The world misses Cat engines for medium to large trucks.

The C7.1's power density and torque is great for the displacement (7.0L), but it is somewhat on the heavy side. The C7.1 HP is about 750 kg. For comparison, a similar displacement and output GM Duramax L5P (6.6L, 445 bhp / 910 lb-ft) is about 400 kg. The same can be said of its Cummins and Ford 6.7L competition in the same power class (400~450 bhp). This may not matter in marine applications, but it matters quite a bit in heavy duty trucks. This largely explains why you don't see Catepillar engines in light trucks. I am sure CAT is more than capable of producing a lighter engine, but it is a saturated market and there may simply not be the financial incentive to enter the fray.

@@5.43v That in itself was kinda sad because Adv EGR worked in the end... but reliability issues and lawsuits from its the premature introduction forced by the environmental extremism of the Obama Administration destroyed Maxxforce as a brand and eliminated an American engine manufacturer while creating an opening for MAN. The point remains though that for CAT to have a 7 liter offering targeted at trucks, it is going to have to weigh like a Maxxforce DT (or whatever Cummins or GM alternative). It can,t be a 1600 lbs engine.

CAT shouldn't have ever gotten out of OEM powering commercial OTR trucks, it'll be tough for them to get back in, they've lost too much market share to Cummins and Detroit!
@tommyw.9424
@tommyw.9424 5 жыл бұрын
Well of course they lost market share, they left the market. Detroit isn't much to worry about, since they're Daimler only now. The only competition is Cummins and all of the new OEM brands. I hate the new vertical integration of trucks. Used to be you could pick a truck you want and then get it set up with the engine you want, transmission you want, and so on. Now every single truck update brings more proprietary bs.

Hey guys! I have a C7 engine family 5CPXH0442HBK with the cylinder head off and the walls on cylinder #3 with some scratches, if not gouges. The original symptoms were huge blowby coming out and blue smoke / oil coming out of the tail pipe. What is weird is that cylinder and head area for cylinder #3 are dry and we found oil on top of the other cylinder / head area. Also, only cylinder #3 exhaust manifold hole is wet of oil and the other ones are dry. Please let me know what are the chances that this engine can be rebuilt, maybe by cutting the walls and putting bigger pistons. Or, what are the margens /specs / limit for cutting the walls. Thank you for your time and effort

There is an owner/operator I know who has owned and run a 1944 Cat D-8 cable dozer since he bought it surplus for $300.00. Cat has tried many times to sell him a new dozer and he keeps refusing because they went to electric start. His has the donkey starter on it and he loves it as in the winter when it's not uncommon to see -40 or lower temperatures his never fails to start as long as he brings an extra Gerry can of gas with him. The company he's contracted to sent him to level out a new parking lot 12 years ago and while he was finishing up the new to the company 140 grader showed up with the computerized leveling gps system on it and after three passes on the gravel that had been leveled by the dozer operator called the owner and told him he was wasting his time out here as the dozer operator had leveled the new parking lot dead on spec simply by back dragging the blade on his dozer. The operator of that old D-8 is still working today at 87 years old and says why should I retire? I enjoy running a dozer. One morning someone will show up on a job and find him dead at the controls on his D-8. He's a cranky cigar smoking grumpy old bastard who has more than once shoved a caterpillar salesmans pickup truck right off the job site if he felt it was in the way. The local Cat dealer generally send their new salesman out to visit him to " break then in properly ". Only one salesman ever returned not with an order for a new dozer but an order for 8 cases of oil filters, fuel filters, and air filters and everybody at the Cat dealer wanted to know how he did it. He refused to tell them. Every time he visited the old timer he came out with two boxes of cigars, the type the old timer smoked, parked the company pickup next to the old timers pickup and carried both boxes under his arm while smoking his own cigar. He and the old timer got along like they grew up together because he never tried to sell the guy anything. Just two boxes of cigars and fresh hot coffee a loaf of bread and four different types of deli meats, mayonnaise and other condiments and showed up on the job just before lunch. Opened up the ice cooler in the back of his truck and started making a big fat sandwich, after making his sandwich he look at whoever he was visiting and say be my guest, make a sandwich I got plenty of fixing. His wife suggested it after two weeks of no sales so he decided to try out her way. You win them over with food and they will buy stuff from you when you refuse their cash for the food. He did this at every job he visited and always got decent sized orders for supplies or parts and occasionally new machines when other salesmen had visited the same companies and got nothing except we'll call ya if we need something. That salesman retired last year and figures he spent $ 100 bucks a weeks to keep the deli cooler stocked for one week but made far more than that in commissions. His wife stacked the cooler every morning with whatever she had just cooked in the kitchen, she cooked about 30 pounds of fresh chicken with potato salad and four large bags of potato chips and the second stop of the day was handed an order for more equipment than he ever sold at one time in his entire career. Just over $2,000,000 worth of loaders, dozers, rollers two water trucks and dozens of other pieces. The contractor while he they were making sandwiches that morning from his cooler got word he won the biggest contract he ever bid on and decided then and there that the kid salesman from Cat never bothered or tried to sell him anything he didn't need was the one to order the equipment with. His commission paid for a new house for him and his wife. The Cat dealer almost had a heart attack when he handed in his orders at the end of the day. He refused a raise because he told the owner why give mea raise when you know my weekly commission will exceed my basic pay but thank you for the thought. He said the following weeks paycheck was double what his basic pay was and the owner refused to take it back. Only for three weeks after he started as a traveling salesman did he collect just a basic paycheck with no commissions then started hauling the ice cooler stuffed by his wife, the cigars were his idea as everybody when he started smoked cigars. There are ways to sell and service grumpy customers. You simply figure out the easiest way to their heart. And don't try to sell them a thing. Old school ways are the best.

Great improvements. I design hulls for fast, fuel efficient, comfortable rough sea operation, and as an engineer. I liked your presentation very much since all your improvements build on the old where possible. Here is why I write. I have another further improved design, for rough sea even greater safety and comfort, and at this time I need engine dimensions, allowing the engine to be lowered further into the run of the hull. I checked the CAT site, but found no dimensions included anywhere. You do wise designs, I notice, so below the drive shaft, where the hull run is, any needless engine feature which if rediced in width would allow mounting deeper. Any change in the mounting rails which can be narrowed closer than your present 28.9" shown with needed vibration absorbing pads, would be a further help. You may know that hulls in rough seas are harder to turn over when the center of gravity is lowered. My hull is really good in bad weather, but I want to try to improve it even more, since it may be used for Search and Rescue. My present 39' design i am working on will allow +40 MPH with your 500 HP C7.1. My 36' fishboat with 270 HP gas Olds 403 marine, pushed the hull to 35 MPH, so my 39' should get +40 with your 7.1. These are real workboats, not runabout hulls. I am located in Bedford, Nova Scotia, Canada. One other reason for mounting lower into the run, is to reduce the height of the engine box and working floor. Your competitor QSB-6 has the drive shaft below the mounts? Your is well abov the shaft. One final thing, my hulls do not have that forward lifte bow but has an attitude of 2-3 degrees at speed, so I tend to have the prop shaft at the same angle as your drive shaft. Your 12 series seem to be aimed in my direction more ? For your info, my 6' hull model of my 36' full hull, was tested smoothly and perfectly stable without exponential power increasing, but almost linear up to +70 MPH. I saw no need to go beyond that speed , but would allow more. I'm getting older, so my present hull design may not be built? Just confirming the urgency. Be safe and keep up the fine work.
