Bear with me, this is going to be a bit longer post, but here are my thoughts. 1992 (Original): Great sound overall. The dynamics are amazing, the instruments have a lot of room to breathe, and it has a very thrashy sound. Instrument separation is fantastic. Good low end with scooped mids and detailed treble. Cymbals mixed more upfront along with the drums in the original to hear every little detail of Nick Menza’s drumming. Bass is also well mixed in this album and is crystal clear. Now, my main complaint. While this album’s dynamics and transients are impeccable, the scooped mids along with the upfront mix of the cymbals makes it a little unbearable to listen to for longer sessions, especially if you want to listen to this on repeat. Still a very tight sounding album though. 2004 Remix: Way too mechanical. The singing in this remix sounds like alternate takes because Dave sounds more pitchy in this remix than he does in the original. Drums sound horrible, which is my main gripe primarily with all the remixes for the most part with a couple of exceptions. Another thing is how the vocals are incorporated into these remixes. They sound too upfront and clean and don’t blend in very well with the remixes for the most part. 2012: A long time ago I would’ve said this remaster is fine, but after listening to the 2023 remaster, this sounds so brickwalled and bad. Way too much clipping and distortion. Hardly any room for the instruments to breathe at all. Sounds really fuzzy and has no attack whatsoever. 2023: Now this one is very interesting. From what I’ve been reading this remaster has a lower DR number than the original. Yet, it sounds very similar to the original, which is what I like. The instruments sound more centered in this remaster than the original. The original, at least from what I’ve listened to, has everything a bit more panned out and the instrument separation is wider. So while I do feel that the original is the definitive edition, it doesn’t feel quite as well balanced as this remaster does. More mids have been added into this remaster and the drums along with the cymbals are pushed more into the background than upfront to help balance the piercing trebles for me. The album does sound a little louder and compressed to me than the original and there are certain parts I can hear better in the original compared to this version, but I also hear some elements better in this version than I could in the original. I also feel that the harsh treble in the original has been rolled off and smoothened out in this remaster. This version thankfully retains the sound of the original, but it also makes the mix sound buttery smooth. My recommendation for buying this album is to either get the original version or this 2023 remaster. Honestly, the differences are there, but it’s very negligible. It won’t make a huge difference buying either one. If you want the best dynamics, go with the original version. If you want a better balanced mix, go with the 2023 remaster. You can’t go wrong with either one. Overall 1. 2023 2. 1992 3. 2012 4. 2004 I’ve started to become more open minded to remasters. I’m starting to like remasters such as the 2011 remaster of PSBWB over time just as much as the original.

@@metal_helm Oh, I meant to say that the instrument separation sounds better in the original while the 2023 remaster has everything a bit more centered in the mix. Probably due to a little bit of compression they did in the remaster, but it doesn’t really sound like they used a significant amount of compression. I like the 2023 remaster better because it doesn’t clip and has a better EQ than the original imo despite the lower DR number. Personally I believe this remaster will sound better in the car for me than the original since they bumped up the mids. I’ve never owned any physical copies of music from any band before, but I plan on buying the CDs for all the original Megadeth albums. I’m excited to do that in the future. I think the 2023 wins by a smidge followed by the original, then the 2012 then the 2004 (last two are interchangeable). The reasoning for this, is while I agree the original has more dynamics and better bass, the 23 has better eq overall. The highs sound less tinny and the sound is more glued together. Which is a plus to me and a minus to some! Strangely enough there are aspects I like about the others, like the 2012 sounds monstrous and massive which is a cool gimmick but not very musical or easy to listen too for a whole song. The 2004 is obviously too different then the original and the drum sound is like the copy paste from all of the other remixes but I will say its nice listening to the individual instruments and hearing the increased clarity. It's noticeable on this was my life in Dave's voice. But overall as a mix it sounds disjointed and overpolished.

There are aspects of the 2004 that I do like a little. The guitar intro to Sweating Bullets for example, it gives more ominous vibes then the drums kick in. Awesome! They shoulda left the chorus/stereo fx on Daves voice though. The vox are too dry. That could have helped, though there's no fixing those drums lol cheers

Shockingly, I didn’t hate the new remaster. I was skeptical since there wasn’t any announcement for a physical release, although my worries were quickly proven wrong. The 1992 original version is the best, it is perfectly balanced, as everything should be. It has the perfect bass, highs, and treble. 2004 remix it's totally different, the guitars are buried, the snare is mechanical like the So Far So Good So What remix, but I thinks it's one of the best of the 2004 remixes, aside with Cryptic Writings and Risk. The 2012 has more emphasis on bass, that's a good point for me, I like bass. But it feels empty, I don't know to explain, I like Nick Menza cymbal playing, it's very fluid and dynamic, but in the 2012 remaster the cymbals are a lot quieter, it make Sweating Bullets feel so empty, as the rest of the album. And, as you said, it's brickwalled to deth. Now, the 2023 remaster, I think it's the most similar to the original, my only problem with it it's the treble, man, with bad earphones, it's irritating, it just pierces your ear, specially the cymbals. But i'm sticking with it, I only have access to music by streaming, and for not pirating the original mix, I'll stick with 2023. The 2012 remaster has a stupidly low treble and the 2023 has a absurd high treble, lol. It's so hard to make it balanced? So, the ranking is like this: 1992 > 2023 > 2012 > 2004 Thanks for the video, it's an excellent comparison. But I think you should've included the drum intro of Skin O' My Teeth in the comparison. Imo, drums intros are excellent for these types of video.
@metal_helm

I pretty much agree with you on everything. and thanks for recommending the drum intro to skin o my teeth for sample. I have used just drum parts in the past on these videos, but they never seemed to get the response they deserve so I stopped it. The reason why they are not 'balanced' is because they are not A/B against previous versions. No matter how "bad" a version is, your brain will acclimate to it and it WILL start to sound normal after a while as long as you keep listening to it. I didn't even know that there was another remaster of the 92' mix. That's cool and it's great that isn't brickwalled either. It's kind of like that recent remaster of the Iggy pop's mix for the Raw Power album. My only criticism for both is that there isn't a physical release of any kind as of now. Plus, it seems this 2023 remaster for CTE doesn't include that Cow Palace concert either which is lame. Another thing, you forgot to compare the Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab master for the 2004 remix. But I understand why since it's a bit hard to come by nowadays and the price has gotten pretty costly too. Also, I know that a lot of people don't like that remix, but the MFSL master gives it an overall better sound due to it not being heavily compressed and along with better EQ choices too. It doesn't sound nowhere as bad as it is in this video. I find to be a lot richer sounding and even warm to extend despite being heavy temper with and more machinal sounding than the original, such as with those questionable snare drum samples. Anyway, great video as always, Helm!

@@metal_helm Bad Dude 1 second ago You're welcome! And yeah, that would be awesome. It definitely does improve the sound of the '04 remix. Also, just wanted to clarify even though you didn't even ask lol is that MFSL master is much better than regular 2004 ver. not necessarily better than original 1992 version. That's mainly due to the remix itself not the really the MFSL remastering. The remix took out a lot of that signature clanky & robust sound out that the original is known for. Albeit the remix brings out the guitars more and the vocals too and it seems the bass guitar has a wider soundstage like its airier and more booming throughout the album, but in return you lose decent amount of that low-rumble profound metallic sound. The drums sure did take a hit, though. They are much quieter than they were in OG and digitally temper with. Although, I do have mixed feeling towards those snare & bass drum samples. Idk, I'm not really that knowledgeable with audio engineering and its terminology. So, my explanation and ramblings are probably straight up baffling & stupid. lol Anyway that was some stuff I wanted to bring that up in my OG post. I was too freaking tired, and my brain started to crap out towards the end too. lol Take care, Helm!

so 2023 Countdown is a remaster and not a remix? call it "mix remaster" in the track titles is so confusing, even dicogs calls 2023 remixed
@metal_helm
@metal_helm 7 ай бұрын
The only remix is the 2004 here, not sure why people think the 2023 is a remix. Remixes sound way different, the only remix on this channel (as far as I cna reemmber ) is the Pantera one and the Megadeth ones. Everything else is re-recorded or just remastsered.

Not a giant fan of the mix on this album in general. I think 1992 sounds dry, whilst 2012 has the best EQ but 2023 has a better dynamic range than 2012. I’d want a mix between 2012 and 2023 personally… and as per usual, 2004 is the worst.

In 2004 Dave "rebooted" the Megadeth brand after his arm injury. So he remixed all the albums released on Capitol records to get more revenue, the old albums were out of print. Some people say that by doing that he cut royalties to the previous megadeth members, I don't know if that's true.

haha why are all the early 2000s remasters so bad. that 2004 one sounds like I'm listening to it on some guy's bluetooth. 2012 isn't great either. new one's the best besides the original. Probably has less DR or something than the original but sounds listenable and pretty close to the first.
