As for the proliferation of SUVs over, say estate cars, for those needing a high capacity vehicle, have you not noticed that large estate cars are fairly thin on the ground? I personally use an old Subaru Outback estate car but the model was replaced with what is effectively an SUV in 2009. If our friend has to give up her work with the chickens (which seems likely if this continues - the cost of the tyres is considerable) some rare breeds will be all the closer to extinction.

It's about "keeping up with the Joneses". They see their neighbour getting one, so they need one too. SUVs spout this active/healthy lifestyle, where you can go off on an adventure into the wild. Ironically, most SUVs are completely useless off-road. Instead they clog up urban areas unnecessarily. If you're after interior space in a vehicle, what is wrong with station wagon.
