Meltdowns Are Tough On Our Autistic Kid

Our autistic girl had a big meltdown today. It happened at gymnastics but I don't think that was the only cause. I feel there was a build up throughout the day that I may have missed. Gymnastics was just not something that was going to work today.
Meltdowns are some of the toughest things we have to watch Braylee go through. Something we always have to remember as parents and caregivers, it is much harder for her than it is for us. She is the one going through it. I have learned that I can be much more helpful for her if I approach my feelings and emotions the right way. #weefam #autism #autistic

David, you and Stacey are working so hard to understand and help Braylee and it is clear that your are far more concerned about her well-being than you own. Of course, every parent should be that way but you have a much more difficult situation because of her non-verbal autism. My heart aches for her because she can't tell you, in words, how she feels. And yet, you are to in tune with her that you know most of the time just what she needs. I'm sure you have helped many other parents with autistic children by putting out videos that show the full reality of your life with B.

Meltdowns happen, sometimes it's a combination of a lot of things, sometimes being able to cope with sensory input is less than others, today i know i'm already struggling, i feel the sensory input so much, sometimes you can't prevent the meltdowns, all you can do is let it happen, it doesn't make you a failure, all you can do is be there for her when it's over, i get judged when i have meltdowns and all it does is make it so much worse, knowing i'm upsetting others, over something i can't control.

I love how much you love your child. My son in law couldn't take it. My daughter and him have a level 3 autistic daughter. My sweet grand daughter. He left them because he couldn't understand Phoebe. He actually never tried. He left when she was 3...They live with me now. He comes to visit his son. But he doesnt have anything to do with phoebe. He spends the night about every 12 days. But he will get up around 4am and leave so he doesnt have to have morning interactions with her.. it's a sad situation. He helped bring this child into the world and just leaves both children because he cant stand his babygirl. 😪😪😪😪🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

I don’t know what it’s like for the support people but I know it isn’t easy which sadly makes the meltdowns worse as an Autistic adult. I can’t control melting down no matter what I do. I mean, there are some things that can do and try my best to do if I feel like I am having sensory overload. At home I can sit in my tent in the dark and listen to music and I have a bin there with all manner of sensory “toys” . But sometimes I just can’t keep it at bay and it feels like a monster takes me over and I am watching what 8m am doing and I don’t want to do it but I can’t stop. And no matter how well prepared we are, sometimes I am a 30 year old adult rocking and making distressed noises in the card aisle of the supermarket with my Service Dog Boe lays right in front of me keeping people back and also providing comfort. Verbal stimming in public as an adult is also super fun. At least if I have my headphones on and Boe with me, people will look and give me that pity glance but at least not bother me. Thank you for sharing your side. It helps me to know how hard it must be for my mom and my kiddo. We all have to ride the waves together so no one gets lost in the fray

Maybe when brushing her hair, try holding the hair first then brush through it, like, pick up a section, and hold it just above where you're going to brush, and the piece of hair should be slack above where you're holding it, not pulled tight... start from the bottom brush gently, so that she can't really feel it pulling on her head, and work your way up towards her scalp... I hope this makes sense?? Its how my mum used to do mine, cos I used to have crazy tangled hair and brushing it was such an awful time! I'm glad nowadays there's a lot more detangling and gentle brushes, as well as detangling sprays, conditioners etc! I hope this helps, but I know it can easily become just a difficult task, just thought I'd tell you what we used to do to mine to make it easier for all of us! Much love from England 🇬🇧!

😅👨‍🚒 17:22 OMFG David, that side eye like "ummmmmmm I kinda like my song, but I also know it sucks and I feel kinda silly holding a camera and this fan thing singing for 'strangers' on KZfaq.... But I also don't care because 🎶 it's hot outside..... Getting into my face" 🤣🎶🔥 Thank for that ending David!!!😅 P.s. I think we all feel for B and you guys when we hear she's having a tough minute, hour, day, etc. Your feelings ARE just as important and your proactive choice not to (or at least try your darndest not to) let go and move on for braylee and remembering that she has it worse as she's the one going thru it is beautiful. I know you absolutely know what you're doing and to manage life LOL, I just wanted to say that I appreciated hearing your thoughts and how you truly feel during or after a meltdown or an overall tough time. 🤍🖤🎧🎶

It might be a type of hairbrush thing... I know some bother me more than others. Might try a soft bristled brush instead? But then again, any brush might be sensory overload.

Your so correct! Y’all’s child & my child are alot alike. What I keep in mind when out and about is , for those not in the immediate circle is , If your not living it then your not diggin it. Theory and actual life can be two different things, in some cases. For those living it, no two shovels are the same and the layers will be evolving and possibly reoccurring.

Tips and tricks, start from the ends and hold the hair so it doesn't pull her scalp? I am only suggesting this because I have pretty long hair and I always wear it in a messy bun and my knots are constant and in the hurt-iest place on my head!! Brush choice REALLY helps too. I have a paddle brush that has straight rows and it says it's supposed to be magic at detangling. They are kind of correct! 😻😻🐾🐾 p.s. I'm not normally a "did you try this" or "you should try this" KZfaq commenter LOL because I don't doubt that you've tried it all. Just a long time wee gam fan coming from a place of love!😻😻😻

Hello! Quick tip, I noticed when you were looking for batteries in the drawer, there were button batteries, you may want to place those in a less accessible location. As a pediatric nursing student I have heard too many stories of children swallowing button batteries and how dangerous it is. I hope this comment doesn’t come off as rude, I am just trying to look at for you. You are both amazing parents and doing a great job! 💕

Two things that might help with brushing Braylee's hair: 1. Lift sections of her hair up and away from the scalp (like when you rub a balloon on your head and it makes your hair stick straight out) to brush them. That way, the brush doesn't have to touch her scalp. 2. Brush from the ends and slowly work bit by bit towards the scalp. Knots come out easier that way because they aren't being pulled into each other, which is what happens when you start at the scalp. I hope that helps! I hated brushing my hair when I was her age too, so I empathize 🫶

♥️ All kids have meltdowns. Including autistic ones but she’s obviously happy, healthy, and well taken care of. I’m new to the channel but so far I’m just seeing a dad trying to raise his kid. Maybe she’s autistic and maybe that makes it worse/harder to understand but the kid is happy. Like I said on a different video I wish I felt free enough to stim out loud. Nice song. 😂😂😂

I told David the exact same thing once. That honestly it's not transparent. He Replied to me that he didn't feel it was fair to show Braylee at her worst and that nobody wants to be seen when they're really really struggling, so he would not show her having meltdowns. I see his point clearly I don't think it's as helpful that way but I really understand where he's coming from. If you want to see a totally transparent very raw look at someone with extreme autism there's a channel it's called Kreed's world. Kreed died but I believe the channel is still up. His mother filmed everything. She kept nothing out of the videos. So if you're looking at what it's like to go through I'm talking major meltdowns and what she does about it that might be a resource for you. anyways I appreciate your comment and I just thought I would send this on to you.

Hi David. A while back, quite a while back I asked you why do you never show Braylee In difficult times such as having a meltdown because I thought you were wanting the channel to be transparent and real. And you informed me that you don't want to show Braylee at her low points and that you didn't think it was fair to show anybody struggling. And it made perfect sense and I understand it completely. It's very helpful when you explain like you did today about meltdowns and how they affect you and Stacey and what you try to do to prevent them and allow Braylee to come out of them the way that you have figured is best for her. Even though your putting out way more videos I don't think you're going to ever want to SHOW Braylee in a full-on meltdown. I understand why. I want to know about it so I can understand what a meltdown looks like, what is involved and how do you assist B when she's going through a meltdown. But I totally get why you don't want to show it. So just your explaining it and saying she had a bad day today she had a very severe meltdown even that alone brings more humanity and reality to the channel. I appreciate that aspect of it very much as it gives me understanding and more ways to see what autistic people go through. Thanks for the video l always appreciate a video from you and I hope B gets to feeling better soon. And that's about it see you in the next one. Bye for now.
