@@Big_Johns I joke, but seriously, the guys that like McLane's are almost a cult. I admit they are tough as nails but if you ask a McLane guy about his edger he will happily explain in great detail how his is better than yours. They can cut through a bank vault, they can solve world hunger, they will be the first edger on Mars and if we sent them to the Ukraine army, the war would be over in time for lunch... 🤣🤣🤣

Hi Bill have a McLane Edger numbers and engine ID, 121602 0279 E2 0011208FB, have the same problem as you had. I installed a new diaphragm kit , cleaned out the jet and seat. Finally dropped the tank cleaned everything out , inspected the two tubes, good shape. Still have to put fuel to get it started. Once started, runs like a top. I’m stumped.

No worries, we have all put a carb on twice. If it's running good you have half the battle won so lets list what to check (in order) I am covering a lot of bases here because it's not easy when I can't hear it. 1)New gasket between the tank and carb? That could cause this for sure. 2) Did you note the number of turns on the jet screw? A minor change can cause hard starting. Get it running and adjust it until it sounds it's best and that should be good. 3) Are you 100% that the tubes didn't have any leaks at their respective connections? That would also make it hard to start. 4) When you removed the jet did you clean out the channels in the carb or just the jet screw? It's always a good idea to clean out the entire carb with carb cleaner or a ultrasonic cleaner. Mine came from Harbor Freight for ~$80 and works great.(no, they don't pay me or anything LOL) Let me know, I have a thing for old McLane's and want to know if it goes. I have more suggestions but I would start with these for sure.

@@GuysPlayingWithTools I have everything apart right now. I blew on the large tube and cover the opening, no leaks. The small tube did the same, no leaks. I have new tank gasket coming In tomorrow. I did count the new of turns but I really don’t know if the was the original problem, the owner did put gas down the carburetor to start it. Maybe he fooled around with it before? I just bought at a garage sale for $40.00. Yes I cleaned everything thing with carburetor cleaner twice and blew everything out with compress air. I will let know again haha, once I get it back together. The kit is coming in with a new needle and seat, I think I’m just to to install them.

@@antoniorivas558 Ok, one other thought. when you put the diaphragm in you used a new spring and retainer, right? I am not doubting your ability in any way but I am remote to you, so I have to say obvious things sometimes. The order the diaphragm parts go is (starting at the carb, going towards the plate) spring, aluminum retainer, gasket. The retainer(aluminum ring) only fits well on one end of the spring(decreasing radius spring) then the plate goes on gently and slowly, making sure nothing moves out of place. Let me know, I will help where I can

@@GuysPlayingWithTools Yes, I did put in new diaphragm spring, and retainer. I installed them just like what you stated. I will back to when , I have the other parts. Thanks so much

I was sure you did and I hated even asking but I had to since I can't see it myself. It really feels like a clogged jet or misaligned diaphragm from here.

Great video. What is the part number on the muffler?
@GuysPlayingWithTools
@GuysPlayingWithTools Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Oregon makes a really nice quiet muffler for this one that's only $8 or $9, #35-005 It's a bit thinner and longer than stock and easier to work with.

Do you happen to know the parts number for the whole carburator as a replacement.
@GuysPlayingWithTools
@GuysPlayingWithTools Жыл бұрын
I don't usually use the stock ones when I replace a whole carb, the aftermarket ones for these are pretty reliable and a lot cheaper(like 1/4 the price). If you get one aftermarket, you need to look for 3 things, the dip tube length and how the air filter attaches, the rest is pretty much identical.

If you just replace the diaphragm and clean the rest up, it's not expensive at all, under $10 for everything. Take pics and be gentle with the linkage

@allanmartinez1674 If it's been sitting a while,, drain the tank and check for rust, if it's clean enough, put fresh gas in and use starter fluid to give it a head start. If you get nothing with starter fluid, check the wiring. Picking one up that won't start can be a little intimidating if you don't work on them all the time, you can grab my email from my home page about area and send me a pic if you want to, I would be happy to walk you through all the steps I go through before spending any money on one I pick up.

Is this 2 cycle do I have to mix gas and oil
@GuysPlayingWithTools
@GuysPlayingWithTools Жыл бұрын
@allanmartinez1674 No, if it closely resembles the one in the video, it's a 4 stroke. The easy way to tell is to look for someplace to fill the oil. If you find anything, it's a 4 stroke. 👍
