Though the last Mad Max movie opened back in 1985, Mel Gibson is still synonymous with the franchise. He played the leading role of Mad Max Rockatansky in the 1979 original, the sequel in 1981 and the third installment Beyond Thunderdome. With Fury Road coming out later this year, Tom Hardy of Bane fame is replacing Gibson in the role and the original actor won’t be popping up in any sort of capacity. But he could have, and he almost did.

@@rustynix993 Unfortunately it isn't LOTR, I tried doing Sean Connery as Gandalf about a year ago but it didn't work because of the beard, perhaps I'll give it another shot now the technology has improved.

I thought Tom Hardy did a damn good job in Fury Road, but this is really excellent. "Mel" has a thousand-yard stare in this clip that fits so well with the character.

@@SimplyNon_sense I thought he was fine. Kind of don’t like them casting a “Hollywood actor” to play a classically Australian character - one of the few we actually have. Kind of felt like a “which of the top 10 actors working today shall we cast?” It would have been a cool dynamic to see a much older Max played by Gibson.

Гибсон норм смотрится, но Том Харди сыграл просто шикарно. Сыграл именно персонажа постапокалиптического мира, который еще держится, но одиночество и безумие этого мира медленно подтачивают его психику.

Maybe he was too old to handle the action sequences too and being in the desert for that long but just imagining Mel’s Interpretation of old max in fury road. It could’ve been something crazy.

Deep fake rely on textures mainly, and these ones made by random people, on internet are done using archive material found on the internet or taken by existing movies, so the resolution is not always great (except for 4k movies, but actually it's difficult to find a proper head close up for each position). Studios have much more material (photos) at very high resolution, like also 4000px and more for a close up. practically at every angle of the heads. Also, these deep fakes on YT are done directly on the finished movie, so the possibilities are even more limited. in studio everything can be prepared in advance for the deep fake, for the shooting, and it would get the work easier and precise. I guess that would go to a 99% of realism.

Good actor develop their own distinct expressions, so even if it's a swap of face it's still noticeable. For instace Mel Gibson usually do small tilt of his head while talking.

Still think it’s a shame he wasn’t cast for this film but just an older Max. Would have worked. Get the Gringo, Blood Father, Dragged Across Concrete etc all showed he could still do the action. They were films before, during and after the time Fury Road came out

@@MildMisanthropeMaybeMassive Yes, but their implementation of it in the Mandalorian wasn’t nearly as flawless as this video (and frankly many other deep faker videos) using open source code. Either the people they hired don’t get it or they’re hiring the wrong people.

This is actually one of the best DeepFakes I've seen so far, and I've seen some good ones. The only problem is that Mel Gibson carries himself much differently, and of course, there's Tom Hardy's voice, but DeepFake hasn't addressed that yet. I liked Tom Hardy as Mad Max and I think it's cool they rebooted everything. If George Miller wanted to do a version with a young Mel Gibson, they would have to find a body double who can carry themself like Mel Gibson and then have Gibson ADR the dialogue. Or, what I would really like to see is an Old Man Mad Max. I think it would be pretty cool to see Mad Max still riding around the post-apocalyptic Australian outback, kicking ass.

That first minute might be the best deepfake I've ever seen. The overhead shot at the end is a bit of a miss, but I'm sure such angles are exceedingly difficult to pull off. All in all- fucking incredible work!

Really good job, can't even tell even if you are looking for inaccuracies, some bad light and shadow play. There might be some slight point by which you can tell, but those are small, the refining that was done to this is great. If you are not looking for those bits and pieces, from an average viewer perspective, then you wont even be able to tell. One place where it stood out, was the last scene here, some misalignment of the face, and too bright for it, if it requires to be darkened to match the surrounding environment, then it has to be done, despite original may or may not have that spotlight.

Visually, that was just about flawless. No weird lighting differences, even the mannerisms felt like they were actually Mel and not some uncanny valley shit.

Well that would make the mad max universe have a actual timeline. And the creator wants it to be just a collection of stories about a man maybe named Max who is crazy that ends up helping people and then disappearing back into the wasteland, he has only been the main character of the first film.

@@edwardfletcher7790 he was an alcoholic, messed up multiple things in his life at the time, including his marriage. People don't always think right in the head when they are alcoholics. I don't think he is anymore though. Either way his criticism seemed to be more aimed towards Hollywood's type. Had nothing to do with religious beliefs or racism (as I doubt he's a racist).

I remember after Pierce Brosnan was stepping down as bond there was talk that Ewan McGregor getting a license to kill... and then again not long ago when Daniel Craig wanted out... seems like 007 would be rife territory for your skills... what if Bond’s could be a gold mine?

There was also talk of Liam Neeson taking over as Bond after Pierce Brosnan, I had everything set up to give that a try about 6 months ago. I might dig those files out and give it a go. I don't think Ewan McGregor would fit/look right at all ontop of Brosnan's face.

Pierce Brosnan never stepped down, he was replaced. He has been on record stating that he wanted to do more Bond films but he found out that they were moving on from him to do Casino Royale. He was really hurt by the choice and to this day, has a hard time talking about it in interviews.

I keep forgetting this movie. It has spectacular moments, a good plot, great characters and photography, but maybe as I saw first the ones with Mel Gibson I feel in them a sense of raw and real world desolation; in Fury Road I felt a "what if" aesthetical desolation.

I loved the movie. But tbh that's what pissed me off the most. Stallone got to do his Rambo/Rocky movies at an older age...same with Arnold and Harrison Ford. Could they at least give Mel the same treat? Geeze...it would've made the movie 10 times more awesome.

I’ve never watched an entire Gibson Mad Max movie but Fury Road is a modern classic. I’ve watched it atleast 100 times now. The way the story is told, there was no reason for Tom Hardy, Gibson could have came back with no problem. This shows it perfectly.
