It was just a shadow of Phil in that interview, he was labored in his responses - not the jokie Phil we all loved and remembered! You hear him talking about Ireland at the end, he DID loved Dublin, but the drugs took such a hold on him, that he once said "that he doesn't love Dublin anymore", and hence the song "Old Town" reflects his love letter to Dublin!

Two larger than life figures. We had Meatloaf around a bit longer, had a great performance in a great movie in Fight Club. I think Phil took his career slump a bit too hard and considered himself lost; which is horrifyingly sad. I think he would've had a major comeback at some point.

@@stephensmith4480 in my own personal experience as a musician, artists love dope because it doesn't screw up your ability to play like a heavy dose of booze does and it takes away any and all anxieties about making something good in the studio or putting on a good show or this or that and let's you really focus on the moment, if it wasn't so beneficial to art artists wouldn't take it, but whatever it gives you will never be worth what it takes, the effect on you, your family, your friends, its something im still struggling with, but at least I'm still alive to struggle unlike other Chicago musicians who have died from it.

Meatloaf heavy rock? Pop rock yes, heavy rock never.
@instructionaldesigner7310
@instructionaldesigner7310 Жыл бұрын
I had a college roommate that used to say the same thing - but he was wrong. the song Bat out of hell is loud and heavy with wailing guitars and screaming lyrics. In 1980 pop rock I think would have been stuff like the monkees, turtles, early beatles and stones. I like and listen to floyd, zepplin, deep purple, vanilla fudge, etc and I never found any of them Heavier than Meat and none of the vocals screamed more powerful than Meat. Are there heavier bands now ? Sure, but when this was filmed Metallica were 10 year old kids.
@petermcallister8489
@petermcallister8489 Жыл бұрын
@@instructionaldesigner7310 he was wrong? He was bang on the mark. Meatloaf were a pop band at best. As for Bat Out of Hell being heavy? Have a word with yourself. They were pop, with little forays in to pop rock once in a while. If Meatloaf were heavy rock, then Journey are a Death Metal band. 😂

@@petermcallister8489 Pete I think its hard for people that weren't around in78 to understand. But trust me in 1978 pop rock was stuff like 60s music like Herman's Hermits, Beach Boys, etc or Disco like BeeGees or soft rock like Seals and Crofts. Bat and Journey in 78 were very heavy, high powered vocals and screaming guitars. in the late 70s and early 80s what would you consider heavy rock ? Please don't list 90s metal bands (they weren't on the scene at the time of this video) and if you list Pink Floyd I would counter that, although good music, they had a heavy organ feel like roller rink music and their most famous song had kids voices. I bring that up because my college friend that didn't consider meat heavy enough loved Floyd. Probably the biggest test for Pop music vs other forms in the late 70s, is that no pop radio station would ever play a song that was more than 4 minutes long.
@petermcallister8489
@petermcallister8489 Жыл бұрын
@@instructionaldesigner7310 Journey are hard rock band and some there Perry era recordings were bordering on heavy metal. They were definitely heavier in their first three albums, in fact they were proto prog metal. But this side of the Atlantic, Meatloaf were considered pop rock even then. So I have a different understanding to you of Meatloaf's musical classification. And it's Peter, not Pete.

@@donjohn2695 I'm not sure I understand what would be a joke ? He overcame huge obstacles to become one of the greatest selling artists of all time.
