The Olympic figure skating division is known for its beauty, creativity, and athleticism, but what happens when the integrity of the sport comes into question? Canadian figure skaters Jamie Sale & David Pelletier share how they felt when they were awarded Silver during the 2002 Winter Olympics after giving the performance of their lives. (Season 1 Episode 2).
Synopsis: Featuring in-depth interviews from all parties involved, MEDDLING details the 2002 Olympic figure skating scandal. From executive producers Tara Lipinski and Todd Kapostasy, the four-part docuseries takes viewers through the beginnings of the careers and personal lives of each skater - Jamie Sale & David Pelletier of Canada, and Elena Berezhnaya & Anton Sikharuledze of Russia. Viewers also hear first-hand from the judge who was at the center of the scandal, Marie Reine Le Gougne. With a mix of archival footage and present-day interviews with the skaters, judges, commentators, and the fixer accused of it all, fans get a look into the controversy from beginning to end. Meddling will premiere on January 6th.

Yo that judge just said i scored them better because their program was newer she scored them better even though the other pair skated better? Okay.

If those two pairs had skated their programs today, the Russians would have run away with it. Their short program and long program were so much more difficult. Their skating skills and choreography were in a league above the rest too. Based on skill and performance, Elena and Anton deserved the gold. People who don't see that don't know figure skating.

But the COP was not in use then. You can't take a skating program out of the context of its time, judge it by an entirely different scoring system that didn't exist and say, "They should have won." That makes no sense. Under the system that was in place at that time, Jamie and David did more than enough to win. If the COP had existed in 2002, both those pairs would have skated very different programs.

That crazy French judge doesn't even believe what she said herself. She's just grasping for an excuse, in this case that S&P repeated a LP, to cover up the fact that she was part of a cheating scheme. There's no excuse for what she did, even the nonsensical one she gave here, and she knows it.

Exaclty. And the Canadians program was less difficult, less intriquite and less complex than the Russian's. You have to factor that in here. It's easy to be perfect when it's easy.

The part that no one wants to talk about is that Sale and Pelletier had a juniorish program. One of her jumps was under rotated and his axel was actually a waxel.

People who know pair skating would not think Sale and Pelletier's programs were better than the russian pair's. Even 20 years later there are still not many pairs can handle the complexity of Elena and Anton's performance.

The French judge is still trying to gaslight everyone --- even to herself, even though it's already been proven she was guilty. The Russians bought her vote in exchange for the French team winning ice dance. That was the agreed-upon deal. She was was so careless that she even talked about the soon-to-happen collusion with a taxi driver who actually recorded that conversation inside the vehicle. Also, her reasoning that an "old program" was inferior doesn't hold water --- there are so many skaters who skated to old programs and still won gold, like Oksana Baiul.

It is rich hearing the French judge speak now, because when it happened she said she was pressured to place the Russians higher than the Canadians. An example of selective memory at work.

This was a very fascinating program. I love both pairs. It's funny how the French judge is questioned because she was supposed to score with the western judges. Why do western judges ALWAYS get a pass. They do the exact same thing people acuse the eastern judges of doing. The fact of the matter is the Russians program was far more intrigue, complex and demanding than the Canadians. That has to be factored in here. The Canadians deserved to win on the 1st mark and the Russians the 2nd. That's exactly what happened.

figure skating judging has always been political. i think even with the new system it's still bias. there have been soooo many skating performances that should never have been awarded the gold medal. but political judging allowed that to happen.

I personally cannot stand Jamie. She has such an ego and arrogance, “ how dare they”? Give me a break. Their programme was beautiful but the difficulty wasn’t anywhere near the difficulty of the Russians. Look at Kim Yuna. She was robbed of gold in Sochi literally and moved on with subtle comments of disappointment but said that she respected the judges decisions. While these two do nothing else than keep winging twenty years on. And that’s after they received their gold medal after all because of their tantrum. So unclassy and unsporty..whether they deserved it or not, I find especially her behaviour ridiculous
