Meike got in touch recently asking whether i'd be interested to review this lens, and I didn't even realise it existed for the L Mount.
So, of course, I was very excited to get my hands on it and try it out.
For the price, I think it's an excellent 50mm with a lot of potential for video work, and it will get a place in my camera bag for sure.
If you're in the L Mount system, you'll know that lenses are very expensive and hard to come by in a lot of ways, so it's great seeing third parties like Meike making some affordable glass for Panasonic S-Series users.
Of course, the L-mount is growing day by day now, so it's definitely becoming a system to invest in, but of course it's still fantastic that there's more options now from other brands that aren't Panasonic, Sigma or Leica (if you could ever afford a Leica lens).

I hope they also got their 35mm coming..meike 35mm is seriously really impressive especially on s35 mode :) its nt oversharp but also not that soft, the perfect middle ground n a beautiful lens flare ;)

Nice summary of pros and cons. Would have been nice to see what the specular highlights are like, particularly when stopping down. Are the highlights hexagonal, octagonal, or round when stopped down? Does it make nice sunstars? I rather like the glow/haze at f1.2 because it gives you the option of a very dreamy, soft look wide open, and very sharp when stopped down. By the way, I got my S5 over a month ago, but haven't had a lot of opportunity to work with it since we've been in lockdown in Australia on and off. But when I have used it, especially with 10bit v-log, I can't believe the image quality from the graded footage. The 50mm f1.8 is a perfect pairing for size and weight, too. Thanks for all the work you put into your channel.

I agree in most points as I had this lens for some months. I switched to the Lumix 1.8 as soon as it was available. The Meike behaves too bad with flares and gosthing. Even the shipped hood did not help. And the focus ring was way too lose.

Ciao Mirco! If I had the choice, I’d get the Lumix personally since it’s more useable for Photo as well as video. If your budget can stretch that little bit further that is! Hope this helps!

Around 2:40 you mentioned something like focus throw. Can you explain what that means? I film a lot of content for social media and would rather not use auto focus when I'm by myself, so wondering if that's the answer for me

So the focus throw is how much you can turn the focus ring on the lens. If it's a longer focus throw, that simply means you can turn the ring further. Shorter focus throws are normally preferred for one-man bands and for when. you're shooting handheld since you don't have to turn the ring so much to get from close to infinity :)

Has anyone got any ideas how this would perform on a Leica CL? Would DOF at 1.2 be reduced or increased and what would the equivalent focal length be? - thanks

It would be like an effective 75 mm lens (roughly) regarding field of view with a depth of field like a 1.8 lens (aps-c crop factor 1.5). The light gathering capability remains defined by the open aperture of 1.2.

Great lens for the price. I will however forgo it - I don't want focus breathing at all. I will go for the 50mm f1.8 for the S5. Say, how is the manual focus on those panasonic lenses? How does it compare to the (obviously better) full manual lenses' focus feel?

The manual focus on the 50mm 1.8 is actually really decent. Smooth enough but of course it is focus by wire :)

How do you like this lens compared to the Panasonic 50mm? Would having a native 50mm for 200 dollars more worth it?

Sharpness wise, they’re quite similar from 1.8 upwards I’d say. For ease of use I’d say the 50mm 1.8 would be my preferred choice, it’s also a lot lighter as well. But really, if you’re planning on using a 50mm for video and you want something that’s cheap and does the job very well, then this lens is definitely a great shout :)

@@JoshCameron Thanks for the response Josh! Would have loved a comparison of the sharpness between the two at f/1.8, since your test does demonstrate that the Meike becomes crispy around f/1.6, so they're pretty close in price

For L mount cameras, is this lens really worth considering over panasonics own 50mm f1.8 lens? The Meike looks unusable until reaching f1.6 so thats virtually the same as the panasonic, and the panasonic offers full AF and metering along with a shorter minimum focus distance. If price is an issue, pick up a nikon 50mm f1.8d for £50 and a cheap dumb adapter and you've got a better quality piece of glass.

I do not think that you could use iFocus M motor from Moza on this focus ring. Meike are specialist to do it wrong way on all manual lenses.

I’d save and get a better lens. You pay for the 1.2 but it isn’t really useable til 1.6.

Meh...F1.2 is kinda of useless with that low contrast and with those CA, even if the lens is stopped down.

A modern lens with no AF? That's a hard pass. I'd rather use a vintage lens for like a 5th of the price.

a couple of things: Nice presentation and thats it. Content no so much. No real review. I wonder of the contrast becomes lower when shooting against the sun or backit situations. Have you been paid by Maike? Only one weak point - focus breathing? That is impossible. The focus barrel is copied from Voigtlander which is a shame. That is why I hate this lens when taking inspiration off other companies. This appied too all Chinese-made lenses. I also cannot stand people who support companies that are known to copy the design of others. Especially: TTartisan, 7artisan, ect. I would never contaminate my camera with those lenses.
