This tractor, like many of this era (1930s and earlier), has a manual spark advancement lever. If everything is put together properly and the spark is set to "retarded", the magneto will only fire after top dead center to ensure the engine will only rotate forward. If the spark is advanced, which is possible if the operator is not paying attention or the magneto is incorrectly aligned, it will kick back and cause harm as you say.

Great find, I've seen 10-20 motors used in graders before, you might be able to find references online. There aren't any shops I know that do rebuilds, but I did purchase a new fan belt and carburetor parts from a company called The Fordson House. Cheers

I don't know when the front choke came about. Aside from serial numbers, I've dated them by the style of shift lever (early ones had a knob on top instead of straight stick) and whether or not the McCormick logo is cast into the rad or added with an aluminum tag (later ones). Cheers from Canada

@@castironmachines figures put mine was 1938. Aluminium mccormick deering plate on radiator front. One throttle lever.. just a right angled rod fir a handle. Turn it down to the right to go up or down.

@@stormunitleader40 Funny, I have the double rod with spark and throttle control. Twisting to the right advances spark and speeds up the engine too.

That is true, the old hose had been burnt from the heat of the manifold and began to fall apart, so I removed it. I'd like to find original front wheels for it some day

I appreciate it Chrissy but there is no reason for the engine to back-fire with everything set as it is supposed to be. As they wear and tolerances change, it will need to be re-timed to make sure the spark adjustment lever is still accurate. I suppose that I might as well be on the safe side and crank it as you and Darrell mention, but I have confidence in my adjustments. Looking forward to your vid, cheers
