Sneakers are a $55 billion global industry. According to sneakerhead data website StockX, the secondary market for rare and limited-release sneakers is estimated to be worth over $1 billion. This is fueled by Nike and its long standing Jordan brand. People wait in lines for hours and spend tens of thousands of dollars just to get their hands on the latest pair of sneakers.
To understand the world of sneaker collectors - better known as "sneakerheads" - we spoke with those who know it best, including collector Lex Sadler and dealer Jae Tips, top New York City resellers Flight Club and Stadium Goods, as well as SOLEcial Studies teacher Fresco Wilson.
Produced by Josh Wolff and Sam Rega. Hosted and edited by Josh Wolff. Executive produced by Diane Galligan.

That teacher deserves an award because that's brilliant what he is doing. Get the kids involved in what they like and he found just that. Hard to underestimate how much the kids will learn from him that in any other classroom they would not. We need more like him in the schools that understand what the kids are into and how to incorporate that into the curriculum.

@Zo Kay It's not artificial because EVERYTHING in the market is scarce, in this case, manufactured scarcity but scarcity nonetheless, it's the most basic tactic you can use to sell your product. And i know cheap economic gurus LOVE to make the example of shoes, and their production costs vs their ultimate price, but thats like saying water is wet; a bag of rice costs 15 cents to farm and another 15 to package plus 20 cents transportation, final cost :1.50 The thing about the guys that make those pathetic and pretentious TED talks about the """"overpriced products"""" always ignore the most basic factor when a purchase is made: happinnes, or utility.

It's a generation thing. In my 20's I would spend hundreds on sneakers. Now that I'm in my 30's I won't spend over $60 on a pair of shoes and will only buy a pair when I actually need it. So about a pair every 3 years. Ha. It is silly to me seeing grown men in their 30's and even 40's though wearing Jordans or unlaced tims..

We get it with the "you buy your shoes at Payless" you don't care about sneakers... Some of us love this culture and hunting for our grails... Its nostalgia for buying a Jordan we wore back in the 90's or lucking out and snagging a limited shoe at retail. It's just a fun experience. Not hating on people that have their opinions of sneakerheads; just saying its a cultural experience for some just like music, cinema, and etc for others.

As a collector with about 400 pairs of kicks, I can honestly say that this documentary piece has shed light on why the game is unfortunately dead. People no longer buying kicks for the love and the history and the nostalgia. Now we have rich guys buying shoes just to flip and make profit. Look I'm a capitalist, and I understand their right to resell but for those of us who wear our shoes (I have worn all 400 or mine) these guys have destroyed the game. I want Kaws to wear. These guys want Kaws to sell and make a grand. They have the insider hook ups to get them, and people like me are shut out.

What you're saying doesn't affect the rich. I've sold a pair of yeezy's after buying them for retail for 300% profit over the summer. The guy makes 6 digits, while I'm just a college guy. When demand is high, you bet people are going to pay the price for it. Take your high school economics class to learn that.

I agree, Jordan is iconic, a bball Legend and part of history for both the NBA and the Bulls/Chicago. Curry's won't have a long career due to legs and he didn't change the game, it's not even a comparison that should be made.
@HermannTheGreat
@HermannTheGreat 8 жыл бұрын
Good point, but then I have to ask about the defense of the modern era vs the defense of the 80s and 90s. Sure Curry is an exceptional shooter, as good or better than Reggie Miller or HeGotGame, but he isn't playing against the legends of the 80s/90s either who are playing full out war mode. Even roleplayers back in the 80s were the very best college players who came to the NBA after growing into a 22/23 year old body with higher level competition in college.

+. Complex made a video explaining the cost of adidas and Nike shoes. Most shoes cost about $20 to make, after that adidas sells them to distributors and they are the ones who mark up the price to hundreds of dollars. Nike and adidas also have to pay for tons of stuff apart from making the shoe from marketing to paying the athlete/celebrity. Don't be quick to judge and if your not passionate about sneakers don't bash on the people who are.

Its more than the cost and production of the shoe. Its the rarity, thought, and culture that goes into it. Its not the shoe itself its the ideas and creative thinking that went into it. Every shoe is a piece of art, a piece of thinking, a piece of a culture that some misunderstand and overlook.Most shoes even come from an iconic moment or time and the shoe is I portal to the past. You are getting more than just a $300 shoe your getting a $300 moment.

I think It's dying down though a lot of the shoes just sit on eBay and other buy snd sell sites because people are tired of paying the greedy prices. Serves them right though because their bums that don't even care for the product. The best thing anyone can do is just let the resellers get stuck with the product so they realize they made a mistake. As far as the companies their part of the problem because they allow it to go on. All the shoes people want are gone within a day and they don't restock even though they can. Yet celebrities are given them with no hassle at all and they don't even have to pay for them even though they have multi millions of dollars. Sick world we live in. The way to end this system though is for Nike and all retailers and online buy and sell posts to take everyone's Id and any other personal information and if their found selling the item for any more than retail value they'll be charged. Also meet the demand for their supplies. I watched a video recently that was posted the Jordan Facebook page for the new Jordan 3's free throw line and black cements and there is a line in the video by the narrator saying these shoes weren't made for resellers. Really! Then why are you allowing the one day and done stock. It's so easy to fix it but like this world they allow corruption.

Daniel Schneider that false dream you gave just won’t happen yes many shoes stay there but that means that buyer did poor research. As me a personal reseller you watch the hype and the shoes you know are going to sell out from Nike in an hour. Buy it and resell it.

Bro resellers are lame. They are destroying the business. I understand selling shoes here and there but straight up scamming buying the most pairs every release to make a couple bucks is lame. Killing the hype for ppl who actually have a true passion for shoes and aren’t able to get it because of resellers.

As long as there is a small supply and high demand, there will be resellers. If there aren't, why shouldn't I come in and resell a pair of Jordans for 10k?

I try my luck with retail and if im unsuccessful ill just keep my $400 because thats about average of what I was paying. The resell market has gotten so out of hand that I lost the passion of sneakers

+Chuck Horris I did in fact look it up and found no correlation specifically between wealth and sneakers. I did find a race correlation, but one cannot assume that because blacks on average earn less that all of them buy sneakers uniformally. The sneaker trend seems to affect upper middle class blacks, with regular 100$ range sneakers being popular with everyone else.
