I had a 1999 Beneteau Oceanus 46. After I put in a GEN set an 800 amp hours of batteries and changed out some of the tackle to more hardy sizes, I loved it. It did everything well. It was so responsive. It was fast. I could docket between two boats with only a few feet on each side against a bulkhead. Once the steering wheel fell off the binnacle in the middle of the passage! Beneto had only use resin to attach it. They forgot to put glass mat around it. We had to bring the boat into the wind and heave to While we screwed the steering wheel flange onto the binnacle. I have never heaved to before. I had read about it like everybody reads about it but I’ve never done it and I was a little anxious about whether at work. It worked like a dream. It was magic. The real beauty of it Beneto is below the waterline. Forgive the spelling I’m using my iPad speech to text routines. My right hand became paralyzed last year. The sailing videos warm my heart. I don’t think that even these videos can convey to somebody that hasn’t made an ocean passage in a sailboat or lived on a sailboat the actual feelings one experiences. You live by your wits. When you’re 1000 miles offshore there’s nobody to depend on other than yourself. I think the most important thing that I would say to somebody single handing or even not single-handed is don’t let yourself get over powered. When it comes to putting out sale, less is more. And then the next thing would be in decent weather practice docking And the procedure for tying up your boat as you do dock under various conditions. And I guess the final thing is there are some passengers you don’t wanna bring on your boat. They’re dangerous. Some people. Not all people. What are the most difficult task is to allow a passenger who is not a sailor to help you dock or jibe. You have no idea what they’re going to do. Neither do they! I don’t think 50% of the people on earth even understand how a sailboat goes forward. They don’t understand in their gut the wind forces on the cell. I tried to explain it to them using a pool table and a Karam shut off the bank and they still don’t get it. So you obviously can’t give the wheel to somebody like that especially if you’re running. They’ll come across the wind with no idea that they’re going to kill somebody with the boom. I like Beneto’s. It’s a lot of boat for the money. They lie about their diesel capacity. So you do need to add a whole lot of tankage. They say that the Diesel tank is 50 gallons. It’s 38. That doesn’t stop them from saying that it’s 50. I put in two additional tanks.

Your tour have me food for thought to consider this particular vessel. I am now seriously considering this for purchase, also in a 2 cabin version. I agree completely on the underseat storage issue. If I get this boat, I will be enlarging those openings. Excellent tour, showed the definitive advantages to this hull.

Thoroughly enjoy this channel and I will be sad when I catch up and have to wait a week or more for a new video.

Hi Sophie, You might not want to read this one just a warning. The holes in the settee lockers are made small on purpose because sailboats do get knocked down sometimes. Having all the contents dumped out and fling across the caben can ruin your day and be quite dangerous. A good winter project would be to add turn buttons to all the lids. True story, my wife and I were sailing from Curacao to Jamaica in the Caribbean. Wind on the beam at about 25 knots, 1 reef in the main and a small yankee sail on the bow. It was a late dark night and I could not see the oncoming waves rolling under starboard beam. My wife was asleep on the lee settee I was in the cockpit tethered to the boat. I remember hearing it coming a loud hissing sound I grabbed the windword primary winch and hungon. The wave rolled us down about 90 degrees, we came right back up and went on sailing like nothing had happened. Nothing came out of the lockers and nobody was hurt by flying cans of beef stew. Yes all the lids had locks on them. So moral of the story. Winter project get locks on the lids to the settee lockers ;-)

good point sheldon, but you can still have big openings and locks to boot.
@RyanSophieSailing
@RyanSophieSailing 5 жыл бұрын
You make a very good point Sheldon. And hem... 90 degrees roll? Can’t have been super comfortable 😱 I join Ian in thinking that locked storage spaces and small access holes are two different things. There is definitely a smarter way to design those lockers, so they don’t open in rolly seas and have better access. I have a couple of ideas how that could look, and there might be a project coming ;) /Sophie
@sheldonpenn1815
@sheldonpenn1815 5 жыл бұрын
Go for it:-) A lot of cruisers make changes to there boats to make the boat better to live on or sail better. This is what turns a boat into your cruising home. The 90 degree role was one time in 18 years of cruising.

@@RyanSophieSailing i'd Probably Cut those under seat areas wide open and Put Piano HInges and make all openings about 18" - 24" . Then i Would Cut Cushions to match openings. Maybe Even Better also Cut Fliip Down doors in the Bottom So, items could could be slid in Like drawers. Accessing things Easily is Definately a Key to a Better Quality of Life ! i am Going through this right now on Organizing My Service Truck. Making more than one motion to access a Part or tool is Ludicrous in my present opinion. 3 motions max. open a door, access item directly is Key to a Good Life if u are accessing said item Regularly. Difficult access is Extremely tiring as u Have Demonstrated in this Video & reduces Quality of Life Exponentially.

Good tour. Thank you. When you finally replace those tiny storage hatches consider this. Two piano hinges. One at the back and another one about 6-8" in front of it. Then most of the time you'll just lift it up, the cushion will stay behind the second hinge. But if you're really working in the locker you can remove the pillow, open it wide at the first hinge. Don't forget to add a string you can hook onto something so you don' t have to hold the panels open. Daniel Gilbert who studies Happiness pointed out that fixing the broken hinge on a screen door at your house that you struggle with a couple times a day, can make you happier than buying a new car. So maybe if you replace all those silly hatch-lets you'll stop dreaming about 60' catamarans.... Even if there's some structural purpose to the way those lockers are designed (to make your furniture stiffer), it's overkill. And if opening the whole seat panel bumps into the table... then by adding a third hinge the panel can open up like a snake, missing the table.

All your storage issues can be easily solved with the cutting of new hinged hatches. Yes, they may need support and latches but easily done. The hard to get to storage area, well, I would look at a large horizontal slide out storage bin instead of going in through the top. Make sure all access points are latched. The AIS transponder rec/send is a must have. Also, in my opinion, if your Nav gear is 2007, it’s 11 years old. Time for new toys there and with links to iPads too. Radar below and in the cockpit is more than a nice thing to have, it’s important as far as I’m concerned. Watching rain squalls , weather fronts ships etc - you want all the eyes you can get. Anyway, enjoyed your tour. Thank you

Hey guys...thanks for the EXCELLENT boat tour! I felt like I was right there with you. No jerky camera and just the right amount of content! BRAVO!!! I really like the layout and have to agree with Sophie. Why don't they build (cost?) a pullout drawer in some cases. Also, would you consider putting your life-raft outside on the back of the boat. This allows you to release it into the water and POOF...a magic life-raft appears with very little effort My final thought is... you said the ditch bag was ENORMOUS!!! That could be difficult to get out of the storage compartment and to the back of the boat as you go blub, blub. blub! (Which we hope never happens) Maybe it could be closer to the stern as well. Just thinking out loud! PEACE OUT! Ü

The life raft placement is something we are still having thoughts about... it may change place sometimes soon indeed... when we are offshore, the ditch bag moves under the saloon settee, for the reason you mention ;) but when we’re in port, we tuck it in a place where it’s not in the way... And you’re right, I hope we NEVER use this equipment! /Sophie

Sophie; Beautiful boat! Blue Performance makes Foldable Storage Box (item numbers BP590 (single) BP591 (double) and BP592 (triple) that easily mount on cabin bulkheads. We very much enjoyed the tour (and your wonderful sense of humor). As for anchors, I cannot attest from personal experience, but I've heard nothing but good things about Rocnas (apologies to Arthur Afond). I've also heard very good things about Mantus.

You can make those settee lockers so that the entire top hinges open. Just attach a piano hinge to the back and make sure that you have a positive locking mechanism on the front in addition to putting a mechanism to secure the lids for the smaller openings for when you don't want to open the entire thing. It's also a good idea to install some internal baffells so you can keep good separated and they don't go sliding around in there either. I did a Pacific crossing during the Pac Cup race on a Morgan 38 and that's how it was set up and it worked well for us, crew of six racing hard 24/7. Also, you should add fittings to front of the settees so you can set up lee cloths, which are much more secure for sleeping when you are doing longer passages than those large for and aft berths.

Hi Peter, thanks for those recommendations! I do like the idea, i just dont have the time. Though i do think we can make time to rig up some lee cloths, we have been talking about his for awhile. - Ryan

Once the boat is seaworthy safety equipment comes next on the list so get the Class A AIS transpoder ASAP. There are a few pinch points in the Med where you will end up sharing the water with lots of big commercial leviathans and you will feel like a rabbit on the motorway. My daughter was delivering a boat from Frontignan to Athens earlier this year. Brand new 50' but no AIS. I had a text from her as she was going through the straights of Messina at night and on round the toe of Italy saying that there were so many ships about she was having to use an on line AIS tracker app on her mobile. This allowed her to to ID the ships about to run her down so she could call them on the VHF. So when close in you can use your mobile to id those big buggers. (I could see her on Find Friends and helped her spot the ships that looked as though they could come close). She also face timed me to help id some of the lights she couldn't remember🤦‍♂️ Ah daughters...

A brilliant boat tour. The boat manufacturers could take a lesson from this on how to tell prospective owners about their boats. You do need a heavier anchor for sure. (Add a fisherman/pick type anchor as well for rock). I would add 100M of rode with 10M of chain as well and I think you mentioned a stern anchor but add a reel of line for it which you can run out in the dinghy with a length of chain if you run aground, (sorry, when you run aground).

Look for a Jambo Anchor, they are specially made for the Med´s - holds very well on Stonie Grounds like Croatia, Italy and Superstrong in Sand. A Friend of mine runs a Charter Company in Croatia and all his Boats equippet wirh it. I Love it much.

You’re right about being cold at the helm at night. And you’re right about hiding by the qtr deck. But that’s at sea. You really don’t need to see the chart plotter every second. But you’re obviously a real sailor! It’s not only cold. It’s wet in a driving rain.

Have you checked the polars for the boat, to see how wing snd wing compares to gybing downwind? W&w often feels faster, but usually is not. If your settee cushions are fabric? Clean them, then apply 3M Scotchguard till they are soaked. Allow to dry, and you will find even chocolate wipes off. It is not cheap but it is very much worth the price. You will be amazed at the difference. Reapply every year or two after cleaning.

Hahaha! I’m so sorry guys, I did film the bilge (which frankly, is the most uninteresting part of our boat. It’s flat and there is very little space). That video was over 30 minutes long, and I had to cut it! But if you REALLY want to see our bilge... I made an Instagram story just for you :) /Sophie
