Idly took its birth in Karnataka during Chalukya period it spread to south India, with different shapes. During 50 s v had this type of preparation in our village houses with chetani only. Later on sambar was introduced by Maharashtra king Samboji in Tamilnadu.

Food history is very interesting, I too heard of this Sambar story, it seems there was a chief in commander Sambhaji (not shivajis son ) who came to kumbakonam, He was hungry and the kitchen was empty with not much left as it was late night The comander knew cooking so he went in kitchen, checked wht was left, he found some vegetables and grounded masala n sambar was born. Those days Tamilians knew only Rasam.
