Pretty cool to see STAT Medevac in a video lol, they land at the hospital in my city all the time, so that flyover sound is a daily thing, kinda funny how you get used to it, I always wondered what helicopters they used, thanks for this, it's a great video!

Thanks. The Helicopter was derived from and built by Messerschmitt-Bolkow-Blohm as a MBB BO-108 in Germany. The company was purchased by and merged with Aerospatiale of France to form Eurocopter and marketed by them as a EC135. They have since taken the parent comglamorate company's name Airbus and relabled the model simply by putting new stickers on the side as a Airbus H135. It is still made in the original plant in Germany. Chris. 240-R-A 3:38PM September 29, 2022.

Stuff like this is exactly why I want this job. These types of helicopters handle beautifully and their automation reduces workload like crazy. Hovering in an r22 in heavy winds is a chore. With the Airbus aircraft in particular, its wayyyy easier as the computers help the aircraft keep stability in hover. I also love the thought of getting the call that someone is in need of immediate assistance to get a patient from the middle of nowhere to a higher level of care. Just the the thought of having a badass job while saving lives is fascinating.

some portions of the video were cut. If I recall law correctly you cannot record an air transport without permission from both law and family members. In this case strangely, that blue box you seen was a organ box/ cooler. IN my entire life I have never seen an on-sight op like that, this was not an airlift this was an organ helo....crazy.

I'm from England and ours can seem slow but about half as well as a couple of critical care paramedics also carry a doctor, frequently a trauma specialist though specialists in pre hospital emergency medicine are becoming more common, this is starting to see a move to doing as much treatment at the scene as possible then transporting, they're also going to land anywhere they can get in without waiting for anyone to set up a landing zone, standard for getting airborne from the call to deploy is three minutes

I filmed this and am also a Private Pilot in Helicopters. The local hospital was closed a few years ago and at the time the local E.M.S. was not permited to have the Helicopter meet them at the Hospitals HeliPad for liability purposes, since resolved. I worked at that hospital for a time and had to sign all the HIPPA Privacy Act papers so I intentionally do not film the patient and edit out any portion accidently captured. Even minor emergencies, weather dependent, they were calling the Helicopter as a precaution. July 24, 2022.

That's a bit OTT for an ec-135 ,here in the UK our air ambulance is the same ,it's a ec-135 too ,they land pretty much anywhere that can without all that following it.

The local hospital in Ellwood City, PA USA a far suburb of Pittsburgh was abruptly closed and its HeliPad was temporarily off limits while some legal situation played out in the courts. During that time the local Volunteer Fire Department designated a safe place with STAT MedEvac for their Medical Helicopter to land if ever needed and they would secure the perimeter. The Hospital is still closed but the Fire Department got permission to use its HeliPad when needed. Chris 240-R-A July 28, 2022.

question from a european hems crew member: why let you run the helicopter in idle? in every video about american hems at a scene, the helicopter engine is in idle during treatment. is it not a waste of fuel during a longer treatment and more dangerous? in europe we switch the helicopter engine completly to off. thanks a lot for your service and take care!

My understanding is to burn fuel (thus less weight) in case the patient is large and there are worries about weight. Another reason I heard from a pilot is to cut back the amount of time they have to spend on the ground to get the on-board systems warmed up again and ready to go. It was my understanding that manufactures of certain helicopter models recommend a certain amount of wait time between start up and takeoff.

I only filmed this and am not part of the crew although I am a Helicopter Private Pilot and was EMT-B Certified years ago. This was filmed near Pittsburgh, PA USA. There are two companies providing Medical Helicopters. Life Flight established in 1978 and is Hospital owned has always completely shut down and waited for Rotors to stop before any medical crew get out and doesn't re-start until all aboard are securly in. I assume this is for crew safety and safety of personnel on the ground. The company in this video STAT MedEvac although hospital connected was and may still be privately owned. Unless they know they will be on the ground for a extended period in most cases they do a Hot Loading. I assume this is for safety of the operation of the Helicopter once the Pilot has the engines running smooth and sweet there is no reason to turn them off. Additionally STAT does a large amount of training with First Responders so there will be less people unaware of the dangers in the Landing Area and they want their patient in the Hospital within the Golden Hour. The simple answer though is it depends on the company's established protocols. Chris 240-R-A July 28, 2022.

We sometimes shut down…sometimes do. We make that call based off the estimated time it’ll take on the ground to load the patient. We try and not shut down to lower the risk of having an aircraft issue when starting up again and being Stuck on the ground. These ECs like to have random issues occasionally on startup

Sumtimes they do. Sumtimes they turn the engine off and not the turbine. Or the whole powerplant. If it's a critical they stay hot. Depends on the pilot mostly. When my brother was hit on his bike they had to revive him twice before transport even tho he was already at the landing site. They had the rotors and turbine spinning the whole time even tho it took another 10 mins.

Hi. What you're most likely noticing there is a Helicopter with a counter clockwise rotating Main Rotors will tend to drift to the right. This is known as Right Translating Tendancy. To counter this the factorys rig the Main Rotors Mast a slight bit off set to the left which in turn cause a Left Skid Low apperance. It is opposite in the French built Airbus Helicopters that Main Rotors turn clockwise. Hope that explains it. Thanks from Chris 240-R-A February 5, 2023.

The local Hospital closed down and although there are 3 other Hospitals they are each give or take about 30 minutes away in three different directions on country roads and if they went by ground and the Emergency Room Doctor determined it was a trauma they'd need to be flown from there and that additional hour wait was cut out by flying directly as a precaution. As STAT MedEvac was originally set up in 1984 to work in affiliation with Mercy Hospital which has since become a conglomerate of UPMC member Hospitals, the best guess would be one of the UPMC Hospitals with Mercy Trauma Center as most likely. UPMC stands for University of Pittsburgh Medical Center it was originally United Presby Medical Center or just Presby later some group bought it made a new Pittsburgh-ese name for it and a monopoly to compete with Allegheny General.
