Fixing a MAC 3516 Chainsaw. Full teardown and reassemble with handmade studs.
Skip to 10:00 if you just want to see the studs.
Please note, although it makes cleaning easier, you actually do not have to remove the clutch side black plastic case.

Thanks for the kind comments. I try to get all the important points in, warts and all. Videoing and editing a tedious job like this makes the job take much longer than it should but words like yours make it totally worth it. If I can help someone out down the road, that's what it is all about. If you haven't already, consider subscribing and/or a thumbs up. I have lots planned in the future. All the best!

This has to be one of the best how-to videos ever. You didn't spend 10 minutes describing your favorite screwdriver, you didn't point at the pull cord and say "hey this is a pull cord". You ran into the same annoyances we all will or have. Oddly enough I have a 3200 someone gave me. So this helps a shit ton. Good job.

Top post sir. I have a Mac 3200 that I got handed down from a neighbour, which looks to all intents and purposes the same but with a 32cc engine. Just hoping my bolts don't go that way. I live in Huntsville Alabama and if you live in the city you are allowed to place your old appliances on the side of the road and I found 2 mcullochs not at the same place but 2 days apart from one another,I had never heard of this brand of saw until finding these,one of them looked like this one except gray instead of yellow,and then one just like this one in the video,well the grey one needed a primer button,the yellow one was in rough shape,I replaced fuel lines,spark plug,carburetor rebuild and gaskets ,the biggest problem I had to overcome was the bar oil tank neck was busted and lid was missing,I got an old leaf blower gas tank and sawed both tanks in half and plastic welded them together and cut the original hole the bar oil tank neck came out of casing to make the new tank neck and lid fit, it looks pretty good , and last thing to fix is a broken stud for the bar, sorry for long rambling story but these saws are awesome and thanks for the video

Looks like my oil pickup has fallen into the oil tank - have to admit I walked away from it yesterday morning and the only reason it wasn't alight is the pool of oil wouldn't catch easily... I just picked up 2 Mac 3200,s and they are identical to the 3516 other than maybe piston size or carb?? Both my saws have a oil leak,,probally that oil line?? almost positive and a easy fix.(kinda) And both of them have the chain riding too far up on the clutch sprocket,just outside the grooves for the chain. Just like yours. Puts a small bind on the chain as the clutch goes around. I tried to shim the clutch assembly out so they grooves line up better but then the clutch binds up and spins with the engine. I think maybe a design flaw??? I have seen this same issue in many videos.

Great video even if it's over 2 years old I got a 3518 a couple weeks back that was a no start. After a close look the gas lines were broken after replacing them vooom voom a sweet running saw so I filled it with gas hoping to get some trimming done and gas running all over seems the gas tank is bad. So why am I telling you this because you showed me how to get to the gas tank. Plain and simple now to find a tank. 1 question however is it worth paying a shop to do the work I'm not at all good with small engines. Thanks a whole bunch and I mean that.

Sir, That was a terrific video and extremely informative. Thank you so much for that. I own one of those machines at this time, and my biggest problem with it at this time is a crack on the top of the oil tank. I'd like to try to fix it, but I need to get it out. Once you essentially split the case in half, you expose the oil tank. I your video, there comes a time when you reinsert the oil tank back in place. Is that so? Is it just held in there by tension?

Great job! love these saws (MS1435), have two fo them and use them over my stihl. mine are actually (38cc"s), weakness for sure is the worn out bar studs. I did replace 1 stud years ago with an NOS stud I paid $17.00 for on ebay. I now have to swap the other stud. picked up a pair of used studs and nuts for 10 bux (ebay). iirc, i was able to replace the stud once gas tank was out of the way, I dont believe I removed the clutch or that far/right sdie case? anyway, I am going to swap that stud and I will be able to refer to this video , I also will pay attn. to the oil lines to make sure all is good. @theeddies
@theeddies 5 жыл бұрын
You might be able to get it apart far enough to get ahold of the studs from behind, without taking the bar off. Or you could use a chisel or Dremel to break the nut.
@bryanroupe8646
@bryanroupe8646 5 жыл бұрын
I got tye furthest forward nut and stud off but failed on the rear. Thanks for the dremel idea I'll give that a go. It was pretty bad engineering making the insert or what ever its called for the splines on the stud out of plastic. After (if) I get the other out I'm going to slap gorilla glue ever where and slide them back in. Hopfullr that will hold them enough for me to tighten and in tighten the nuts. Idk what else to try.

@@bryanroupe8646 That is terrible engineering, the MAC had an aluminum boss off the crankcase that the bolts fit in. You might think about some really strong epoxy to fill, I have had pretty good luck with it just make sure everything is real clean. Best!
