Avery nice job on that kit Gary! I have always liked the lines of the HG3 since I first saw drawings and artists impressions of the proposed High Speed version in a Book about Luftwaafe Jet Projects. I knew it got as far as wind tunnel tests on scale models... so it did exist - Kind of. Personally I think it looks like a Standard Me 262A had its wicked way with a De Havilland Comet! ;-) My own kit is almost ready for paint and my 2nd HG3 kit justt arrived by post from China. (I did post some pics on Gary's Friends FB page of my half-built example - almost zero filler needed!)

Hi. Very nice result of a neat ,interesting kit. I'd just finished Dan Sharp's excellent 2022 book "Messerschmitt Me 262 Development and Politics" when you put out the review. Lots of pictures for the "what if" fans like Eugine Sanger's idea of attaching ramjets on top of the Jumos. And I found out that HG stands for "Hochgeschwindigkeitflugzeug" (high speed aircraft) which is quite the mouthful! Thank you for for all your work. Cheers Matt🦘🦘🦘

The biggest drawback would have been the engines which were higher up and buried in the wing making them harder to access than the existing 262 and so take longer to maintain and replace. This was a major factor in accepting designs and why many opposed the He162.

A really interesting aircraft and a neat model, Gary. 👍🏻 I’ve rechecked the instruction sheet but that gunsight looks like it sits very far into the cockpit interior to me, the way Amusing Hobby has done it. It looks like it would take off the pilot’s head if the jet came to a sudden stop. 😮 Research into this will be near impossible since the plane was never completely built, so I’ll probably sit the gunsight closer to the instrument panel for my build. 😅 Keep up the good work, mate. ❤️

Gary, I've seen this aircraft in Luftwaffe experimental aircraft books but had no idea there WAS A kit or have not seen Amusing Models in the colonies. You can tell the molding engineers put a lot of thought into the design of the kit, best assembling techniques I've seen. I can't help but see a little bit of the " Horten Brothers" influence in the design. Adolf Galland would have loved to have had many squadrons of this aircraft. . I had frozen my acquisition budget for 2024, however it looks like I'll have to break open the " piggy bank" and find this one. Displayed with a Me 262 would be epic. Thanks for sharing, Cheers, Bob

Problem is Bob, there are going to be two more at least, one with a 'V'-tail and one with the cockpit in the fin like the Lippisch ramjet fighter. Would be an interesting diorama - a fictional "Berlin Air Show" of 1946 with a range of these variants lined up...

Great job. I wonder if the fuselage mounted Jumo turbojets were more aerodynamic than the wing mounted ones on an Me-262...
@garys_stuff
@garys_stuff Ай бұрын
You do get rid of a lot of form drag by burying the engines, although there could be a small efficiency loss with longer inlets. Being so close to the fuselage they are not in "free stream" air but are affected by the flow around the fuselage. That said, they worked OK on the Comet/Nimrod, the Vulcan, Victor, etc., etc. I suspect that by the time it had flown there would have been a small fence between the inlet and the fuselage to counter any effect of this.
@user-vp6os5kj4t
@user-vp6os5kj4t Ай бұрын
Was it stable at low speeds? Alos don't forget that many pilots died because of the problems with the engines. Germany was far ahead in the use of jet engines, but had its problems. Focke Wulf Ta-183 become a flyable aircraft until the 1950's (Pulqui -Argentina). Too bad only Germany had so many plans for jets, I like making those plane as model kits . Great job, Gary ... I like the list of things you used for the kit
@garys_stuff
@garys_stuff Ай бұрын
I wouldn't have liked to try to land this - it would have been a bit fast and would probably have needed a drag chute because towards the end of the war the available airfields were relatively small. Likewise I suspect some external rocket assistance for take-off. Glad you like the paint & products list, I'll try to do this with all my builds in future.

I doubt it would have made a difference due to the fuel supply , it would then have met Allied jet fighters if it ever got airborne.
@garys_stuff
@garys_stuff Ай бұрын
Also I'm not sure what the increase in absolute speed would have been, the critical Mach number might have been slightly higher with the wing sweep but would it have had any kind of manoeuvrability? I suspect it was aimed at the kind of hit and run tactics of the Me163 etc. Fuel supply and lack of strategic materials were the death knell of these amazing designs.
@markfranks1329
@markfranks1329 Ай бұрын
Yes, a classic case of too little, too late. But, what a design! Had that got into the air, it might have indeed faced allied jet types but none of them would have been as advanced as this. Vampires, Meteors, F-80s and, um, P-59 Airacomets 🤭 - All possessing straight wing technology. Allied swept wings only came into existence post war with captured German technical data. The V-Bombers owe their existence to German aeronautical know how. Look at the air intakes of this Messerschmitt. Hmm, the Valiant, Victor and Vulcan not similar at all, are they? I reckon had this 262 variant and other similar German designs come into play in sufficient numbers and were flown by experienced pilots, it would have wiped the floor with anything the Allies had. Painful for some to swallow, I know. Just mo.

Nothing to say about the kit and Gary's build .... but there is a huge myth about the Me 262 series; it did not enter actual service until AFTER the Meteor. Also the Meteor held the WAS Record twice , in 1945 and 1946, the 262 never.
@garys_stuff
@garys_stuff Ай бұрын
Not sure that Germany was too bothered trying to capture the world air speed record by 1944/5... but with decent engines I think it likely the 262 could have been very fast indeed. The Meteor had a critical Mach number of about 0.82, pretty sure the 262 was higher. Winkle Brown thought the 262 one of the very best fighters of the war.
@uingaeoc3905
@uingaeoc3905 Ай бұрын
@@garys_stuff Gary, the Messerschmidt team would have been keen and salivating for some sort of 'absolute speed record' but did not even try because there were NO 'decent engines' . You may as well say 'a Sopwith Camel with a rocket could have ....". Winkle was full of superlatives - and other things to say, fact is the 262 had hardly ANY combat experience and so wa NOT the best fighter of the war, the Spitfire and Mustang were. .
@garys_stuff
@garys_stuff Ай бұрын
@@uingaeoc3905 Winkle very much admired the Mustang, and later the F-86. He was one of the best test pilots ever to fly and, as a combat pilot in the Fleet Air Arm, knew what he was talking about. And he flew the 262 from those perspectives. A Camel with rockets? Well the wings would fold so it wouldn't go fast. But whatever, we each have our opinions.
@ricardoroberto7054
@ricardoroberto7054 Ай бұрын
The me262 actually entered service shortly before the Meteor but it's academic because the main factor was the 262 saw proper combat duty whereas the meteors was very limited as the allied war effort was already centered around the piston fighter and they didnt want the momentum disrupted.
@uingaeoc3905
@uingaeoc3905 Ай бұрын
@ricardoroberto7054 That is incorrect. The 262 was distributed to squadrons but it did not see combat service until October 44 whereas the Meteors where in combat duties in June. The Meteor did not do intercepts in Europe, it did these over England on V1 chases, it then did ground attack sorties in Europe. that is 'proper combat duties'. The Axis was centred on piston fighter types overwhelmingly, look at the numbers, and the 262 was working up for months and only then used used in intercepts of the RAF and USAAF bombing raids. This is not 'academic'; check the timeline of service duties for both types.
