In the morning, from the terminus, I used to walk to Mill Park Secondary College, from where, I have nice memories. The Melbourne's tram, train, and bus Services was a big help for my going around this great city. Thank you very much.

I lived in Reservoir from 2005 to 2010 when I first retired, and used this route 86 into the city frequently. Trams in Melbourne are a great way to explore the metropolitan area when you're retired and have plenty of free time to become an amateur city photographer. I miss Melbourne a LOT.

Thank you, Schony for these delighful experiences. I always wantd to go to Melbourne, but at my age it seems unlikely. Your images are so clear;I especially love the street scenes and the lovely architecture of the outlying districts. Melbourne is a trolley fan’s dream, and you make it come true for this old fellow, who remembered when trolley cars were all over the US>

Yes, I even enjoy the traffic jams, but I bet you don't!! HAHA You might disagree with this Brendan, but Melb drivers, on the whole, do seem to be pretty good. They actually have alot more to contend with, ie the trams, than drivers in other states do! I can't help but think how much my Dad would have LOVED your films. He was orginally from Melb (his Dad used to be the station master back in the 1930's at Eltham), & he absolutely adored trains, trams etc. When we lived in Melb, we did many a trip up to Wallan, from Eltham to watch the Southern Auora (??) on it's journey north to Sydney. I recall it used to pass through sometime around 9.30pm. We would grab takeaway coffee & make a fun trip of it. I think I got my love of all things transport from him! Anyway, keep up the good work. I am going to nominate your for an Oscar, dead set!

Now that is one long line, I used to catch it in the city out to the start of the Smith St run, on coming back into the city sometimes the tram took for ever to arrive to pick me up, after seeing all it goes through after Collingwood, no wonder. Actually I met my wife on this route, in the city, at the now removed stop just before the Bourke St Mall. (Elizabeth St) On the odd occasion, heading out of the city down Gertrude St, the driver would miss judge how far it was until the Smith St turn and would come in a bit 'hot' over the rise to that corner and have to apply quite a bit of near excessive breaking to make the turn.... One day I had my back to the front, so no probs, however a petite Asian lady opposite me started uncontrolled rising out of her seat and coming towards me during one of those breaking sessions, I had to grab her by her shoulders and gently offer her back into her seat, lest she end up in my lap, or worse! I think she was a tad embarrassed, with no idea what to do, not that there was much she could have done!

Most depots have had the same routes for years. As a Southbank driver I'm usually driving routes 12, 30, 35 and 96. Any new routes such as the 58 require planning between PTV and Yarra. The 58 for example it made perfect sense to share between Malvern and Essendon as those two depots are closest to the end of each line.

Curious as to how or where the switches are controlled from. When one tram goes straight and the other goes right or left, who has thrown the switch?
@Schony747

It's all controlled by the driver who has a point selection switch on the drivers panel. transponder underneath the tram passes the command to a green box through a radio loop and the green box controls the rest.

Well if more will be back in use, that's great. The W trams are to Melbourne what Routemaster buses are to London. Just out of curiosity, do Melbournites call the new multi-car Bombardiers "trams"?
@Schony747
@Schony747 5 жыл бұрын
Yep everything is called a tram over here. The non educated tourists call them a bus. Regarding the W class, there will be a fleet of 12 Circles and three restaurants. So while the numbers won't be great, the heritage will still be running. No different to the Routemaster story in London.
@doncoleman4938
@doncoleman4938 5 жыл бұрын
The reason I ask is that here on the Gold Coast friends and I were discussing "tram" vs "light rail" (as it's called on the GC). Story goes a "tram" is a single unit (like Melbourne's W, Z and A class) whereas a "light rail" is a multi unit version. Whether that's true or not, I'm not certain. Maybe it's like Queenslanders calling a suitcase a "port"-local terminology. As you'd be aware both the GC G-Link and Melbourne networks are run by Keolis Downer. Hmmm, wonder if I can use my unused Myki credit on a G-Link ride?

Very very slow tram 1 hour 50 mins to travel 23 kilometers, 14kph is not a good speed for a modern transport system. A Sydney bus can travel from Avalon to the city in peak hour quicker than this.
@Schony747
@Schony747 5 жыл бұрын
There were a number of factors when I filmed this. Roadworks on Smith St Collingwood, extra cars due to the Hurstbridge Train Line shutdown which made traffic horrendous for us. But unless we get more tram priority things are only going to get worse.
@kcobley
@kcobley 5 жыл бұрын
It's pretty clear that trams need to be separated from traffic and have underpasses built at intersections. The single tram in Sydney is underperforming because of the limited number of services that can cross George St near Central Railway. The trams are larger than Melbourne Trams, the service is always packed. Measures need to be taken to go over George St. If an overhead viaduct about 400m long were built, it would also remove the danger of large numbers of pedestrians straying onto the tracks at Haymarket. Trams and Metro rail are the future of transport in cities, cars occupy to much valuable space to even be considered as a functional transport system. The Melbourne rail system is in crisis, it's at least 30 years behind Sydney with large numbers of level crossings, unfenced track that is easily used as pedestrian crossings, large sections of track with obsolete wooden sleepers and a 19th-century signalling system. Sydney's rail system is "futuristic" compared to Melbourne. Melbourne is clearly being run as a "car town".
