This tutorial shows you how to use open-source tools to design mechanical assemblies that fit together and can be drawn or 3D printed for use in the real world. It explains the principals of parametric modeling and why it's useful. I will also show you how to use blender as an assembly module to create a large assembly and see how multiple parts fit together in the computer and in the real world.
The design files and blend files for the video can be downloaded here:

In blender you can actually use a setting to see edge length and face angles, and in preferences you can use 3d print tools and cad tools, I'd also recommend adding loop tools in the preferences

Very good insights. I will try adding a Blender to my workload. I normally use a spreadsheet in Freecad to imput externally driven measurements, like the a person's height. That way, I can make my change in one place, and the information will propergate to all sketches in all bodies in all parts of my project. Good show, thanks.

Wow, this was an amazing look at those 2 tools. Funny, I have been looking at free solutions because I am worried about limitations that might be imposed by these other companies like SolidWorks, and AutoDesk. I knew that eventually those cad systems would become practically innaccessable. I was looking at a single solution for everything. Looking at Blender, it seemed to me to be a kind of free-form design tool, and I was disappointed that it could not be used as a precision solution. Anyhow, this really got me seriously looking at these 2 tools and I think I can commit. Thank you so much for this demonstration. I am a little perplexed about one thing, however. I assume that since FreeCad is able to output an .stl file, it should be directly transferable to a 3d slicer. The real reason for using Blender was for its ability to make changes in more of a "free form" fashion without altering critical dimensions? So, I guess I do not understand how the slicer determines the dimensions of an stl file output by Blender if you cannot set those parameters within Blender?
@dc37009
@dc37009 2 жыл бұрын
I think when you design 5mm in freecad the stl encodes the data, and its carried over to slicer, blender...

Actually I have designed and 3D printed a lot of mechanical parts all in blender with complete dimensional accuracy, so it is certainly possible and not really that difficult. Also you can parametrically model to some extent using non-destructive methods using "modifiers" in blender, and there are a number of great tutorials on KZfaq describing that. On the other hand FreeCAD is designed from the ground up to be parametric so watching that kind of workflow is fascinating and there are some real advantages to it. Making nice mechanical dimension drawings in blender is barely even possible without some pretty bizarre workarounds. Otoh if you've designed a part parametrically in FreeCAD then making a beautiful formal drawing is almost automatic - so cool. Also it seems they are making strides with doing assemblies in FreeCAD and getting closer to something like Fusion 360. Both of these open source projects are absolutely fan freaking tastic and advancing year by year, with the developers seeing the abilities of other programs and trying to fill in the weaknesses. A great time to FLOSS.

An interesting aspect to use blender for assembly, but I think if you are not familiar with rigging you can not simulate a movement of the assembly setup. That's why I rather would learn it in freeCad. Anyway blender is on top for the organic modeling of parts. There is also a workflow to import stl back from blender and integrate them as a part of parametric modeling.

Check out the Linkstage3 version of FreeCAD its orders of magnitude better than 0.18; it got configuration tables for your parts so that you can make one part with many configurations. Also, try Assembly 4. It's quite good.

I only model in a blender. And it can be customized to exact dimensions. And you can also simulate models so that they can then be easily modified as needed by googling a non-destructive blender. P.S. Finally I saw that at least someone made a beam on the short side with a rectangular table.

Nice. I'm looking into making CNC patterns to send to mill to cut boat parts. I've been looking at FreeCAD, LibreCAD, and Blender. Any of these three have steep (at least for me) learning curve with no idea if the time spent will be wasted. In addition to patterns, I wanted to be able to take the pieces and fit them together to "assembly" the boat on screen and look for problems. Sound like Blender will do that for me. Have you tried out any of the newer Blender precision modeling tools? Is it ready to replace the CAD tools?

Good video ! I have tried FreeCAD in the past and I have to agree it's a pretty decent piece of software (being free and all that) but about a year ago I started designing in Designspark Mechanical, which is also freeware. Maybe it is a matter of personal taste, I'm just doing this as a hobby, but I have to say I find DSM somewhat less clunky and just more intuitive to work with than FreeCAD. What are your thoughts on DSM ? At any rate, keep up the good work.

In professional packages you use whats called an assembly mode where you fit the parts together and design the assembly of the fitting parts. You often go back and forth adjusting things until everything fits. My workflow is use freecad to make accurate parts, then make the parts I change such as 3d printed parts in blender to tie everything together and edit those parts in blender so I don't ahve to keep exporting out of freecad to update the assembly of the parts.

blender uses polygons to create meshes. it is fast and you can create very high detailed meshes. only down fall of blender is that is hard to create dimensional models because its focused on cgi art and not for making objects in the real world. its in essence for turning real world things and ideas into the virtual world. blender does have cad like addons and its getting better every day, what blender does that would be very difficult in cad to do is to create very smooth and curved surfaces quickly and almost effortless or anything that does not require two mechanical peices to work perfectly.

15:41 Your comments (drawbacks) on Blender are COMPLETELY WRONG. 1. Use the "Solidify Modifier" to add the thickness to the model; 2. You can Scale with precision: Click 'S' and write the value on your keyboard that you wish to increase the model to. * This technique is valid for Scale, Rotate and Move; * Search for Precision Modeling with Blender;

I liked your video but about Blender, you're wrong. Blender can offer so much more than FreeCad. For someone like me, who uses Blender for many years, it does not make sense to learn FreeCad and than import into Blender - you can do ALL the job inside it cause it has many tools for measuring and accurate modelling. The first explanation you do about it and watching the moments where you do some modelling, it's clear that you're not that familiar with the tool.

haaaaaaa! BS. freeCAD is the only free CAD software that is not a criminal thieving cloud version. ...but it has a horrendous interface and work flow is ridiculous due to that. I gave freeCAD too many trials and chances burning hours and hours out of my life over the years, hoping they improved, and each time I gave up... too clunky... to painful. After all these years they are progressing at snail pace to beef it up, and they continue to stick to a model that is crap.
Was I unfair to FreeCAD?
