Another one of the most common questions I get about life at McMurdo is how we live and what our housing situation looks like. Well, in this video, I shed some light on the different living situations at McMurdo and give you a tour of my room! Check it out!!

I am currently living and working at the South Pole Station through the United States Antarctic Program. I am not down here as a filmmaker or photographer, but instead work in the Logistics and Supply department. All of these videos are being made during my free time and not during working hours. We are very busy down here keeping the station running at maximum efficiency, but I have managed to find some free time to make these short movies!

Nice facilities! When I was there in possibly 1971 we stayed in a kind of a 50 ft by 10ft tent. It was not quiet and tough to catch up on sleep Worked in the mechanical shop. Interesting equipment to work on. I was over the battery shop.

I worked in the Galley 2nd cook was there almost 13 months from beginning of 92 till 93 !! For the summer we stayed in a kind of tent it was a big wooden half circle covered with thick canvas. We used canvas for walls to make our own rooms.

Do you have enough bandwidth to watch youtube videos, Hulu, or Netflix, while you reside at the pole? Even if it is for limited amount of hours?
@GoneVenturing
@GoneVenturing 5 жыл бұрын
So basically we get our internet by satellite here at the Pole and throughout the day, we get coverage for about 12 hours by three different satellites. One of them is pretty good (the one I do all my YT work on) and the other two aren't as good. The good one is good enough for YT videos, but sadly the other streaming services are blocked because they use too much bandwidth.

Is it common people make a career out of this lifestyle? If you work down there once, is it likely you'll get invited back? I imagine it can end suddenly say if one's health became an issue
@GoneVenturing
@GoneVenturing 4 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure what the percentage is, but a lot of people definitely come back. Making it a career and becoming a “lifer” is more rare. Some people just want the once in a lifetime experience, where some people, like me, love it and want to come back a few times! However, some people definitely do it for a long time! As long as you do well, you will often get invited back because they’d rather have someone they know is good than someone new. But yeah, like you said, it can get sketchy if something happens to your health. You need to do a medical before every contract and if you fail then you can’t come down. It’s a little bit of a risky lifestyle but people are willing to do it because it’s amazing ☺️

Sad, or amazing. We are as much natural inhabitants of the earth as polar bears are. Everyone that goes to the poles does so in an environmentally respectful manner and does their best to minimize their impact while conducting science that is beneficial to us all. The continent is so remote that it remains an unspoiled oasis for all kinds of life. Seabirds, penguins, seal lions, sea life of many kinds, it’s rich in biodiversity. The few hundred humans that are down there are far outnumbered by the millions of native species who will be there for millennia.
