Another scenario. You go in for a procedure. The performing doctor is participating provider. However, the anesthesia doctor may not be, or the lab doing some work may not, or radiology isn't. So your doctors office say it's covered by medicare but that's only THEIR fees not other participating parties in the procedures. That happens a lot in a commercial insurance where the other party or parties may be not in network for example

That is a possible scenario, yes. But also as you’ll see in the video here, it is quite rare that charges like this happen. However if you are a person who is concerned with the possibility of potential excess charges, then Plan G may be a great fit for you!

Medicare payments are not keeping up with private insurance. Don't you think more doctors in future will not accept Medicare assignment?

It is actually much more challenging for a doctor to see Medicare patients but NOT take Medicare Assignment. If anything, it would be easier for them to simply not take Medicare at all - but like I outlined in this video, there are several reasons that doctors will continue to take Medicare (and Medicare Assignment) even with the lower reimbursement rates.

Stephanie, I need help with Medicare not paying for 3 Rxs, we payed out-of-pocket ($598), after 3 months of paying out-of-pocket Medicare approved the Rx and said we have one year to be reimbursed for the out-of-pocket expense, the pharmacy is clueless to help. Can I contact you?

I have private insurance and Medicare, so primary and secondary insurance. There is a problem sometimes with Part B billing when covering items, but I meet all the guidelines of Part B. Other than that everthing goes ok.

Can a lab or hospital or a dr in a hospital bill excess charges? That would be an unknown kind of if you had surgery or a procedure where you have no idea of all the people in and out and I am sure will send a bill.

Hi, Stephanie! Guess what? My dr is one of the 2%. He is non-participating. I am one of your customers and will begin Medicare on 8/1/24 with a Plan G supplement. Would you recommend that I switch doctors? I'm trying to make it as simple for myself as possible, hence the purchase of Plan G. Let me know if I should discuss this with Carter. Thanks!

Hello! With Plan G, you don’t have to worry about excess charges at all. So it’s OK if your doctor doesn’t accept Medicare Assignment!

Thank you for the explanation. I have a question regarding excess charges by state. If my supplement plan is issued by RI a state that does not allow excess charges, but I get care from a doctor in FL, can I be liable for excess charges? I have a HD-G plan so I am not concerned, but curious.

Yes - excess charges are based on the state in which you receive the medical services.

Two questions 1. Is it only doctors that could possibly not accept Medicare assignment or could hospitals do it too where 15% could be huge. 2. Is it true if they don’t accept assignment that Medicare also doesn’t handle your supplement billing too and you could be stuck submit to your plan N?

Excess charges can only be charged for Part "B" services, which could be a doctor bill in or out of the hospital (including expensive surgeries). Hospital room and board as well as hospital nursing services are charged under Part "A".

Hospital facility fees are covered under Part A - excess charges are only on Part B services, so the doctors and surgeons fees are potentially subject to an excess charge if the physician does not accept Medicare assignment. And even if your doctor doesn’t accept Medicare assignment, typically there is an “automatic crossover” with Medicare and your Medigap plan. So as long as the doctor will submit the claim to Medicare then you should not need to separately file a claim with your plan N.

Is this also for dr offices that are associated three a hospital? I was seeing a dr and because it was a hospital based dr office they billed me for walking into their office. I paid my copay which is $40 the hospital sent me bills for $120 every single time I walk into that office. How are they able to do this? I’m on an advantage plan.

Unlike a supplement, anytime you use a service with an advantage plan there is a co-pay. It is pay as you go. With traditional Medicare plus a supplement, you pay a premium to the insurance company every month so you don’t have to pay as you go. However, there are no excess charges in Medicare advantage.

I wouldn’t - but I’d double check that my surgeon accepted Medicare Assignment first (which they likely do!)

@@AbtInsuranceAgency How about if the surgeon accepts medicare assignment but the anesthesiologist doesn't? The reason you buy insurance is to transfer the RISK of something happening from you to an insurance company. The decision should largely depend on your tolerance for risk. Of course, this needs to be balanced with affordability.
