My brother is a former US Marine and he is unashamedly a huge fan of this movie. He thinks it is absolutely hilarious. Always has. Even if there is a certain demographic they were aiming for, they managed to make 20-something year old tough men huge fans of it as well. So your love of it is not weird. It’s a phenomenal movie. Loved hearing your laughter throughout.

I don’t think they were aiming for a broader demographic as the jokes are filled with nuances that only literates can understand. HOWEVER, a lot of people think that the jokes making fun of the ones who are saying it aren’t a criticism to society but actual real funny jokes. Like the redneck kids talking about “homosexuals.” Some might think “ha, homosexuals”, when the joke is on the people who think that way. And so on.

One thing I like visually is that in the three way phone call scene, Regina is on the left and Cady is on the right. Later, when Cady takes over as the queen bee, on the next phone call scene SHE is on the left and Regina on the right - also visually taking over her position.

regina thought Janis was lesbian because Janis said she was Lebanese & regina thought she said she was a lesbian 💀 this movie is so damn funny edit: JUST A THEORY BTW NOT A FACT
@baixiaolang
@baixiaolang 6 ай бұрын
There's that, and I don't think reactors react enough to Regina's story about their falling out. She says something like "like whenever I would blow her off to hang out with a guy she'd get upset with me and I'd be like why are you so obsessed with me?" So even in Regina's version of the story, Janis was only getting upset *because Regina was actively blowing her off,* which is basically a normal human reaction lol.
@m4tth3w967
@m4tth3w967 6 ай бұрын
I always see this comment and I'm not sure that's true. When Regina is talking about Janis to Catie, she says "Janis you can't come to my pool party cause I think you might be a lesbian". If Janis told Regina she was Lebanese and and Regina thought she was saying lesbian, then she wouldn't say "i think you might be a lesbian", she would say "you told me you were a lesbian".
@ceeeegeee
@ceeeegeee 6 ай бұрын
That's a fun fan theory, but it doesn't really make sense. Regina called her a lesbian because Janis was "obsessed" with her
@little7redify
@little7redify 6 ай бұрын
@@ceeeegeee To me it makes sense because why would they even include that moment in the movie where she tells the guy that she's Lebanese, it was totally unnecessary to the plot unless it was meant to be perceived as that joke. Plus Regina could've said "I think you might be a lesbian" after she heard it going around maybe Janice didn't tell it to her directly that she was Lebanese.
@moramorandobianchi7093
@moramorandobianchi7093 6 ай бұрын
Nah, that's speculation, the actual writer said it wasn't true. Regina thought Janis was a lesbian because of what she explains, the jealousy. They made Janis say she is lebanese to get her with Kevin as a joke, maybe they didn't realize it sounded similar? I mean they needed a country where she could pass as a woman of color idk?

If you want to watch more movies in the same realm as Mean Girls, I would recommend Heathers (1988) if you never seen it. It is a more dark and cynical movie, I think it was supposed to be a dark satire of the more optimistic teen movies that came out at the time like Sixteen Candles or the Breakfast Club. The movie even inspired a popular musical of the same name that came out in the 2010s 😊

I just rewatched this over Christmas and basically talked along to every line because it's just so memorable, it's been endlessly quoted in pop culture since it came out. I still say, "the limit does not exist!" when something is extreme (like "oh my gosh this food is so so good" or "I have literally a million things to do like x and y and z") all the time. Or when my mom is doing something to mimic young people like misusing slang, I say, "I'm not like other moms, I'm a cool mom" and my mom groans and says, "oh no tell me i'm not really acting like that" because she cringes so hard at that character. Or when my sister is complaining about her bushy hair, I quote, "that's why her hair is so big, it's full of secrets." Honestly, there are probably about 50+ lines I pull out occasionally because it's just THAT iconic and applicable to so many situations. It was so fun getting to watch someone experiencing it for the first time!

The one thing that bothers me about Aaron in the scene where she throws up on him, is him wondering why Cady didn't just talk to him, and seemingly misunderstood that Cady was saying Regina was possessive of him and treated him as property, but when he offered to start tutoring her he knew to keep it a secret from Regina because she'd be mad if they hung out. So like. He knew why she couldn't just talk to him lol. And even if he meant before he got back with Regina, he knew that Regina got back with him right after telling him that Cady liked him, so even if he completely believed Regina just wanted to get back with him, it really doesn't take much thinking to realize why Cady couldn't "just talk to him" while being friends with Regina lol.

Haha, Oscar. I was in high school during this time. Before social media, smartphones, and memes were a thing, we used to just quote this movie at each other for fun.

This movie was so well planned out and written. I know its based off a book, but the way the plot develops between those characters, and how the powers shift, and the many many lessons the plot actually teaches you is insane. And many thought this was just going to be another empty teen movie with no substance. Its so cleverly done. I remember a UK interview with Mariah Carey around that time, who was gushing about the movie and saying how quotable it was. Then she brings out a song called "Obsessed" ('why're you so obsessed with me?!') Pure genius 😂 One of my all time favourite movies❤

Well the book it's "based on" is a self-help book. So the writing quality in this movie is entirely due to the movie's script.

Great reaction, love how you picked up on Cady's change in looks as well as Aaron having essentially no personality shown. I'd highly recommend you check out the film St Trinian's (2007). I'd say it's somewhat similar, with it being a comedy about a new girl at a school and her trying to find her place there. However it's British and goes in a different direction, still full of 2000s edginess though.

This movie was funny because Tina Fey wrote it, (she plays Cady's teacher) and Lorne Michaels produced it. I don't know if you've ever seen SNL (Saturday Night Live) but it's that style of comedy and how so many great comedians got their start like The Blues Brothers, Eddie Murphy and many others.

I wouldn't call it a satire. Its just a funny well-written example.
