Full WS pack has no A/C. I'm pretty sure it's gets hot in car on track. Panels also reduce weight on 918.

Motor Trend ran the 2 cars around Laguna Seca and the 918 was faster. The Gran Tour also ran the 2 plus a La Ferrari and the 918 was fastest around the track.

@@jeffwill4923 God I'm itching to reply to this 6 year old comment. Anyways No, it's not about the weight. It's about the aerodynamics. The wind flow will be disturbed when the roof is removed creating drag behind qnd in turn slowing it down

918 takes this, no problem at all. Considering the fact that 918 is so much more luxurious inside, instead of being completely bare and stripped out like the P1, it's better equipped, probably far more comfortable and refined on the road, far more usable in various weather conditions and on actual roads with bumps, surface changes and camber changes, and let's not mention infinitely more fuel efficient and green, it's a much better technical achievement than the P1, and I don't care whatever anyone says, that is a fact, if you don't agree, you're wrong. As far as the lap goes...even though it's pretty irrelevant, put the same sticky tires to the 918, and it will probably beat the P1 again. In any case....regardless of lap times.... we are talking about less power on the 918, much more weight, stock tires that the car comes with and are perfectly usable on the road, and it's road legal in the setup that was used for the lap. P1 is much lighter, more powerful, far less efficient, far more track focused overall, it had stickier tires than 918, they probably tweaked the setup in Mclaren to make it faster on this track before sending the new car, I bet you my both arms and both legs they did, AND the aerodynamic track setup on it is actually road ILLEGAL. So, the lap time, even the slower one, is done with a car that is technically unsuable on the road, which means it wont be as capable on the road as it is on the track (not that it needs to be, but still, a win for 918). Oh, and it's also more expensive than 918. So...how is it not a clear win for the 918?

Completely agree - also remember that due to the P1's regen system it's very likely that it's unable to make its max power go nearly as far as the 918, which was one of the reasons thrown around as to why McLaren were so shy about their Nurburgring lap time because it couldn't last full lap....I also wonder about 918's time with the roof up instead of down, must make a difference.

As much as I don't want to agree with you- you're absolutely right. I guess people already have this perception that based on the looks and all the weight saving measures; the P1 would easily destroy the 918 on the track but it's obvious that it doesn't.

kapquarfa I think the P1 is more capable, on this track the difference was this small because (like they mentioned) the track is pretty short, so the 4wd of the Porsche helps alot with traction and the Aero of the P1 doesn't really comes into effect. Don't understand me wrong, both are amazing cars.

A few weeks later McLaren came up with another P1 powered by a F-18 super hornet jet engine. It stombed the previous time by 40 seconds.

+overkonark u need to understand that we r not pro-driver and we won't ever get to drive these cars so...feeling what?? numbers speak out...style, engine engineering and lap timing...all what we can know, from what we can read and see on internet...and what we could see was that only the 918 and the Aventador SV pubblished their time, P1 didn't but simply claimed a below-7mins lap time...why not posting them? indeed it is proved it was slower than 918, despite what they claimed to be the fastest Hypercar...well they proved to be slow compared to the other Hypercar...about the feeling...how ever can I/you get to know that??

Race mode is not street legal, because the headlamps are to low... so its not legal to drive on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. So no official lap time. Easy...

The fair comparison ends at 11:46. After that it's just McLaren giving it another shot with much stickier times because they can't live with the 918 being faster. With the standart tires the cars are shipped with the 918 was fester even though his roof wasn't up. Massive achievement for the 918 because it's heavier and less powerfull.

On a circuit this slow, it'd make about as much difference as you spending 3 years at Oxford or Cambridge . It's the tyres, EVERYBODY knows the standard rubber on the Mclaren is like fitting it with crossplys compared to the Michelins.

@@mohammedmazin4675 No, I don't think so. The 918 has the cleverest hybrid system among the three. It has better power regeneration capability, better power delivery, And the 918 is the most effecient of the lot. Also it is the fastest while being heavier, and less powerful. So, i think the 918 has the best power unit.

918 is still the winner here. They drove the laptimes with the top off on the 918 but they shit themselves because of the p1's tires? Conspiracy theory: they wanted a british car on top of the leaderboard.

+TobRacer sure, that's why McLaren won't release a laptime of the P1 on the Nürburgring ;) Also if you see Chris' video, again, Ferrari and Mc had huge teams there which adjusted things on the cars and told him how to drive it. Porsche had pretty much one guy there. Had they given him proper instructions, the Porsche had won once again, Even considering that Portimao is a very fast track with many flat-out sections and almost no curves or complex turns where the 918's superior handling would come to great importance.

+TobRacer In addition, watch HYPER 5 by salomondrin. There they tested P1 vs 918 vs LaFerrari vs Veyron SS vs Huayra and (SPOILER ALERT) the 918 won both quarter mile and around the track while the P1 came 3rd in both categories :D

+Adrian Alfano You have to understand that these two excel in different categories. The longer a Drag Race goes on, the more the P1 outclasses the 918. However, around a track, you will rarely find one with enough high speed straights for the P1 to stand a chance if the 918 takes at least a tenth in every single corner. The 918 is a Track Car, which is why they often don't even bother optimizing it in such tests: They know its performance on its own will speak for itself. McLaren always seem to react to the 918, better tires, changes in pressure, reruns in better conditions, the P1 can beat a 918, but only at optimal conditions. Still, they say the P1 went around the Nürburgring in under 7 minutes, so on 420 seconds, it can't have been more than a second slower than the 918, which won't find a track it feels more at home. If I were McLaren, I'd release a 6:59 with pride, not fiddle for the last 2 seconds because you can't accept that your car isn't meant to go around corners at the same speed. After all, it is then again faster in a straight line.

Oh man that is a sad day for McLaren. Now I see why they are hiding their 'Ring time for sure. Twas slower than a car that is heavier, and less powerful and wasn't at all going for right out pace.

spineboy Pirelli Corsas and MPSC2 are hardly the same tires, Pirelli Trofeos are more comparable to MPSC2. Eventually Porsche will probably come back with better compound tires and this race will go on forever.

1) The P1 has a setting that makes it illegal on the road. Unfair to use it. 2) The Porsche wins, not the result you wanted obviously, so McLaren is allowed to have another go with factory support. How ridiculous is that? Did you give the same opportunity to Porsche? Extremely disappoiting by EVO. If you do a track battle, do an honest one.

Some that maybe true but at Leguna P1 wasn't a factory car like here. 918 was from Porsche.Till you show where 918 is faster on last strait then NISMO both LaFerrari and P1 are faster at Ring. Video is on here showing 918 dead heat with NISMO on last strait.Of course 918 was faster overall but top speed is where I'm referring to in this point. Maybe another video has surfaced. If so please provide it to me.

Why not a rematch? Both get sticky tires a little bit of tweaking for the track and a professional racing driver that is neither british nor german. And then do a lap with the P1 in race mode and one with street legal settings

The presenter said that even with some tire pressure adjusting, they could get a better time with the 918, but they didn't try it because it was already faster than the McLaren. Then McLaren just shows up with another car and new tires.

The 918 is using sticky tires. Evo didn't mention it, both are using R compound tires. The 918 uses pilot sport cup 2's from Michelin, and the P1 uses Trofeo R's from Pirelli. They're equally matched. The Trofeo R tires are optional on the P1, that's why they put it in parentheses. . . But what's interesting is that this 918 was using the performance package, which is also optional, yet evo didn't put that in parentheses. Seems a little biased to me.

Maxawe Some The 918 was only one second slower. How important is that one second. Both cars .went much faster then anyone should want to go so one second faster means nothing. There was no need .to see if it can go any faster It was fast enough.

918 WON.... Fairly obvious considering, it has more technology and traction. THE END The P1 just took the edge when it had different tires. Put race tires in the 918 and the story changes once again. I am a fan of the P1, but the 918 is a superior track vehicle.

Porsche has always been ahead of its time, back in the 80s when Porsche released the 959, it had so many technological advancements such as on-board damper adjustment, torque transfer and awd power it was truly a sports car that could be driven everyday, then Ferrari challenged it with the F40 which was in essence a race car for the road, striped interior, no features just a race car that is incredibly fast however impractical for the general public. Around the track and drag the 959 was still faster than the F40 despite the 959 being heavier and alightly less horsepower. My point is Porsche makes use of everything they have on the car and there is a reason why the Porsche 918 is the only manufacturer to release their Nurburgring time, breaking the 7 minute mark.

@@JesusistheliberatingKing The Pore he didn't have any special tires and was not track tweaked by engineers, nor did it come with any technical support or pressure adjustments as they admit in the video. Besides, the roof was off for Pete's sake. Now go check the 918's track times everywhere else -including on the Nurburgring- and you can see why McLaren gave up on trying to come up with lawyery sophistry and excuses and tacitly/quietly conceded.

maybe not 3tenths: you have to remember its a very slow track. It would maybe account for 0.15 seconds but i doubt anything over that. Either way still unproffessional and unnecessary.

Both P1's were prototypes/mules before being converted. Nothing special about either car. They have been in many reviews and tests. Mileage is much higher to the 918 because this issue.

To be honest, i prefer the P1. I just love that twin turbo v8 sound. And the looks are so... Otherworldly in a way... Like a concept car off the paper (kinda like the i8). Although I also like the 918 it just looks like a Boxster and a Carrera GT had a child. Both amazing works of art but if I were given a choice I'd be taking a P1 please.

P1 is futuristic, over the top, and somewhat ugly. 918 looks futuristic as well, but also sleek, curvy and elegant. Give me a 918 over P1 anyday :)

Nikorasu I think the main thing that kills the Mclaren for me (all Mclarens in fact) is how basic and boring the interiors are. The recently introduced a bespoke program so you can basically do w/e it is you want with the interior now, but that bland black interior.... Yuck. Nothing about it looks special. I have recently gotten over the "carbon fiber is cool" phase, just because it has exposed carbon all over doesn't mean it looks nice, or expensive. 918, Huayra, even LaFerrari with its stripped out look all manage to look head and shoulders better than the P1. And yeah the V8 sounds decent but on the interior where your gonna be driving it, you barely hear the V8, like he says, you get more of the turbo whine etc. On top of that, if you were to race a 918 spider over a period of 10 minutes you would eventually lose and be overtaken as the electric motors for the P1 can't even last a full lap at the nurburgring, let alone at a track day where you put in 10-20 laps.

There is nothing more painfull than to see P1 fans argue its faster than the 918 even though all the evidence pointing the other way. When they have to go so low as to pretend McLaren actually was faster than its arch rival the 918 around the ring, but for some mystical reason is the first auto company in history to wanna keep it secret by not revealing its time, well, then you know its full blown denial going on. I can understand it though, the P1 is the most hyped car in a decade, so it must be infuriating that the Porsche just quietly releases a better car.

I somehow don't think McLaren will be infuriated. They sold every single car for way over base price before the car was even launched. Porsche are offering a discount on the 918.

We have to be very honest with both cars. Porsche bench marked the P1 with all these updates and tuning. The Mclaren models in video have yet to see any major tuning since built. 918 started under 800hp when first developed. Now we at near P1 hp. Even LaFerrari was in development far longer the P1. Hopefully Porsche keeps pushing Mclaren to update this P1. If they do just another thing to argue about. Mclaren P1 GTR program will last for 2 years. So please expect something new from Mclaren on this normal P1. This Ring argument is endless. I can see why they aren't releasing their time. Knowing Porsche they'll tune a 918 to beat this time like Nissan. Mclaren did report a higher top end speed on last strait. Just on that note, How is 918 faster at the Ring??? I'm a huge mclaren fan but I know the porsh is faster mainly because of its four wheel drive and possibly better electric engine but I'd still have the P1 because it looks like a hyper car, don't get me wrong the porsh is amazing but it doesn't look extravagant enough for and as for the Ferrari I wouldn't touch and that's not the cars fault but the picky, babyish terrible people who run the company! They are the 3 best hybrid cars out there and the difference between the 3 is minimal so it comes down to preference! I bet just through Ferraris actions on a number of these types of videos and not just with there flag ship model they have lost respect and customers! Typical touchy silly Italians!!!

The Porsche is 140kg heavier, it has 30 or so less horsepower, it costs less then the P1. And it drove the lap with the roof off, so losing a bit of downforce there. The P1 is great don´t get me wrong about that but the car is good on a straight line and on track. That´s it. The Porsche is much more better. It sounds better, it has a proper interior and a nice one too, has a nearly 20 mile electric only range (P1: 7 miles) It´a better car on the road and not as jerky like the P1. It is nicer to drive, it accelerates from 0-100 km/h quicker, and it holds the Nurburgring record 6:57. McLaren are such babies for not telling the official lap times. But in summer there will be a new record around the Nurburgring. The Koenigsegg One:1 :)

Great points on all issues but I do disagree with some details. 918 is slightly heavier for several reasons. Regardless of what is said 918 isn't down on any power. The extra torque makes up for the claimed 140kg. Driver has panels off weight is slightly down. Full WS pack does remove the A/C and stereo which maybe model in video. HL mode puts it even with P1 easily. Race mode may have 918 less hp then P1 still torque is higher in either mode. P1 does need aftermarket tires on track. No diff with this kind of power can be difficult to control. Traction control/ESP does help but better tires are needed to get to the limits. This better talk is all subjective. 918 sounds very similar to 458/ Speciale. Interior should be better but seats positions aren't comfortable to most. Videos and some reviews say of too up right. 918 is 4WD so driving on road will be a little more balanced. Top Gear did say with computers off, 918 becomes a handful.

The 140kg is right if you take off roof panels. P1 and LaFerrari are much heavier then quoted. Both were are over 1497kg in the weights I saw from owners.In their basic specs 140kg is still a good quote.It just depends on how each is optioned. The weights of each will vary. The P1 Carbon is the lightest P1. The weight claim doesn't apply to it.The 140kg difference is the complete WS pack. Most have said 918 is the stiffest in most softest setting on street of the hybrids.In Top Gear review 918 did have issues in the hills with P1 and LaFerrari. 918 is the most well rounded of the 3 but isn't perfect on street. Top Gear and others have said the same of 918 without electronics. I have a very nice review to back this up. They've only built 1 or 2 of those cars, and are planning on 6 more. It is not a hybrid. the 918 is faster 0-60, and 0-200KPH by half a second. So, not really

it seems like Porsche just send reviewers the ordinary retail version and McLaren send them a track adjusted version. And if McLaren isn't satisfied with the result, they deliver an readjusted version.

Instead of understanding how McLaren has forced Porche to stay on its toes and on top of its game...and how McLaren considers the 918 to be the gold standard and what they are shooting for...they take sides and get divisive. Perhaps if Porche would have sent some support with the 918 they could change tires like McLaren did huh? Maybe next time these arrogant engineers will take McLaren more seriously because they will do whatever it takes to beat the 918. Competition is good. SO COMPETE PORCHE!

How so? It had corsas instead of trofeo r and it was a an abused car, the left bank of the engine wasn't even working that well, cup 2 alone are 0.5 to 1 second per minute of track, trofeo r are 0.8 to 1.3 seconds per minute. So that alone should give you the difference on ability.

in another 9 years when almost all new hypercars will be pure electric, AWD, nobody will think this. The P1 is the one that will continue holding or growing value as it ages, because it's the greatest driving experience of a "modern" hypercar that you can buy, and keeps the electrics as concealed from the experience as possible to put the V8 at the forefront. The 918 is so heavy and loaded with electrification that in another decade it's gonna seem pointless that it even has an internal combustion engine in the mix. If people want an electric hypercar, they'll have many options that will outperform the 918 and P1 considerably, but the P1 will still be the grail car for more.

I was wondering about this as well, not only a second lap with the roof on, but a third as well with the roof on and similar Trofeo tires. I mean if I owned one, I would probably drive and race with the roof off whenever possible, but I would love to see how the aerodynamics of the 918 are being affected with it off. Did they do this purposefully because McLaren was present and they knew it would slow down the 918 a bit? Makes you wonder.

fanofb44 Not true. Not even close. There's about a 2 sec difference on a 1.5 mi track. And the 918 Pilot cups are not even the ones you're thinking of. There eco tires. Plus, Evo cheated and purposeful held back their initial results (where the 918 was 1.5 secs after eventually) to help McLaren safe face.

Nick Linacre if that was the case McLaren would have put a new set of P Zero Corsas on the car, and not taken it back to the factory (not adjusting any of the suspension, I'm sure...) and fitted brand new Trofeo Rs onto it. Once again, McLaren weren't as quick as they thought they were going to be.

Nick Linacre Worn down? I highly doubt it, there is no way McLaren would give a car for testing on bad tires, especially the P1. I bet the tires only had a few KM on them. Also, isn't it a fact that slightly used tires perform better than brand new tires off the self? I love EVO and some of the other British car magazine companies, but they all seem to consistently give the P1 a slight advantage. Whether it be due to the fact that they simply want to favor a British made car, or the fact that they always allow McLaren to be present at testing, letting them to tinker with the car to get better results. Regardless, I absolutely love both cars. In fact, even though I'm a die hard Porsche fan, I am willing to say that I think the P1 is better looking car. If I could afford them I would buy both without hesitation, no need for a LaFerrari.

McLaren delivered another P1 an few weeks later. Why not the same P1 with other tires? Probably they did not just changed the tires, but also tuned the suspension and the engine of the other car to compete with the Porsche on the track.

918 > P1 ... Despite the 918 not having an insane 'track-only' setting like the P1, the 918 is clearly just as fast on track, if not faster than the P1 (Not to mention that it's fully road legal at it's optimum setting). And to hit the nail in the coffin, the 918 is heavier AND less powerful. Add to the mix better fuel efficiency. Basically, a much, much technologically superior car. Even more so, it is fitted with creature comforts. And last but not least, cheaper. Much cheaper. That doesn't necessarily say that the 918 will give me a 'better' visceral experience than the P1, but from an engineering standpoint, the boys at Stuttgart are clearly 'winning' this automotive game. A huge salute to all those involved at Porsche.

GaryDoctor1 Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2's are "sticky tires" both Pirelli Trofeos and MPSC2 are track oriented competition tires, so this was a fair comparison, definitely more fair than MPSC2 vs Pirelli Corsas.

CardiacAttack No. The Pilot Sport Cup 2 are the exact equivalent to the Pirelli Pzero corsa, the Trofeos are more hardcore and semi slick, and that's not the only problem, the P1 came in with several engineers for setting several set of tires more hours of track time.... where as the porsche came in with just it one set of tires and no one, and managed to beat the P1 without it ROOF!!! the Porsche is the superior car both on road and in track, , of course there would be tracks in which the P1 would be faster but not many

InitialDAmine Jethro specifically mentioned in the video that neither Porsche or McLaren came to the track with any engineers, multiple sets of tires, and they didn't spend hours lapping the car. Ferrari came with engineers, multiple sets of tires, a racing driver, and lapped the car for 2 days when they were testing the 458 Speciale. That is what Jethro was referring to. Pirelli Corsas are equivalent to the regular Pilot Sport Cups not Pilot Sport Cup 2s. Pilot Sport Cup 2s and Trofeos are both semi slick, dry weather, track oriented tires. The only reason McLaren decided to offer Trofeos is because their customers wanted them because the car was limited by the Corsas.

CardiacAttack Actually, the trofeo seems to be the grippier tire and by quite some margin... On the ferrari forums someone tried both and found the trofeos to be 1.5-2s faster on a 1min lap (ferrari 430 scuderia).

+Ali Franklin LOL,you maybe off on some of your comments but the heavyweight is so true. I see you haven't been around lately. In Chris Harris big test at Algarve the title went home to another car. Just recently the new ACR was faster on 2 tracks 918 had set laps record on. At Balocco last yr 918 couldn't top the lowly Huracan. 918 is a great car no one can't that, just claiming undisputed is really pushing it.

I know the 918 isnt as radical looking, but i like its looks better. Somehow the P1 looks like a Mazda supercar prototype or something. It looks a bit cheap (i'm talking strickly about design). And on top of that, the Porsche interior is top notch. They made it simple and light in weight, but it still looks like a proper, expensive interior..

Ferrari already convincingly won the Top Gear comparison last week with all three journalists selecting it over the other 2. Why don't they settle the track battle as well? The 458 Speciale humiliated the more powerful 650s when Autocar raced them so there is a change that the LaF will win over the P1 as well. Come on Ferrari, don't be a wuss!

Ferrari won it convincingly for "driving pleasure" They said themselves that it doesn't feel as fast as the 918 or the P1. It's a 789hp V12, no duh it's more exciting. What we want to know, is its speed and Ferrari never let people in on that

Phil Lam Doesn't feel as fast doesn't mean not as fast. They kept saying the same thing for Pagani's as well and they certainly are no slouch. It just means they are easier to drive. Ferrari won as a overall product and not just in driving pleasure or did you not read all three reviews properly? Also, around a track the LaF probably would be faster as it's electric power lasts the longest. Don't take my word for it, read Sutcliff's article over at Autocar.

I am not sure about any of that and that's wild assumptions. One thing I know quite certainly is that the 918 is faster than the P1 around Nurburgring. No wonder McLaren refused to unveil the official time. In fact, the average speed they claimed meant that they clocked 6:59 seconds, slower than the 918 by 2 seconds. Now, whatever excuse they give after this for not revealing the time doesn't cut it.

The 918 is half the price, double the tech probably with a much more hybrid powertrains, much more efficient, useable, all wheel drive and allwheel steering for all kinds of weather. It has recorded a record lap on the ring and has a much nicer interior than the p1.

The Mclaren name is respected for all it's racing success. But there is a world between winning F1 races and producing desirable road cars. And once again it shows they are beginners in producing road cars. It seems like performance is all they know and can. Just the fact that Mclaren keep using that turbo powered engine instead of NA engines shows they don't get the difference. And simply starting a 918 engine, and even more so a LaFerrari engine, is enough for most to prefer one of them over P1. Mclaren has build a race car (small highly turboed engine, huge diffusers and a giant wing) that you also can use on roads. The others made highly desirable sports cars that you also can use on track. All the Mclaren desirability is focused on performance while losing in all other areas. And lets be honest, if Ferrari had done something like Mclaren here, everybody would argue it's typical Ferrari to cheat and force journalists to get another chance with stickier tires and surly they turned up the power in their turbos also. But when all others do it, then it's just fair and normal.

Mclaren did look at a V10 and AMG V12 for this P1. Many are pushing for all the cleaner and greener cars. So a turbocharged power plant was deemed fit for this application. Mclaren still does work on the F1 BMW V12 engine but new emission standards prevent such a engine. Love this 918, problem here it sounds like a tuned 458. Regardless of how all feel, these 3 cars are total different which is good. It allows all to decide which favor fits their tastes. Yeah performance is probably Mclaren first focus. I mean look at the design, that tells it all. Their budget isn't the biggest so this 3.8l TT makes sense for short term. I'm glad someone finally pushed them to use this R tire. This same push in corner is also a issue with the 12c/650S at the limit.The Trofeo R would changed 12c like P1 in video. May not to be a huge change but still would help this understeer issue.

Tommy Fletcher Maybe, and it's a great car, but they kind of over did it. It's too much about lowering the car (so its even illegal for road use), extreme aero package so it can produce ridiculous amount of G -forces, downforce and so on. I can't see any buyer of these cars being almost as fit as F1 drivers to be able to handle such extremes. Yes it was supposed to be a super car and super fast but also a sports car. A super sports car. I think Mclaren went for a super race car. The other 2 actually look like sports cars but remove the headlights and Mclaren with that huge wing and diffusers looks more like a Le Mans race car with bigger total wing area than many Le Mans racers. I hope the next one will be a bit more about other areas and less about performance.

You do realize that many of the owners of these cars do intend to use it on a track? So giving them a F1 like car is perfectly in line with what McLaren is all about, the P1 had some big shoes to fill (the F1). Also, every P1 is already spoken for. The 918 still has open orders to fill. I love both cars, they are different animals for different uses. The 918 is the hybrid hypercar of the future with styling for today. The P1 is the hybrid hypercar that uses the technology as every petrolsexual desires, to torque fill a turbocharged engine, with the styling of the future. Porsche vs McLaren is like Ferrari vs Lamborghini, very different beasts and each has their day and flavor.

No proof of anything you claim. Just because the p1 was faster on these tires doesn't mean the 918 would be. McLaren actually offered both tire options from the factory. The other p1 was just lower spec

Porsche is king on the track. I laugh at these silly attempts of beating Porsche without cheating. Why haven't the other two challengers post a lap time at the ring? Porsche were the first in line to take on the ring without hesitation. That was 2 years ago. What are they waiting for? I guess, they realised 918 was too quick around the ring. Even if they manage to break the record it'll mean jack shit. Ferrari should stick to F1 and McLaren ought to compete with car companies like Koenigsegg.. Porsche operates on an entirely different level.

+Nick White its only faster on very tight tracks with lots of elevations etc that enable it to gain the grip adavntage of the RWD guys. Other than that the P1 has better downforce, better handling etc etc and speed but the 918 has the traction advantage especially exiting corners.

No roof, the P1 had extra sets of tires while the 918 had one, and the P1 in race mode is not street legal (and it still lost round 1). This leads me to believe that McLaren is all hype no show. Still waiting on the nurburgring time..

But I'll give you this though, with it's all wheel drive it can likely exit a corner faster, but if the track has a substantial straight, then the P1 will make up those few thousandths of a seconds with its ability to reach its top speed quicker. They're both wonderful, but I feel like the real enthusiast would like the P1 more. It's more attractive because of it's simplistic approach. RWD, not much to distract you in the interior, & just pure driver-focused bliss. It's not the "all-rounder", and for me that's a good thing! ... But, to each their own. Some like the 918 because it accomplishes more being the all-rounder, it's just not for me.

The most amazing thing about the P1 is that it actually uses the thinnest tires out of LaFerrari & 918. Although personally, I'd have the 918 as a car to drive on road, it just makes more sense. Which leaves the P1 as a track toy. Michelin Pilot Cup 2 are the stickiest tires Michelin makes, only make sense to have the P1 to be on Pirelli Trofeo Rs, which are also Pirelli's stickest road tyres. Camaro Z/28 uses Trofeo Rs, it's completely street legal. Those who think otherwise need to learn about tyres. Now all that's left is LaFerrari And then the insane One:1 or what I'm calling it, The Megawatt

So you're going to use the P1 in a non street legal race setting and special delivery tires after the fact to compete against the same 918 you buy from the showroom? Come on EVO. If you're going to compare them, compare them. Please... 918 wins hands down ! Not only is it faster in an apples to apples competition, it looks better, sounds better, way more comfortable and everyday usable, and cheaper.

swunt10 Although no time was released. Many say P1 Ring video is 1 on the best out. Car flying around landing like airplane. Drifting at over 1/2 throttle in a very tight turn. What more could you ask for??? Video on here of NISMO vs 918 shows our beloved Porsche even with a lesser car on the back strait. Of course the 918 had a faster time but seemed a little tired at the end. 918 all day, period. P1 is ugly. 918 sounds so much better. Motor trend has recorded 9.8 quarter mile times for both. Handling and braking are nearly dead even. LaFerrari is even uglier than the P1. Porsche is the only company with the guts to provide lap times.

Thanks to modern 1080p streaming capabilities, I've been constantly taking screenshots during the video. The videography is just sublime, no other word comes to mind, absolutely stunning beyond belief. Err the UTQG rating for the michelin PSC2 is 180. The P1 uses Trofeo R or Corsa which are rated at a much, much softer 60 or 80. Most people regard the MPSC2 as a less sticky tire, and the P1 has slower times with them. Besides - same tires, same driver, the 918 is faster than the P1 on the Grand Tour on Amazon.

Between the P1 and the 918, I just cannot decide. I prefer the P1 (because yes i am British and therefore a little biased, but i think it looks cooler). The 918 used in this has me confused a bit. With that Livery that it turned up in, and the fixed rear wing, it made me think that it wasn't the standard road car, so I'd rather know if it was before I make any Judgement about the P1's tyre change in the later stage of the video (I did at least check whether the Trofeo tyres were road legal, and interestingly they were according to "Tyre and Track" where they specifically use the word "Streetable" in their description). As far as I can tell, though from watching multiple videos about theses two cars, it seems that the 918 accelerates faster but the P1 has more power and is lighter so it accelerates more consistently to it's top speed. The 4 wheel drive on the 918 means it launches faster and helps its cornering speed, where the P1 relies on it's aerodynamics and tyres to turn in to the best of its ability. So the comparison seems to depict that Porsche have used pure, clever mechanical engineering to make this car quick, but Mclaren seem to have done more homework on the aero to make P1 more planted. I've read the argument that the P1 using its track mode witch is Illegal on the road is unfair, personally I'm not so sure, simply because a track was exactly where they were testing the car, It's not far off of claiming that because the 918 has regenerative braking that it was unfair to the P1. Besides the real comparison is mostly where they will be used everyday... on normal roads, and that's where I guess the 918 is possibly better with more creature comforts, which in my mind highlights that the P1 is more of a drivers car, it has less to distract, it's focussed on getting from A to B not all the detils in between, so really you just get in it and enjoy "IT" and the experience it offers, which is no bad thing. Like i said at the beginning of this, I just cannot decide... (if you read all of that, have a virtual High five!)

I doubt it will have a better value over time, simply because the number of cars are bugger (very important in that market) and it is cheaper than the P1. I do agree that it would be the better every-day car: Porsche simply makes the best compromises in regards to comfort, luxury and just plain out speed.

Erm, if Grand tour had the P1 losing to the 918 and LaFerrari, with Jeremy fucking Clarkson presenting, I don't think you can call bias of any other show. The Porsche arguably gained more in weight savings from removing the roof, than it lost in aero, on such a small and slow track. Worth saying, it's tracks like this where the 918 really excels anyway, low speed corners where the AWD can do its job best. The P1's race tyres were hardly cheating (they are standard for the car), just enough to let it put its power on the road better. All the Porsche fanboys complaining about a change of rubber when they have space-age traction control and AWD, I can taste the salt, that something as simple as a good set of Pirelli's beat all that tech.

The 918 has been my dream car since it's release. Useable as an everyday driver, won't kill you when it rains, won't land you with the tyre bill from hell if you were to take it to a track, and the timeless design will age far better than the La Ferrari or P1. In addition to what you said, Jethro said that the throttle response was better in the 918 and the 918 had the best twin clutch transmission he's ever driven. Since he drove the P1 the day before he drove the 918, I'm guessing that includes in the P1. Jethro also said that there was still more time to shed off of the 918 with the tires provided given that he had more seat time, which is something he didn't mention when he drove the P1 the first time. This means the 918 could potentially beat the P1's (Trofeo) lap time with just standard rubber. Not to mention less downforce, less horsepower, higher center of gravity, and more weight. The 918 shares many of the technologies found in 919 LMP car, so it's built to endure. It's no surprise, then, that the 918 can consistently perform during the entire duration of the Nurburgring lap, while McLaren is still shy in publishing their lap time for the P1. Even if the cars were equal in performance, I'd still pick the 918 because the interior matches the money you bought it for, and that Martini livery is just gorgeous. It's also more special than the P1 because unlike the P1, which was essentially built on top of the 12c, the 918 was completely built from the ground up.

The open roof should actually slow it down due to aerodynamic issues the 918 is really just faster, it even lapped the nurbürg ring in 6:57

Nice to read the comments here (well, almost all :)) but no roof and lesser tires can grant a second to the P1. How come the 918 is so fast even if it is way heavier ? Well, just check the torque figures ... :) . The P1 is great, but for me the 918 is the better car, most of the time also the fastest one. And funny again, the one with more soul. Did I mention the daily usability and the price?

OOOOOH!!!,national pride spoiled the video,british magazine couldnt let the porsche win so lets put on the mclaren better tires....how about put the roof on the porsche for better stifnes and aero and put the mclaren in road LEGAL mode,so you can compare two real ROAD CARS and not one for road and one for track but not legal for road...add to this same tires on both cars and i BET you that the porsch would be at least 3 seconds faster than mac.but both cars are impresive though...

Point is, the Porsche is actually better because:- It costs almost a million bucks less It's basically the same performer- 345 kph and acceleration figures of 2.6 seconds compared to p1's 350 kph and 2.8 seconds Looks better More responsive And guys, I know the p1 is cool and all, but you would opt for a similar performing car for less money given the choice. Be practical!

Ferrari are such bitches with their cars, they wont let you test their hypercar against these two, and they bring half the staff anytime anyone with influence test their car, not to mention they are almost always double the price of their competitors. The gt3 is just about as fast and cost about half the money as the speciale. Porsche is much more open with their cars, they state their ring time and they under rate their 0 to 60 times.

Rather than writing bullshit ask yourself why.. do you think that Ferrari has become what it is thanks to the Enzo Ferrari face??? Or maybe for the nice horse? Ferrari doesn't have to prove anything.. their history talk...their wins and firstly.. Ferrari CARS Who knows why when the real drivers (or real tester) try the Ferrari are always amazed.. are always better than the competitor (and when are not the best ..are however very close to the best). All paid by Ferrari right? Like when every british (not italian) magazine (Evo, Autocar, Fifth Gear..etc etc) compared the 458 vs 12c.. who win?

lazios Thats the point the ferrari race cars and ferrari press cars are completly different than the machines given to justin beiber that catch on fire. Which at the end of the day we all know that they get away with it because of who their buyers are anyways. Ferrari is shortly to be split from the Fiat group and the valuation on the company is abismal. Who win? lol

Pretty sure the Sport Cup 2 has a treadwear rating of 180 while Trofeo is rated at 60. Trofeo is much softer / stickier.

Both tires have slick areas in their designs. The only really difference is the R are softer not sticker.

Softer tires are generally stickier.. otherwise, there's no reason to run the softer tires since they wear out so much quicker. The treadwear comparison is not exact, but it means one roughly last 3x as long.. for comparison, a Pilot Super Sport has a treadwear rating of 300. A Hoosier R6 is rated at 40. At 60, that's pretty close to the Hoosier.

Let's look at the the Nitto NT01 and Toyo R888. Both are very similar in design but will last a little longer then this Pirelli R's. Both have a 100 tread rating. The NT05 is probably the best of both worlds. AS much grip as any R tire and out last pretty much any tire in it's class. The rating is based on what the factory says. These Trofeo R could be lower. I mean they have been rating the P 0 Corsa at 60 for yrs. The 80 rated Cups on the last Z06 would easily out grip them on track.

Jeffrey Williams I have ran the NT-01 at the track. As you said, it is rated at 100. And then you compared that to say Hoosier R6. The R6 has quite a bit more grip. I agree when they are within the range, the threadwear rating might not be the exact indication (say, compare something that's rated at 80 vs. 60, etc.) But when it is 180 vs. 60, I think it is safe to say that the one rated at 60 is stickier. I have not personally tried the Trefeo myself, bu I have tried the like of Pilot Sport 2 (220 rating), AD-08 (180 rating).. and those tires are basically high performance street tires. When using them at the track, there's really no comparison, when compared to the NT-01.. and then, the next step, the R6. The "Sport Cup 2" that's rated at 180 isn't really like the Sport Cup from before.. it is really just a high performance street tires.. not really a track tire. (Sure, you can use them on the track. But they are not track tires..)

Imagine slick tires, lowered, and with a roof. I guess that what the rs model should be to compete with P1 in which it would annihilate it. 918 was designed for a different purpose.

Yes the McLaren seems to be designed more for track use than the 918 but their main job is to be a road car. The 918 takes it by just a smudge in my opinion but I would take the P1 any day.
