The fact that I can spend an hour or more watching a video on bike chain wear says a lot for your content. I appreciate your sense of humor too re: your comment that GCN kept your interview to 15 minutes, and adding that obviously that's not how long the recording was! Keep up the great work!

One vote for a basic 3-in-1 oil test, or 'spindle oil' as I have head it referred to as. (hey, they put a picture of a bike on the bottle, so it must be ok, right?) It's 2 or 3 wt usually, and I've resorted to this and also ATF when I've run out of lube on later legs of long distance, remote bike tours (it was all they had at the shop. or that the mechanic in the roadhouse had that was vaguely appropriate) - or I'd forgotten to pack any! (only once)

I dont race, do commuting, adventure riding and bikepacking, but I want my stuff to last as long as possible. I now have 4000km on a 105 11 speed chain and counting on my commuter and not close to 0.5 wear. I am officially an immersive wax convert! Thank you

I use hot melt wax (Silca) on my road bike throughout the road season. I use the same stuff on my gravel bike from the end of March to October. From October to the beginning of the winter, the conditions in southern Finland are harsh; high humidity and low temperature. I don't have a warm storage for my bike. I have noticed that hot melt wax does not protect from rust in these conditions. For this reason, I switch from hot melt wax to Rex Black Diamond drip in October, and when they start putting salt on the roads, I switch to Rex Arctic. These are not a perfect solution to rusting and both require the drive train to be dried after use, but the rust protection on these seems to be better than with hot melt, and is sufficient for my use. A wet lube might be better, but then I would sacrifice the cleanliness of the chain. Again, the winter conditions in southern Finland are just terrible for the drive train. Salty slush. It's hard to protect from that. Now I am just waiting for the hot melt wax season to begin :)

Would be very happy to see Juice Lubes and Fenwicks tested, I'm currently using Peaty's all weather so it would be interesting to see how that stacks up. Haven't heard of Phil before, but if it is the best for filthy weather then it would be of interest. I definitely need something stronger than the all weather. After a winter of frequent wet weather, a few storms and a couple of floods resulting in being submerged up to the knees in run off from farms, my chain and chain rings succumbed to a few spots of rust a couple of weeks ago. I''m only using an 8-speed Altus/Tourney so it's not too expensive to replace, and I guess that's not too bad considering it's had ~18 months of use and staying on top of the cleaning and degreasing is pretty difficult when there's literally nowhere warm and dry to store the bike, or clean it when after get home in the bad weather. One thing I heard commented a few weeks ago, I forget which video, is that some of these bike cleaning products actually contain salt, so that isn't great and could be triggering or accelerating the rust issue for some of us.

Its always refreshing to be able to make a decision based on some science rather than bullshit marketing and for that you deserve a very large elephant stamp. A lot of people including me would appreciate some testing based on torque figures associated with ebikes and waxing. I am hearing anecdotal noises about chain life of around 3000km. Since talking to you years ago I have been using food grade wax with the original addition of friction reduction powders applied every 100km, now covered 12000km and the chain is still ok using the Shimano device i purchased from you. My over riding request is dont give it away. Thank you.
@zerofrictioncycling992

Thanks david and ah let me tell you many e-mtb riders would love to get 3000km! Poor choice wet lube over factory grease, high power and the world of dirt and dust - things can be eaten very quickly. Unfortunately testing specifically for this i cant see anytime soon. It is well beyond what my tacx neo's could handle to run control testing and high sustained power and or torque - they will overheat quickly. So then we are talking a specific fabricated rig, motors, software and cooling and that is a big investment. And then the resource actually conducting testing and building a league table. And that would all be for a demographic that by and large does not think about chain lubrication, friction and wear - they just ride and replace things when it no ride no more, or the bike store tells them too on service. About 1 in every 1000 e-bike riders would currently have an interest in chain lube and zfc - so it would be a huge investement for a global audience of about 50 people :)

I used Finish Line Wet for years and found that it washed off really easily in the wet. After every wet ride, I near enough degreased and then add the FL Wet. Wear rates I can't say with exact science but maybe one chain every 2,000 miles and cassette 3,000 miles but I suspect this was because of my cleaning regime and dodgy chain measuring device (confirmed in your last vid) and putting up with shonky shifting. I just thought that's how it is with bike lube. This was on the lower tier Campagnolo groupsets. I've since moved over to MSW (after reading your website) on a new Shimano groupset and the difference in feel is night and day - day being wax. Living up north in the UK, the weather can get pretty gnarly, so I am finding I am immersive waxing after every gnarly weather ride on the weekend (I commute on wet lube on a different bike) but the benefits are worth it. I have that new groupset feel to every ride, whereas with the FLWL, that lasted a couple of weeks with a new chain/cassette. If it's excessive spray, I immersive wax after the ride. It's so much easier than having to deal with the horrible degreasing process of a poor wet lube.

Thanks for sharing experience - yes i must admit i am currently stumped who the market for lubricants like this is. Dirty, high wear etc - its a mess. And yes great move! For your riding it might be worth considering two chains on rotation, that way you can chuck one in the pot, and fresh waxed one on the bike - can make it easier to keep up with waxing when hitting harsh weather very frequently , and you will guarantee two chains through cassette etc - and you always need another chain sooner or later so pre buying next one is just a great way to roll for awesome intrepid cyclists!

Ha that would be my fault. I think for a start a channel on a boring semi old man talking about bicycle chain lubrication has a fairly limited reach. Ie you should see the crap click bait channels covering F1 that get millions because they are simply talking about F1. Even the absolute best of the best channels in cycling get miniscule numbers vs other sports - so for sure the actual total potential audience is small as i dont cover that wide a range of topics. the other part is that im just pretty bad at you tube, speaking and presenting! I personally prefer long vids - thats what i hunt down to listen to when im prepping chains, running and resetting the machines, training etc - and i tend to make long vids - but word on the street is is i kept them to 10 to 20 mins i would get a lot more viewers. I have struggled immensely to try and do that.... But i thankyou very much for you support - that is a very flattering thing for your to wonder :) But yeah far out - as an example - there are a bunch of F1 channels that will pump out vids of say 8 to 10 mins - that have click bait title such as "shock le clerc decision!" - and then there will be 8 minutes talking is circles of absolute nothingburger speculation, based on well if this then if that then if this and then if that then le leclerc MAY consider potentially thinking about a move away from ferrari etc. And its literally just 8 minutes of absolutely nothing. and will get 4 million + views. and have millions of subscribers. And its probably AI generated as its all complete drivel. Same with many science channels - kyle hill did a great vid covering how so many with millions of subscribers and views are pumping out AI generated content that is just absolute rubbish. And here i am like a sucker doing my own work hahahahaha

M8100 12 speed chain (2 of them alternating every couple of months) and using Silca Super Secret lube. Usual ride is 100-150 miles monthly all off road with at least one stream crossing each ride. Zero rust on either chain or the prior one that had an untimely meeting with a big rock before I added a bash guard. I've had zero rust issues but I do quickly wipe off the chain with a microfiber after each ride.

ah if only that would satisfy more than whichever 5 people are on that particular DIY wax blend, the rest will for sure want other blends tested forever and ever. I think overall there is plenty enough knowledge that one can be happy with a good DIY without zfc testing to endorse. Food grade paraffin / gulf canning wax - quality additive if one feels they want to (generally not $15 for 5kg ws2 from alibaba as it is unlikely to be that...) - and rock on. If you want to pay for that test you can of course book in a paid test but it is not cheap because each test is a lot of time and work! :)

On Izumi track chains I always get rust after riding in wet conditions, wiping dry and applying drip wax (Dynamic Slick wax in my case). But it's only surface rust on the outside of the outer plates which don't get any lube and it doesn't affect performance at all so I just live with it. Yes it's a bit ugly but if you ride slow enough for others to see it ... skill issue. On the matter of track chains, testing on bushed chains would be interesting since there is no gap between the inner plates and the pins are running in high carbon steel bushings leading to a long initial penetration period (I have to re-lube after the first 4-5 short rides on a new chain until it runs smooth) and the surface conditions are different from stamped inner plate bores which might affect how different lubricants adhere to the metal.... About Finishline wet.... I used it for a very short period of time on my touring bike a couple of years ago and it ate through a Shimano 10 speed chain within 2000km (from 0 to 0.75% wear in 2 months) in wet road conditions. It has also been the worst gunky mess I ever encountered on any of my drivetrains. And I'm the kind of girl that rides beaten up steel bikes in true alleycat fashion so a bit of chain dirt wouldn't usually bother me but this was way over my tolerance for gunkyness.

Yep honestly bushing track chains are a right pain in the butt. Try the ybn 410, what a beautiful running chain, and very easy to lube and maintain. And so much smoother - everyone who tries who was previously on izumi is like wow, yep, i will be staying with these... And ha thankyou for sharing your experience with FL wet - yes that lube is a MESS. I don't understand how anyone would stay on that product after trying it! The world is and endlessly interesting mystery to me.... :)

@@zerofrictioncycling992 Thanks for the tip. ybn doesn't seem to be available at the regular big dealers here in germany so it's no surprise I never heared of them. Most offers for Ebay import come from Australia but there is at least one shop selling them from Italy. (My local customs office is a real pain in the rear to deal with so I avoid shippings from non-EU countries at all costs). They also have a rust proof version, that sounds good for my usecase as well.... Might even ditch my current Izumi chain that still has a good 10.000km life left in it just to get rid of the maintenance hassle. It doesn't even run that great to begin with. (I thought my chainline was off for the first 1000km or so until the chain was finally broken in a bit. That drove me nuts.) At least 1/8" chains are not as expensive so it's not a big loss.
@zerofrictioncycling992
@zerofrictioncycling992 5 ай бұрын
@@vien4875 yeah depending on where you are ybn can be a little tricky to get. you shouldnt need to worry re corrosion with the 410- that will be nickel plated if silver, Ti-n plated if gold, so pretty high protection already vs bare steel. rollers will be the most rust prone like all rollers, but if you just what a coating on post wet ride they will be fine. Normally pretty cheap chain overall, so if you get two or 3 to pay one shipping - might have you sorted for ages, and yeah - did i mention they will be a whole lot smoother and a whole lot easier to clean and prep! bushing chains suck for cycling.

The rust on the 12 speed XT chain has nothing to do with that particular wax lube. It has to do with the plate being very sensitive to moisture. I have clients/customers on dry/wet lubes on them and they would still rust like hell.

Recent upgrade to Ultegra 12s came with XT level chain and (having previously used squirt) I tried flowerpower - first ride in UK winter conditions and chain went rusty ON the ride. I do wonder if any lubricant or immersive waxing can really deal with UK winters with gritted roads and constant dampness (FWIW I will be using DA level chain in future, so hopefully that helps with the visible rust at least).

that he does, but thats part of the problem. Since i ignored him he has still made about 10 more vids, plus the comments he is putting up all over the place - its pretty bad - and he will keep going (he isnt suddently going to not be morally bankrupt and nuts). And sadly people just dont check. Thats why so many even not dumb people think he is cool, or think that hey maybe space lasers are causing california bushfires, or that vaccines cause autism, or that a great idea after a school shooting is to a) hold an NRA rally and then b) call it a false flag operation . The number of people that would ever bother to check into him and then zfc to see who was the malicious nutjob or not is just not what one might think. Aside from i wouldnt put up with someone doing that if they were standing in front of me, its difficult to let someone just run rampant saying very nasty defamatory things. And...... also just a strong personal view is that bad people keep getting to do bad things because good people stand back and do nothing to stop them. Another big problem with the world. So as much as it might be worst before better, going to have to do something about him - i cant solve the world from nasty fwits but maybe i can reduce the impact of one.

yep TT AW is an alround great product - just note that a wax drip like that - half of what you apply is carrier - so treatment lifespan wont match a top immersive wax. Depending on conditions and ride length - its treatment lifespan may be fine, or it may come up short. And then most important - resetting chain contamination post wet ride - this is easiest with an immersive wax, but a refined wax lube like TTAW you can do a good flush with boiling water rinses, dry, re apply - great reset by boiling water flush rinse, dry, UFO DT clean bath, rinse with boiling water, dry - re apply. Or you can use TTAW with immersive waxing if doing the combo approach (very popular for many)

Even trying to control amount of testing and run a small retail side - its just busy indeed. I have a mountain of docs always to get to updating, creating, trying to keep enough stock coming in, chain preps (literally thousands per year) and doing best level service and support for enquiries etc - it just means the 2 to 4hr a day part time hobby business, is not really that - and so balancing with little guy, riding, big house + all the other fun things out there - it is not that balanced! I am certainly getting more questions from the wifey about hmmm...... why are you doing this when you dont need to do this..... But i would feel i left too much to be done if i bowed out just now, there is more i want do achieve on this front first, and despite for sure some parts are a grind (most work will have a component of that...) - Overall zfc is a lot of fun still. And b) if i wasnt doing this...... i would start tinkering on something else....... i am just a tinkerer...... things turn over in the ol noodle all the time and when i have time its like hmmm lets delve deeper there as that is interesting, so i would no doubt start up something else on some front! I am very interested in the current climate / energy transition and private / government politics and wtf is going on...... and how - how do we cut through absolute nonsense, anti science, anti logic shite that gets pumped out and taken up - including all the whacky conspiracy theories.... oh man... its a deep hole that one - but our future depends on it, hard not to be deeply interested and concerned...

no issues with the video but i'd still ditch this software, do a 2 hour screen capture in the same resolution throughout (camera image on screen, like live-streamers do) then just cut the humongous file down to 40 minutes using losslesscut. it's fast, simple, needs no gpu time or fancy equipment, runs on a 20 years old computer. on the flipside you wouldn't have the privacy blur option or the ability to mix footage from different sources, as this doesn't re-encode any frames and that's by design (hence the long screencast idea). not saying it's better than wondershare (no idea how that is) but you seem to be always worried about whether everything is correctly set this time. with losslesscut there's nothing to set incorrectly, as it has no options! simple software are better. i wrote about it earlier but i think you might have dismissed it as rambling, which it kinda is, but i think it's an ok idea so i've repeated it here. that's the last one i promise

One question, can and should I wipe my chain after a ride and/or pre rewaxing with a microfiber cloth with sprayed on chain degreaser/drivetrain cleaner or acetone to remove dust etc.? Don't have IPA at home.
@zerofrictioncycling992
@zerofrictioncycling992 6 ай бұрын
Acetone is groovy, just take care re fumes. Degreaser not recommended as can leave film behind. Drivetrain cleaner who knows sorry there are so many of them not sure what it is and if it may leave a film behind. Re should you it depends. Dry road riding no need. Offroad can be great to reduce amount of dust brought into wax pot - especially cumulatively over time.

A question about silicone sprays Adam, as I thought about it while cleaning my bike this morning. Any issues using something like Krush bike shine or Muc off spray with a waxed chain. They market the spray as having water displacement properties?
@zerofrictioncycling992
@zerofrictioncycling992 6 ай бұрын
In general it is best not to get bike wash products on your waxed chain (drip or immersive) as they may leave a film behind that hinders next wax coating from bonding well leading to short wax treatment lifespans. If bike needs a clean post ride, like its time to pop chain off and into wax pot as well then have at it. Mostly recommend to treat chain same / similar to brake discs re what you want to get on it - if it would not be great for your brake disc / brake bad, then it would not be great re contaminating wax chain in case it hinders bond next re lube or re wax.

Hey Luin! Again just my /zfc opinion - it vastly easier to pop chain off post wet ride and pop it in a pot and turn a pot on vs ANY other method of resetting a wet or wax drip lube chain post wet ride. Have a second chain that was re waxed last time ready to pop straight on if frequent wet. Wax chain will not rust if it is popped into a wax pot post salt ride day. I do not understand how flush cleaning wet lube chains etc is easier or faster. it is more time, more mess, more cost. but... if ones preference is wet as waxing just not for them - then just understand that re chain wear - one should always imagine if they did same riding with no seals on their bearings. How would the bearings be going? Post any such ride the bearings would need to be flush cleaned and regreased or things would go badly quickly. Same with chain. If you dont re set contamination in chain post wet ride, you will pay for that big time re friction and wear in the chain, so for frequent wet riding, the best lube / path is the one that enables the cyclists to reset the easiest and most often. At this time viking are pretty low on the test list - they look to be all claims no substantiation like oh so many others. I have a long list!! Viking really need to substantiate some claims, and or i need some users accurately tracking wear rates to 0.5% and kms and conditions - if i get some genuine great reports it will move up the list.

I think if you published exact instructions on what to do/what to buy (you do this, but you know what I mean, like a manual for a startup), you could more or less outsource and get more testing done, validate testing with other rigs if needed, etc. At least you could still be the source for the data, so other people don't run off and do your same model and then profit from it at your hard work and expenses.

@@SnaxNoCo Yes overall one should be wary of "push grit out etc". Lubes that need to do that are obviously first attracting and getting grit in. It is a far better approach to resist absorbing contamination to start with, as literally on a say 3ml re lube, thats less than 0.03ml per link fresh lube, and there is only so much flush cleaning that can do vs what some wet lubes will be doing re attracting grit the entire ride time. Sorta like you have someone spending 10 hours slowly sprinkling dust all over your lounge room then every 10 hours you are given 30 seconds to a vacuum. You are for sure going to be losing the battle to keep your lounge room clean....

Hey lucas! i have but the initial testing we believe the product was damaged in transit (i bought 3 bottles from starbike - cost me over $300 aud) - but all 3 tested the same, and very badly. (This testing was requested by team Jumbo Visma at the time). Discussion with Dynamic and TJV we are pretty sure the product was damaged so i havent published the test or data, i need to get further in for testing but its been on a low priority as it is really hard to get (feasibly) in many parts of the world still (ie its like $55 aud shipping still for me per bottle) - and so overall global market penetration and global market interest is quite low vs many other products. I have a follower who might be getting me some on travels, but am awaiting. Wax emulsion lubricants are relatively easily damaged in transit - it is something that some mfg's have had to pay very close attention to re how their product moves around the world (ie hours in a freezing cargo hold at low pressure can split the product) - hence we are pretty certain from the very bad results that this is not dynamics actual performance at all, but..... it also means that the results i attained here could occur with consumers if theirs is similarly damaged.

So it took a lot of time, a lot of money, and was basically the same result. It could work with good editor who is also all over this area, but i dont know one... b) we are working pretty hard just to cover test costs and keep things running and c) time - this is supposed to be a little hobby business. I will be trying to get better (sorry, not my strong suite) - but at the moment if im on top of the week and i can get a spare block on a friday to pump out a vid - then i do. But you tube is for sure not my natural playground - it was not the plan when i started zfc... and i wont miss doing vids when retire! :) I apologise i just dont have time to write a script either - i just have to cover what i can when i can, i will be trying to re do more clips if they are pretty bad to be less bad, but even then sometimes i run out of time to do that.

However, what could actually help you is to make short scipt for yourself of the most important points you want to cover in your video. Put that on a piece of paper in front of you when you start recording. Do not hesitate to start right away with the most important topic and move towards the less important ones as you go on.
