St Vincent's Plaza is an interesting tramway junction located on the north-east side of the Melbourne CBD. It is made up of three platforms and serves tram routes 11, 12, 30 & 109. This video explains the layout of the junction, and the how it is used operationally.

Really love these junction videos. Would love to see one of these on the Haymarket roundabout. The sort of N shape made by the lines combined with the fact it's in the middle of a roundabout always fascinated me when I visited Melbourne as a kid

I drive pass this junction fairly often and I was always impressed that it has three platforms. It makes good use of the space in the centre median of Vic Parade. I'm sure if the original planners of inner Melbourne's road network had their time again, they would make the entryways to the CBD wider across the board.

The reason why I like this stop is because you can change to go on many routes, as well as bus routes, and also that it's the only tram stop in all of Melbourne to have a different platform dedicated to a different route. I also can't wait for the anzac station at the domain interchange to be operational and become the first tram stop to also be a train station in one and it will be easy transport to go from a train to tram or tram to train in the same station. Melbourne's public transport has a bright future.

Great video! Interesting observation about the tramways not numbering their platforms. I believe major multi-platform stops in Sydney had numbers back in the day. I really feel like they should introduce it in Melbourne, but with letters to avoid confusion with tram routes or train platforms.

I notices @4:44 you can see the East Melbourne fire Station lookout tower. In the 1950's before the skyscraper craze took off, as kids when we drove past there and looked in awe at what was at the time one of the tallest structures in Melbourne. It's a museum now?

yeah, a fire brigade museum I believe - there's a modern headquarters building around the corner, I assume the fire brigade owns the old building still. I've never been in there but walked past it a lot for a few years.

I spent a good 10 hours watching tram after tram wait for traffic lights at this intersection from the hospital above while my wife was in labour. I turned to look at her a bit too, but really, I was astounded by how few trams this intersection could handle because of poor traffic light timing, to the point that the third platform could have been pulled out without any impact on capacity. Having said that... I probably can't talk: I'm a bit of a slow coach myself; my birth was very slow and so was my son's.

Taitset, just wanted to say I found your account a few weeks ago and have loved all your videos. My partner loved your pronounication guide one, especially as she's from Ballan! I was wondering if you had ever thought of doing a video about the 2003 runaway train that went from Broadmeadows to Spencer Street? Basically, a train was left without its park brake on and it rolled all the way down to Spencer Street at speeds so excessive that I'm surprised it didn't derail to be honest. It's been 20 years since it happened and I'd love to see someone, anyone, take a deep dive into this weird moment in Victorian railway history. It's a very interesting topic - it's got signalling hazards where trains miss each other by less than a second, it links in with your existing videos about North Melbourne and Spencer Street junctions, it covers grade and track speed, overhead power, and more!
@Taitset
@Taitset Жыл бұрын
Hey, glad you've been enjoying the videos! I have some friends in Ballan, great town. I hadn't thought about doing one on the Broady runaway - it's a very good idea. I was pretty young when it happened, but remember it being all over the news at the time. I also read the ATSB report at some point, but would definitely have to do so again! The really remarkable thing was that the leading Comeng car was actually repaired and returned to service (394M from memory). I will put it on my very long list of video ideas. :)

"it's got signalling hazards where trains miss each other by less than a second". Nonsense, where do you think that happens?
@Sandwich1414
@Sandwich1414 9 ай бұрын
@smedleyfarnsworth263 There's a report commissioned by the ATSB where they did a minute by minute report of the event. The runaway train was close to running up the back of the train ahead on the line, and the train ahead was quickly diverted to another parallel line before the runaway ran into it. It's in the report if you'd like me to link you to it?

@@Sandwich1414 How about you answer the actual question I asked. Which was about alleged signalling hazards.
@Sandwich1414
@Sandwich1414 9 ай бұрын
@smedleyfarnsworth263 Okay, sorry, I think I misinterpreted your question. I've probably misspoken when I said a "signalling hazard" and probably meant to say something more in relation to the train switching tracks and the train running very closely behind it. I didn't know what the proper term for this would be and used the term "signalling hazard" which probably isn't appropriate in the context.

Hi Martin, when you said if something goes wrong on Collins street, routes 11,12 and 109 will divert at St Vincent’s to continue west along Victoria parade. Well, route 11 trams actually can’t divert because it terminates at Victoria Harbour Docklands which is at the end of the tram line on Collins street. It would probably shuttle between the plaza and West Preston. When I am writing this comment the line down Gisborne street is closed for renewal works so route 11 is shuttling between St Vincent’s Plaza and West Preston as well as between Victoria Harbour Docklands and stop 7 101 Collins street. Route 12 is running as route 12a running via La Trobe street between St Vincent’s and Batman park. Route 109 trams running as route 109a running via Bourke street between the same two stops as route 12a. Route 30 trams didn’t run and route 35 ran as route 35a as far as Russel street via flinders street. At one point during the work an equipment fault occurred in St Vincent’s Plaza so route 11 terminated one stop early at Gertrude street, 12a went via La Trobe with no trams between Nicholson street and Hoddle street, 109a trams diverted via Wellington Parade but ran a normal service via Collins street through the CBD.
@Taitset
@Taitset Жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure I've seen route 11 divert along La Trobe, not sure where they were terminating though - I guess either Central Pier or down Spencer to Batman Park. But yes you're right- they can't actually get to the normal 11 terminus.
