I use a burlap bags. It Retains the moisture, creates partial shade and you can water through it.

I used cardboard for the first time this year and had great success. I would just lightly mist the cardboard daily and the soil underneath stayed moist.

That's a great idea! I wish I had known or thought of it before! I planted my cucumbers 2X, and they still won't come up on one side of my arbor. It's getting a little too late now.

My grandparents and parents did this. Sometimes the board warps and you have to flip it over daily, especially with parsnips which take 2-3 weeks to germinate.

I have used boards, brown paper grocery bags held down by rocks, even plastic bucket lids… whatever is around. My beet seeds sprouted really fast, I left for the weekend and came back and they were too far gone. Keep a close eye out!

I just mulch with straw...then I don't have to worry about moving a board...they grow up through the straw 😊

I find straw keeps seeds from germinating which is why I use it as a weed blocker 🤷

I mulch heavily as well and I always have good germination. I feel like this adds a step.

I’ve noticed the same here, mulch➡️ no germination or very low %

@@MelissaKNorris i did a light cover...not a mulch layer...but it was also my first time planting carrots so maybe germination was low and I didn't know it ;)
