As a technician who let the industry after 10+years i can assure you the techs are of no concern to the shops right now, you will not get you deserved pay. You will be replaced by someone with less experience, just like every other trade, and keeping a full house of techs on labor pay is immoral. Their concern is not service

I heard a story on Thursday at my local indy shop. I walked in and saw a tech working there that use to work at the local Volvo dealer. The story was, as a Master Tech he was getting killed with work. The new guys were playing the numbers game, picking and choosing what they would or would not work on. Well the dealer got screwed in the end, when this particular Master Tech left so did a number of their experience techs. They knew when he left, all the BS that was getting dumped on him, was now going to their problem. This dealers service department is presently filled with techs that have less than two or three years of experience. There's a saying MONEY TALKS BULL SH*T WALKS. BTW that former Volvo Master Tech is making more money at the Indy shop than he was making at the Volvo Dealer.

It's not just trucking it's all of automotive in general that is suffering at least on the wrenching side. 10 years, $50k in tools, and years of training and I'm considering hanging up my tools. Why the hell would I keep fighting for a small raise every few years when greens get hired at my rate or higher? I work at a dealership but it doesn't seem to matter what level company. Two of our managers bought half million dollar houses this year... but the single alignment machine at our very large shop no longer operates because it must be replaced at a "hefty" $30k.. management says they cant afford it right now so just jerry rig the alignment, uh no. Not a single tech makes over $60k but the $275k/year middle manager wants us to cut costs. Multistate dealership corporation... They know the answer and it's all just Orwellian Animal Farm.

In the nearly 15 years I worked in the industry as a dealer technician, I only got a raise ONCE. That was when I finally earned my ASE Master certification and with that, I made Lexus Master. It was a $5 raise per flag hour.... I only really ever got more money by working for a few years at a dealer and then finding another dealer and getting hired on for more than I was currently making. I had A LOT of pride working for Lexus, until I started to see Lexus changing its attitude toward technicians. The product was getting more complex, the repair manual starting only having basic diagnostic information. Tech support used to be incredible getting technicians out of sticky situations. In the last year I was in I swear I had more experience and product knowledge than the Lexus employed Tech rep. Im now currently a public sector fleet tech and I feel like I hit the jackpot. Bonus, I DONT have to work on garbage trucks lol.

There's one big issue that no one ever wants to talk about. It all depends on where you are working and what type of job you have. Like it or not, the only way to get the training you need to work on new systems, is through factory training. And that means you need to work for a dealer. The type of work I do every day is completely different than what you will see working for an aftermarket shop. You'll never get the education you need by going to trade school or passing ASE tests. All that stuff is practically worthless. The work is much more technical. If you're not comfortable with a DVOM as your most used tool, you probably don't want to make a career out of working on cars. Things like tires, brakes, services, etc..., is considered lube tech level work. I get cars toed in on an almost daily basis from other shops that just don't know how to work on them. Aside from not having customer pay work, you also get internal and factory warranty/recall work, as well. This practically guarantees that you won't run out of work. There's always something to do. I know factory time doesn't pays less than customer work, but there are some advantages. You get extremely fast when you do the same jobs over and over. For example, some of the easier dashboards to remove an install pays 2.7 hours. Most people would think that's insane. However, I look for those jobs. Why? Because in most cases, I can do it in under an hour. You also don't have to wait for a service writer to sell a job. Factory repairs don't have to be sold. Your hourly rate is usually much higher. If you know what you are doing, you can make a lot of money.

When companies complain about shortages of workers, it is code for shortage of migrants willing to work for less than market rates. NOT Mechanic, but engineering, ever since july 2022, I have just sat, a couple projects, otherwise me and the other engineer are just watching youtube and fucking off, I got a second job just because I was bored. as a mechanic. I don't think we will be laid off as we support manufacturing and both of us are required to be around. but I can forsee a labor layoff in the shop. and on admin. its really strange. I have never had a work/ shortage like that except for 2 months in 2020 when covid first hit.

I'm a 47 year old mechanic, only slightly disabled, a white male, conservative and Christian and pro-Trump, I have diesel experience and UAW training, I've passed ASE pre-certification tests for automotive things I never even studied, but there's absolutely no work for a middle age man like me. I'm on my wife's account because I keep getting banned. If there was any demand, I'd be getting job offers. I'm not. I'm working at the Subway my wife manages, so I know the local economy is doing really well. We're averaging over 300 sandwiches per day, that's as high as it's ever been. Last summer we had a one day spike to 368 sandwiches, which is the all time record for that particular Subway location.

@@Themiddleclassmechanic Price fixing is an agreement (written, verbal, or inferred from conduct) among competitors to raise, lower, maintain, or stabilize prices or price levels. Generally, the antitrust laws require that each company establish prices and other competitive terms on its own, without agreeing with a competitor. When purchasers make choices about what products and services to buy, they expect that the price has been determined on the basis of supply and demand, not by an agreement among competitors. When competitors agree to restrict competition, the result is often higher prices. Price fixing also includes agreements among competing purchasers or competing employers about the prices or wages they will pay. Price fixing is a major concern of government antitrust enforcement. Individuals and companies that knowingly enter price-fixing agreements are routinely investigated by the FBI and other federal law enforcement agencies and can be criminally prosecuted. Potential penalties include lengthy terms of imprisonment (up to ten years) and large fines (up to $1 million for individuals, $100 million for companies, or twice the gain or loss from the offense). Where appropriate, the FTC may also bring a civil enforcement action.
