MIT's origami club, OrigaMIT, led the effort to build a Level 3 Menger Sponge out of folded business cards. This was part of a larger, global project sponsored by Queen Mary University of London.
A Menger Sponge is a three-dimensional fractal, which can be made by taking a cube and cutting out a square section through the center in each of the three directions; then each of the resulting smaller cubes is cut out in the same way, and so on until you've removed infinitely many pieces. The Mega Menger Project aimed to construct the largest Menger Sponge ever built using only business cards.

I am currently making a level 2 menger sponge out of perler beads! I made the first half today, a face plus two little squares.But then I ran out of glow in the dark beads, and have to wait to get more. I hope I don’t get bored of the idea before they drop in price so my parents will buy them.

I would have expected that the MIT students would build a machine to, at very least, fold the business cards. Since it is a repeating task with no changes at all. But maybe it been a social experiment...

Can anyone help me understand how a menger sponge has no volume and infinite surface area? I didn't understand the proof's for these I found on wikipedia. I was wondering if it could be spelled out for me in simpler terms.
@odinmagick
@odinmagick 9 жыл бұрын
you start with a cube with six sides. you draw out a 9 square grid on each side. Then you knock out the center section of each side, drilling through it all. That leaves a "frame" shape where it's a hollowed out cube. Think of a rubicks cube that's missing the center square. Each side now has a center hole. That decreases the volume and increases the surface area. Then you draw a 9 square grid on each remaining surface. That would be Eight 9 squared grids drawn on each surface because the middle has already been knocked out. Then you knock out the center of each one leaving a cube that looks like a hollowed out cube made from hollowed out cubes. You keep doing this forever, each time the volume goes down and the surface area goes up until it's infinite surface area with 0 volume. Atleast that's how I make sense of it.

odinmagick Thanks, this helped. I was only picturing the menger sponge as I could see it, and not how the smallest of smallest bits have holes in them too and so on.

Which makes it a shape with an infinitely small volume. The "no volume" statement is inaccurate

Sonobe units are better .... Because squares. The rectangular shape makes it seem not as grounded as a square because the menger sponge is not a rectangular form.

Andrew Brown hey dipshit hater: Freedom of speech means protection from government censorship, it has no application here, even if google, a private company, banned your comment. It especially has no bearing on someone calling you out for your weak, weak hating. Glad to clear that up for ya buddy! Go watch something you like and stay away from fractals!
