Love this , seems like you all carry a decent selection of Japanese maple. For one, I understand completely your love for trees lol… kind of a fan of the flame thrower red bud… I’m coveting that as of late lol! We live around f burg va and we come to va beach… we’ll plan to stop by later this year!

I have success with Kousa dogwoods. I have difficulty with Crepe Myrtles and Japanese Maples. The myrtles don’t leaf out or blossom but only grow suckers. The Japanese Maples start to leaf then dry up and die, or they leaf at bottom snd top area are dead twigs. I live in zone 8 high desert, with clay and sandy loam mix; and I plant the myrtles in full sun, the Japanese Maples in various locations. Out of 7 only two are surviving. The first 4 were all on irrigation line 1 in dappled sun and shade. One green is surviving and healthy, about 6 feet tall. In containers I now have 3 of the comoact lacy style, located on west side of house, getting shade all morning, direct sun about 2 hours in afternoon and dappled sun in late day. They are not making it. What could be the problem with how I care for Myrtles and Japanese Mapkes?

Can’t wait to get out a clean up my tree. I’ve been reluctant to cut any of it but now I’m game! Have a question about the top- do you ever cut off the top blooms? Is that for a winter pruning?

On my Japanese Maple (either red dragon or dynamite) I have little white specs on the trunk close to limbs… is this scale or a form of white flies?

Hi Mary! It is most likely scale, usually cottony cushion scale. Use a dormant oil or horticultural oil to treat the issue.

I am so grateful for the wealth of information. I wonder if you could possibly speak a little slower, and enunciate a bit better. Sometimes it’s hard to get everything you’re saying. Otherwise, love your enthusiasm, and I LOVE trees also.

I am going to complain a bit here. As I watch more and more gardening videos, I am finding this true of all of them. No one is advising owners to find and map out water lines, septic tanks, lines, and field lines BEFORE you start to plan your garden, especially in choosing trees. Find out about any of your neighbor's as well. There are just not enough words of caution about trees that will put Herculean effort to seek out water. One of the first that comes to mind is the Weeping Willow. These trees will wreak havoc with water and septic lines. So you plant it away from your own problem prone areas only to see your neighbor having to dig up his/her yard in a few years because *your* tree has no idea about the concept of property lines. Then do your research on any prospective tree you are considering.
