As both expansive and delineated, mega dungeons are great hosts for the solo GM.
Maze of the Blue Medusa (0:00); D&D (7:27); Song of Blades and Heroes (11:25); my character (16:03); building an encounter (24:14); back to the maze (40:10)

All your videos have been great, thank you. You helped me make the transition into playing solo or gm-less with my partner.

That's so great to hear! And your comment is reminding me that I should be referring to 'coop' or just gm-less play in addition to assuming someone is just playing alone!

I love this book. I was able to print out on a plotter a huge copy of the map to hang on my wall. Doubles as a map and as art.

Mandroo It’s a remarkable piece of art. The aesthetic experience of working with this material really brings gaming to a different level.

Checked this out, but shipping is 35 USD, prohibitive for a book costing 50USD. That is very unfortunate because I would totally have supported this!

I absolutely adore the aesthetics of Maze of the Blue Medusa, and not just the visuals and design, but also the layout. The idea of showing an 'overview page' of several rooms/halls with short non-functional descriptions is completely thematic. As a character you might actually be looking into several spaces at once without taking action. Then, if you decide to investigate closer or interact with a space, you have to flip the page to read the 'mechanics' of the room - in more detail and function. Brilliant! I'll definitely be using this in my future story-driven game designs. Thx!

Arcubal design Yes I totally agree and perhaps could have shown the layout of the book even more than I did. It is absolutely set up to facilitate a sense of discovery. So well done.

Firstly: that was awesome! Thanks for posting this really neat take on how to use gaming books, it pulled me back to my years as an only child encountering rpgs for the first time and using my lego sets to figure out what all those (shadowrun 2nd ed.) rules were about. Secondly: it's all done and gone at this point, however I feel compelled to point out that, by the scale measurements given in the book, the rooms in MotBM are huuuuuuuge - like, 70 to 100 feet is not an uncommon wall length inside most of the rooms! So... I think you shorted yourself in terms of ranged combat options. But whatever! that rocked anyway!

adam stone Ah well first thanks for the great comment. I am an only child too and I have often wondered how many of us soloists are. Second: great point about room size and my character! You are totally right! Glad you enjoyed the vid. I appreciate your comment.

great to see this module on your channel. Hope to see another video going through this maze. I recommend zak smiths other work, 'a red and pleasant land' it's Alice in wonderland combined with vampires and offers a lot of possibilities for solo gaming especially exploring as a ranger.

Yes, 100% you are right. That was a mistake due to some editing/video/filming choppiness. I should have put up a note indicating that but I didn't do that either...

Do you always mix bits from different game system and does it get confusing?,do you only use the characters once or do you play them again and level them up,if so,how do you remember what systems you used the last time?.

Gerome Coombes Great questions. I do always use various system and if I’m organized I make notes on index cards and leave the notes in a box (or if there is no box in one of my gaming notebooks). Sometimes I do carry characters along and take them out later. They’d be written down in a notebook or, If there was a box, left in the box with their stats. But often I will go back to something and mix new things in to see how it goes so I don’t even need to remember. Plus my collection changes so there are new things to try out (like now I can’t wait to use my d100 Dungeon mapping tiles with something, but I don’t yet know what )

Song of Blades and Heroes? That's interesting, I wonder if it would not be better to use Tales of Blades and Heroes, the RPG from the same author that's based on the Song of Blades and Heroes...

This has been presented on other channels, actually a semifamous book. I think it was out of print for a while and went for a high price. Zak S is ofcourse known from Vornheim and A Red and Pleasant land.

The Dungeon Dive The two dungeons in the back of Frostbitten and Mutilated were disappointing, tbh. But generally, yeah. And Patrick Stuart is no slouch either; Veins of the Earth is virtually required for anyone who wants to run an Underdark campaign.
