I got to meet Ken Loach a week ago today at a local socialist workers meeting. Such a nice guy. Got to have a brief chat with him and thank him for the film, letting him know my childhood was very similar to the circumstances in the film.

My 60 year old aunt who has worked her entire life recently lost her son to suicide. She didn't want to work anymore as she was only a few short years from retirement but the job centre forced her back into the workplace. That's why the system is screwed. People who have worked their entire lives are not taken care of when they need it.

I'm from Montréal, Québec (Canada) and the thing that really upsets me: how come the Royals are worth more than 500 millions $ and they let their people starve and live miserable lives??? Worst: how come a lot of British respect and adore the Royals?

Good grief GB get it together. Everybody detests dole scroungers and people who milk/bilk social services but there's got to be a better system put into place to assist those who REALLY need it. Forcing older adults with little or NO computer skills to do things like filing for benefits and filling out forms on-line is almost a %100 guarantee that the Govt. can impose a sanction and reduce payments.

The system is shit. But... do you not all think if we were closer as families we would all be better off? I live in China... salaries are low and food and rent isn't cheap. But the family unit over here is so tight. No family will see another family member hungry. Grandparents live with their children and get looked after or more importantly.. loved. But what do we do with our Mums and Dads? Old people's homes. Or a little granny flat.. pay em a visit every month just to make ourselves feel better. Something needs to be done about the benefits system but we should also look at ourselves and ask when is the last time I called my brother? Or is my Aunty doing alright she's a bit quiet nowadays? Get the family back together and save yourself the excuse of well life is just too busy. Until we sort our shit government out I think this is something we have the power to do ourselves.. right now.

Unfortunately the rise of neoliberalism and Margaret Thatcher saw an end to that. Let family's buy their own council houses becoming slaves to debt. Brutally eradicating outdated industries with no contingency. All of this created an unprecedented wave of poverty, crime, drug abuse. Vicious circles that tore families apart. Your ideals are virtuous and sound. But there are reasons outside of societies control that have contributed to the breakdown of what you rightfully state is important. I'm not saying it's impossible, I lived in Nepal and witnessed the same culture regarding family in a world of poverty, but the economy and political agenda of a state has significant differences globally, and unfortunately Britain has been put in a divisive state where what you say would solve things isn't easily achievable and will take a lot of undoing to achieve. I think the argument that perhaps are society has crossed the precipice is sadly a valid one.

@Ben James and@@brianclarke61993 It is not that Ken Loach is a shieister because he is rich. He too has probably worked hard all his life in his chosen field. He is rich because the entertainment industy is demand-valuable, meaning his customers and employers (ie viewers and film companies) will pay soooo much more for HIS skills and product than Melvin making factory widgets. Loach has done an enormous public service to bring this issue to the screen and (I believe) spent his own money on the film. The sad thing is it will be watched and talked about for a few months and then forgotten. That is to the public's and the politician's eternal shame.
