So in conclusion if you're having saturated fat (from meats, dairy and tropical oils) eat your fruits and veggies (especially veggies since they seem to have more of the beneficial substances) to cancel out the health risks of a certain ammount of saturated fat. Well that's nice to hear that saturated fat isn't as absolutely devistating as some people make it out to be.

It's a pretty cool study, though I did notice there's definitely some faults with the self-reporting of BMI and food intake. Somehow despite >75% of male participants being overweight or obese, average calorie intake is only about 2200. It's even more apparent in the female participants - ~50% overweight/obese despite an average intake of about 1600kcal. AND they're doing 15-20 outs of mod/vigorous physical activity per week. Sure the data could be skewed by a few outliers but... that doesn't quite add up. Got to love self-reporting!

so the study didn't show any connection between meat and cancer but processed food which doesn't matter if it's plant or meat. it causes cancer due to chemicals they use. the group who ate processed food and plants at the same time showed a lower rate of cancer. it doesn't mean plants mitigate it. it just means they eat less of the cancer-promoting food which is the processed food hence the lower rate of cancer

Meat is not really problematic, it's processing that adds a number of carcinogens - nitrosaminoglycans, aromatic hydrocarbons etc. Saturated fat is not problematic either - more research shows that the medical community overreacted with blaming fat on everything. Only artificial trans-fats are confirmed to be detrimental.

As usual great educational and objective content! Big thanks Layne! Through my own training I have stumbled upon a question that is so ridiculously surrounded by garbage info it's insane; stubborn fat deposits. I was wondering whether it makes "sense" to diet down quite lean to get rid of it, and "start fresh" with new deposits, with a more even distribution of fat. Could you make a video on the (potential) science behind stubborn fat? There is so much noise online, and it would be super interesting!

Totally unrelated to the video I know. So pardon me for that. I was recently in a pretty severe car accident. I got rear ended by someone going around 55 or so. My doctor diagnosed me with post concussion syndrome. I was wondering if it would be possible for you to do a video on how long I should take a break from lifting and how exactly I should get back into lifting. Also, I've been using my sensory deprivation tank a ton during this time and it seems to be improving my symptoms. I was wondering if you've ever looked into the science of sensory deprivation tanks. I know you're the guy to go to in order to find out if they're horseshit or not. Thanks for your time. I love your content.

when you say "increase fruit and veg" keep in mind that is the same thing as saying "less junk food", for some reason we never do this same comparison with "increase meat". You can't actually conclude from what you said that vegs make it ok to eat meat, rather that eating less junk food makes it ok to eat meat, whether that can be replaced with veg or more meat (basically carnivore) is unclear from this evidence

Is the high fruit/vegetable intake mitigating the effect or is it that eating red/processed meat with vegetables/fruits a diet that doesn’t include highly refined processed carbohydrates? I personally think red meat is one of the healthiest sources of protein and order my family’s red meat in bulk by ordering a cow from a farm in our local area. We cook it with fruits and vegetables (also locally sourced when possible) and all of us are lean, athletic, zero health issues. What was the definition of processed meat in this study? Do we actually get unprocessed meat at a regular grocery? Where exactly is the line of too processed? Is there a specific type of processing that is bad? Is cooking not a form of processing? I'm not trying to just muddy the water here. I'm genuinely curious. But I'm not sure a vague definition like processed is very useful. There's got to be some types of processing that is bad. Most people don't eat raw meat. So what kind of processing are we to avoid?

Plants have fiber, the liver is a clever organ and it has been discovered that it releases alot of the crap that animals give us though the fiber. 2. plants have phytochemicals. man, all this shows is HEALTHY USER BIAS. The group who eats high amounts of red meats and no fruit are less likely to be health conscious individuals (exercise less, smoke less, drink less, eat processed garbage). Everybody thinks red meat is bad for you so when you lower the red meat consumption you see better rates simply because of the healthy user bias. The group that ate high fruits AND red meat just proves that it is in fact the healthy user bias since it's hard to eat high amounts of red meat, high amounts of fruit and still eat processed garbage on top of that. The fruit doesn't "mitigate" the "harm" from red meat. There's no evidence that shows red meat causes cancer other than shitty epidemiology studies that don't control for the healthy user bias. Adding the high fruit to the high red meat group is a way to control for that healthy user bias which is why you get much better results. Fruit doesn't have magic curing abilities, that's insane and it's very weird how you fail to see this. epidemiology is incredibly flawed due to all the variables at play as you know obviously but to me, this study PROVES the healthy user bias and shows that red meat isn't bad for you.

What is considered high amounts of processed meats? I eat 2-3 ounces of deli turkey everyday for lunch. However, I eat very high amounts of fruits and vegetables. Should I cut out the deli turkey or would that risk be cancelled out from the fruits and veggies. I’d like to hear your opinion. FYI, my eating happens have been consistent for 2 years and I’ve dropped 130 pounds. (From 330-200 at 6’4”)

You are completely fine, 2-3 oz of deli Turkey is like 120 calories? And it’s lean protein and the like you said you eat lots of fiber too

What is processed meat exactly? Meat that has been cooked? Once you cook the meat yourself isn't it processed at that point? I'm confused

Processed meats have some kind of preservative to make them last longer. Examples include bacon and salami. A cooked steak is not a processed meat.

Pretty common sense though. If you are gonna eat a shit load of meat you better match that with a shit ton of fruits and veggies

Japan has always had a high meat diet. They are just eating more processed meats now due to fast food restaurants moving there.
