Long before this big comic event, there was an episode of The Batman that gave us basically both, a jokerize batman and a Joker attempting to be Batman. It was quite fun seeing the roles reversed on both sides even if Joker was just playing around and not taking his batman role seriously. Really the best part when both attempt to take down Penguin, leaving the bird man utterly confused to the point of almost giving a meta on Batman's villains at one point.

10:21 I liked the small details like Jason being able to get one shot in before being gun down. There also the references to the plans Batman made to take every member of the JLA and when it comes to him he says using his family against him is their best bet... so in this one he takes them out first. Also you are right, Martian manhunter wasn’t burn. That was another reference to Batman’s contingency plans, he basically used a chemical that made his skin combust when in contact with oxygen.

I think that in a way, it's because Joker's death always symbolise some sort of moral failure from the heros. He's probably one of the least redeamable person in the dc universe but as long as they keep arresting him and put him back in Arkham, they can have the moral high ground. But when a hero kill the joker, it is a symbol that he have fallen to the same level as the joker by breaking the most important rule.

I've actually always liked the idea that the Joker's craziness is primarily the chemicals in his system. The reason I like this is because it makes the Joker sympathetic and explains why Batman doesn't want to kill him. Batman understands the Joker is also the victim here, and from a certain point of view the most sympathetic of all of the victims of Ace chemicals, because this poor innocent now can't help himself but to have an atrocity level of blood and evil on his hands, and it really wasn't his fault.

Sasha, those voices were awesome (even Puberty-Batman)! I had no issue with BWL in the Metal event, but then afterwards he's been popping up and affecting things all over: Batman, World's Finest, JL, Hell Arisen, so on and so forth. And he was taking out people from Super Monitor to Phantom Stranger so it was really pushing the whole "Bruce can do all things!" I think teh worse for me was Hell Arisen since the Infected played absolutely no significant role in the book to have impact.

Can you talk about how Jean Grey death became a joke and why the animated serious treated her like the damsel in distress when she's the most powerful member of the X-Men and why people find her sexy
@unigenius
@unigenius 4 жыл бұрын
It's because she was a weak damsel in her original conception. Jean could BARELY lift a car tire when she was a teen. One of the boys ALWAYS had to jump in and save her for one reason or another. And once they granted her telepathy on top of her telekinesis, she was FAR from being as powerful or as skilled as Professor X. She got stronger and more skilled as time went on. But nothing too crazy or powerful. Then the Phoenix saga happened and changed her completely. She was more decisive and bold. And her powers were WAY ramped up! She could do things that she NEVER could before! Like dismantle a car and then put it back together. Or turn Cyclops's powers off. Or just straight up fly! So the animated series tried to depict that part of her character when they went to add her.
@unigenius
@unigenius 4 жыл бұрын
As for why the characters find her sexy....it goes like this. In the original run, the team was Cyke, Angel, Beast, Iceman and Jean. She was the ONLY girl around. And in a house full of teenage, heterosexual boys...the ONE girl that's there will be the SEXIEST girl there. Later on, they added Lorna, but she left when everyone else left after the Krakoa mission. But Wolverine still took to her "girl next door" demeanor. Because, compared to Lorna and Storm, Jean is far more reserved and sort of submissive.
@AesculapiusPiranha
@AesculapiusPiranha 4 жыл бұрын
That's like a lot of things and I don't agree she was a damsel in the animated series. They did nerf her a bit, but it was probably for the best or they wouldn't need team work. As for the other two, modern writers tend to be unnecessarily irreverent which is a sign of the times and most comic characters are drawn to be sexy until very recently. Idealized human form and all that.
@jhornacek
@jhornacek 4 жыл бұрын
Original Jean Grey in the comics was not a joke but she was the weakest member of the team. She could barely move anything with her telekinetic powers and was always having to be saved by her teammates. It was only years later after her powers grew, and especially after she go the Phoenix power upgrade, that she was one of (if not the) most powerful team members. But we know now that the Jean that got the Phoenix powers in Uncanny X-Men 101 was the Phoenix Force in Jean's form and not the real Jean. So even when she returned years later she still had the pre-Phoenix level of power.

I thought the 'Metal' event was just okay overall though it did have some high points, such as this issue. You've mentioned most of what makes me like it so I'll mention the one thing that really irked me and still does whenever TBWL appears- his speech bubbles. Not that I've a problem with them changing when Batman does, that was indeed a nice touch, but I found the mostly tiny, red on black lettering really hard to read a lot of the time. I mostly read digital comics as I am once again without a local store and found that having to magnify the bubbles really irritating in that it spoiled the flow of the stories. I know at least one other reader who had this problem. He is almost as old as me but I don't think it is an age thing. I had no difficulties with everyone else's speech bubbles after all. Sorry to go on about this but I'd managed to forget about it until the 'Death Metal' comic came along to annoy me all over again! Anyway, great video again! Have you increased your output since the virus lockdown thing started or am I just all the more appreciative of them just now?

As in my fifties nowadays, I grow up with a completely different style of comics. My daughter was in the states last year and purchased am issue of The Batman who laughs for me as a gift. I love The Dark Knight Returns from Frank Miller, but i really had a hard time to wrap my mind around this Story Arch. The drawings are intense, the coloring is way beyond my head and the story mirrors the insanity of the Joker inside Batman without any filter. It's pure, rough and sometimes to much for my taste. I guess i have to adapt...

With the mention of the films being the inspiration for the name, would it be wrong for me to want to see Edgar Allan Poe influences on The Batman Who Laughs. Batman was conceived in Poe Park in The Bronx, so a few references would be neat. Among the thoughts for Batman Who Laughs would be chaining up several people and burning them alive as in Hop Frog, or burying someone alive behind a brick wall as in The Cask of Amontillado.

I enjoyed Dark Nights Metal because when I read it, I thought it was a non-canon having-fun elseworlds style thing. It's a bit too 10-years-old-cool for me to want that to be the main flavour for DC going forward, but I definitely went out of my way to read it. The green inner cape is glam. My biggest sadness is that he went and got new attack robin kids instead of Jokerising all of his family, but I think he's going for more of an Emperor vibe, and subordinates that aren't immediately obedient might get in the way. Would love to know if he stumbled on Damien while wiping out the League of Assassins, or how he convinced him to play along since he's been doing a convincing turn to the light. Did he torture all his pets? Did he make Damien kill his pets? You hit the nail on the head when you called him cruel.

Hey Sasha love your channel and you are so fun smart and entertaining that I watch videos about titles I never read, i.e. I collected mostly marvel back in the day. Anyways there is an oft overlooked X-Men run that I would enjoy hearing you cover; it's the Brood series by Chris Claremont starting in issue #156 but the main story is in issues #160 - #167. On the surface it is an Alien trope horror story, however it is a very introspective run in which each team member struggles in their own way with their mortality and Wolverine with rationalizing killing his friends. Hope you check it out, keep doing you!!!!

Dark Multiverse as a concept still doesn't work the negative outcome favoring was already covered in the revamped earth 3 "Earth-2" and the multiverse already covers variation since positive outcomes aren't a positive universe exclusive.

I think the dark multiverse provides an interesting explanation on why the world of DC has events that play out like a well written sorry where all conflicts have a resolution. Like a meta reason why the DC universe is parced into concise stories. If there is a portion of the multiverse that is destined to tend towards bad things, the main multiverse should logically tend towards good things. Like there is a higher power that made the main 52 has statistically unrealistic tendencies towards good endings.

This is one of my favorite DC storylines. I fell in love with this event the second I saw his fusion with The Flash and the moment I saw The Batman Who Laughs....I was in it for the long haul lol When a friend of mine sent me a link telling me the DC Deck-building game was releasing a Dark Nights Metal expansion, I thought it was a joke....but then I clicked the link. I had to buy it. It pulled me in, and I'm glad it did. Playing a game of it was amazing and the art chosen, the characters involved, it was amazing. It led me to get the trade where Batman faced off with The Batman Who Laughs using his cowl and its one of my favorites

The Batman who laughs is proof that not even Batman himself can survive the concept that a villain is far more terrifying when used sparingly. Some characters need to have their stage time limited to do their job effectively, like Hannibal Lecter in The Red Dragon and Silence of the Lambs.

Scott Snyder is great with Batman. He really likes to dig deep and go dark. His Batman Eternal run is still one of my favorites.

I have to say my favorite part of all these videos is when Sasha voices the characters. Her Batman and joker are my favorites.

The only thing better than Sasha's gravelly Batman voice (which is a riot applied to Golden Age World's Finest Batman), is her gravelly Batman Who Laughs voice.

I tend to hate giant event books but I do like the aesthetics of the Metal covers when I see them on Instagram or whatever.
