From 1978- this is absolutely brilliant. Disappointed that a record of this wasn't released.

'Laura Ingalls' danced very well! Let us not forget she did very well on Dancing With The Stars, so Ms. Gilbert always had rhythm. I actually like the disco arrangement of this show tune classic. This may be a slice of 1970s cheese, but I love cheese!
@Ferney1c4 жыл бұрын
This posting always makes me laugh. it's so cheesy and fun. It's not something that is high art. She WAS doing those steps. She didn't stumble. She got them all right. Many people don't realize how much it takes to put on a show - even one that is cheesy. It's not easy to sing, dance, look like you are doing it easily and look like you are having fun. You go Melissa. You were really stretching and living.

For those saying, Melissa Gilbert couldn't dance, they should take some ballet lessons because one can see that she was able to make sweeping lifts and pirouettes. You need to know how to do splits to lift your leg high and fix your eyes on a selected point as you spin around to avoid getting dizzy. I saw Melissa's eyes fixed on something in front as she turned around just like what a ballerina would do.
@JourneyBold3 жыл бұрын
Yes, people who DO dance can see obviously that Melissa had solid training. She is spotting her turns, and her quality of movement & her lines are those of a dancer, even in a fast, jazzy piece & a disco outfit. She’s hitting every move in a lovely way, all while singing live (or lip sync’ing well to her own voice), and largely keeping her space in between two grown male dancers. Not to mention, spinning and turning with her hair down and long. All while smiling and giving her joy to the world. Brava, litltle Melissa. You should be proud of your past self. I can’t imagine when she had the time to take dance classes regularly, but she is somehow trained. Good on her! Some commenters don’t know what they don’t know. Glad some folks here can see that she had real chops, which don’t happen out of nowhere; they’re built from training.

As the only kid nowadays that loves little house, I was so pleased seeing this and it begs the question, Why did disco die?

I love that you’re curious ! Great question! Because there was always a musical competition between rock and disco. And rock continued on (morseo in the form of “pop”). Disco was fantastic, but it was more than just music, it was a style, and at the end of the day, musicians/bands/singers//song-writers couldn’t be limited to one genre of expression. Rock/Popular/Folk/Contemporary was more flexible and broader. Still, disco might return one day to some degree, as a mix of nostalgia and novelty.

A master class in choreography for a non-dancing star. Notice Melissa is dressed to match the background while the two real dancers are in bright white. All difficult moves are done by the pro dancers. And it all works to make Melissa appear to be a dancer. Hats off to Melissa's commitment to the segment and kudos to the Choreographer.
@JourneyBold3 жыл бұрын
Your comment is pretty clueless, overall. The choreography is indeed good for this segment, but Melissa is not a “non-dancer”. If you were a real dancer, you’d know that. You’d be able to see more closely what you’re viewing, versus spouting know-it-all nonsense. Also, your hypothesis about the costumes is weak and ridiculous.

No word of snark, I am genuinely fascinated by the distinctively 1970s/80s habit of taking something countercultural and flattening it for the mainstream. It’s still happening today, of course, but the way they did it back then is astounding to me.
@JourneyBold3 жыл бұрын
Strange comment. What specifically are you claiming is “counter-cultural” about this musical theater song? It’s not like they were singing and dancing to a Parliament/Funkadelic song or a Beatnik poem.
