skills have gotten more done than any president in my lifetime in the last 60 years, more done than any president since Roosevelt. It’s that kind of political skill we need here at home, working with this crazy Congress and internationally dealing with the threats that we face, we need a president with Biden’s experience in Congress to deal with all of this. He’s not too old. His mind is working great, he’s in good shape, and he’s getting the job done. Hopefully he’s mentoring people to come up. You know after him and do the job as well as he’s been doing it. Frankly, Harris is not a leader, and doesn’t have the ability to lead the nation. So we’re going to have to hope somebody else steps in as our nominee in 2028. But for now, any sensible person, including my kids, who are in their 20s, their friends, all recognize that Biden is doing an amazing job in the face of overwhelming odds. BIDEN WINS: • Inflation Reduction Act • CHIPS & Science Act • PACT Act for veterans • First major gun safety legislation in decades • Took out the leader of al Qaeda • Historic job growth • Historically low unemployment • Expanded the NATO alliance • American Rescue Plan led to fastest jobs recovery in history • Confirmation of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson • Rallied our allies in support of Ukraine • Once-in-a-generation infrastructure investments

RIGHT NOW, Age alone is NOT a big issue for our political leaders. Yes, Joe Biden IS the oldest president the US has ever had. But life expectancy has been going up, too! ALL Americans are living far longer than they were fifty or a hundred years ago. I'm 74 and MY generation is living FAR longer than ANY previous generation. Unfortunately, that's not going to last! My generation is likely the last long-lived generation in America today. Life expectancy has ALREADY reached it's peak. That's my generation, and Trump and Biden's generation. Now life expectancy is starting to drop again. Why is life expectancy going down? That's simple AND OBVIOUS! We live predominantly sedentary lives (couch potatoes). And the food we eat is mainly highly processed, low nutrition fast food loaded up with sugar, salt and fat. And our lives are more hectic and stressed than they've been for hundreds of years. Most people my age grew up eating three nutritious, well-cooked meals a day. We got LOADS of exercise as children. And NOBODY ate between meals. Plus, medical knowledge has improved dramatically. Saving us from heart attacks and cancer and other such diseases. That's why we're long-lived. But now kids grow up eating junk food and sitting on their butts. We have a pandemic of obesity. And it's increasing, not decreasing. So OF COURSE (despite all the improvements in medical care) the coming generations are unlikely to live nearly as long as Biden's generation.

It’s a problem all around including in local elections. It’s really upsetting that the middle age politicians don’t have a chance at all… people love to say how America is “free” some politicians have been “reigning” for 30 years+, seems more like a lighter version of a monarchy.

The gerontocracy is in local government too. Older people out vote younger people and participate more in local politics and pass laws to benefit themselves. One of the most significant issues is NIMBY zoning laws that prevent new homes from getting built in the name of preserving neighborhood character. A major effect is constricting home supply raising the home equity values of the older homeowners who voted for NIMBY laws. This locks younger people out of cities where many jobs are which will hurt the economy affecting us all.

I vote Dem. There are plenty of excellent Democrats (or independents) who would make a good POTUS. Let's primary Biden and let the voters decide the Democrat candidate, not the Democratic party. They made that mistake with Clinton; let's not repeat it.

Depending on the individual, a person with decades of experience whose personal commitment has been to genuinely helping others, promoting social and economic justice, connecting the many countries of Europe and of the East. The fact that this person is an elder includes these positive characteristics. Everything depends on the alternatives. At this stage, we need to get through this next election. We need to maintain the positive, forward movement in the direction of global comity, work toward reversing climate change, and helping to lessen the economic gap between the general population of the world and those few who hoard a lot. Joe Biden is a stepping stone, a bridge in a precarious time. We know that 4 more years of Pres. Biden will not hurt us, will only help us. Then it will be time for the younger generation to carry the work forward. Ancient wisdom advises caution and care in perilous times. Biden has those characteristics. To be old is not necessarily to be less able.

Our older leaders are not regulating tech companies at a federal level. This could be because they can’t understand it. So the regulations happen at a local level. This makes the rules different in every jurisdiction. This also leads to many court battles that smaller cities and smaller companies can’t afford. So only bigger cities and bigger companies that can afford court battles can act freely in the modern tech economy.

In primitive societies wise "elders" were revered in an advisory capacity using their life experiences to instruct younger members of the tribe. I don't believe that anyone could characterize Trump, Biden, or McConnell (or Feinstein, etc.) as being "wise". Machiavellian pragmatists yes, but certainly not wise.

According to a description of the book "Lenin's Brain and Other Tales from the Secret Soviet Archives": - The author also illuminates the true story behind the 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, telling how the ill-conceived incursion was ordered by a Politburo of aging and ill leaders who not be around to deal with the long-term consequences of their decision.

Excellent discussion. Age in and of itself does not mean someone is disabled or lesser abled. It’s more important to look at and measure someone’s mental and cognitive capacities irrespective of age. With age comes wisdom and clarity of decision making so let’s discuss things on this basis in moving forward. Ps Mitch is experiencing # Tia’s Time for Mitch to retire based on this not age. I'm 67, and while I don't think age is the biggest problem in US politics, I think both Biden and Trump are in no fit state to be president, which is known to be a highly stressful position (at least if you're doing it right.) Even though I don't like most of these politicians (in either party) they probably have quite a bit to offer as advisors to presidents (and others), but these high-powered positions need vigorous people with stamina and quick wits.

Billionaires have quashed the younger talent through both the DNC and the GOP! It's just not in their best interest to let the younger generation (those most concerned by these issues) an opportunity to arrest these problems contributing to the demise of our democracy: The effects of an SEC with no teeth, The proliferation of corporate, carbon cryptocracies responsible for global warming, the defunding of the IRS (ability to prosecute these criminals) would be very bad for the status quo.
